London 4K - Main Street - City Of London - Driving Downtown - England
Tuesday afternoon drive into the City Of London, a major meeting point for businesses worldwide. Throughout the 19th century, the City was the world's primary business center. Highlights include entering the city on the A10 roadway, the London Wall road, once the defensive wall first built by the Romans around Londinium, and ending near the intersection where the Bank of England is located.
The City of London is the primary central business district (CBD) of London. The City is now only a tiny part of the metropolis of London, though it remains a notable part of central London.
The City of London is widely referred to simply as the City (differentiated from the phrase the city of London by capitalizing City) and is also colloquially known as the Square Mile, as it is 1.12 sq mi (2.90 km2) in area. Both of these terms are also often used as metonyms for the United Kingdom's trading and financial services industries, which continue a notable history of being largely based in the City.
About three quarters of the jobs in the City of London are in the financial, professional, and associated business services sectors.
The City is a major business and financial centre. Throughout the 19th century, the City was the world's primary business centre, and it continues to be a major meeting point for businesses. London came top in the Worldwide Centres of Commerce Index, published in 2008. The insurance industry is focused around the eastern side of the City, around Lloyd's building. A secondary financial district exists outside the City, at Canary Wharf.

Foraging for food on the streets of Britain
(5 Oct 2015) LEAD IN:
In the UK, a man is literally making a meal out of finding food on the street.
Pavements, car parks and hedgerows may look full of weeds, but a lot of them are edible - and apparently quite tasty.
STORY-LINE:
Cars, concrete, noise - and weeds.
But to some, these plants represent a source of food.
David Winnard has carved out a career for himself as an urban forager.
He walks around Manchester studying - and harvesting - the edible plants that grow on the streets.
So, we're literally in the middle of Manchester, the city centre's just over there with all the big buildings and we've just come down this side street now to look at what most people would think of as a wasteland covered in weeds, I see it as botanical heaven and foraging potential. Especially with this plant which is mugwort. And mugwort is closely related to wormwood, which is the plant you make absinth with. Really common in these parts. This is a plant you can make a herbal tea with and the benefit of that is that if you have it just before bed there's chemicals in it that help stimulate the parts of the brain that help you remember your dreams. So, if you do dream at night you'll wake in the morning and think you've had really vivid dreams. You actually haven't had any more vivid dreams than what you'd usually have, you just remember them very clearly, he says.
Many of the plants that Winnard collects are disregarded by the untrained eye as weeds.
While local governments spend millions on controlling what they see as a problem, Winnard says many weeds could be harvested by locals, such as Japanese knotweed, which has thick red stems, can grow through concrete yet makes a great replacement for rhubarb.
And then there's all the fruit growing in public places from apples, blackberries, cherries and pears.
And a lot of wild plants are also medicinal.
This is coltsfoot. Coltsfoot is a wonderful plant. It's a spring flowering plant - unusually, botanically, with most plants that produce their leaves first and then flower later in the year, coltsfoot actually produces its flower first in February and March and into April and then the leaves come later in the year. But once you can see these obvious leaves you know to come back earlier in 2016 to come and find them, to come and find the flower. And if you chop up some of the flowers, which look like dandelions and put them in honey then, if you have a really, really chesty cough, take a spoonful of that and the coltsfoot will help to loosen the mucus off the chest. It's the active ingredient in most branded cough lozenges and things like that, Winnard explains.
Winnard says there are around 200 edible and medicinal species of plants growing in and around Manchester. Some examples include large bittercress, which has a strong horseradish flavour; stinging nettle, which can be made into a soup or pesto; and medowsweet, which is used to treat high blood pressure.
Aside from herbs and fruit, there are also many edible flowers that grow in the city, such as Japanese rose, which has purple petals that can be mixed with vodka and sugar to make a liquor tasting of Turkish delight; and ox eye daisy that looks like a large daisy and can be used as a health tonic.
Winnard runs workshops teaching people all of this.
But of all the edible plants, his personal passion is mushrooms.
Winnard's passion for the outdoors was inspired by his grandmother.
Now instead of sweets, just like his grandmother, Winnard prefers mushrooms. And since it is common to find a glut of mushrooms, he recommends drying them.
Despite this, Winnard claims never to have had food poisoning. The only thing he doesn't eat is meat.

Driverless 'pod' cars to take to British streets from 2017
From 2017 car passengers in Milton Keynes will be able to take a trip and read emails or a newspaper rather than watch the road in a 'pod' driverless car.
From 2017, one hundred fully autonomous 'pods' will travel on pathways next to pedestrians, using sensors to avoid obstacles, reaching a maximum speed of 12mph.
In an effort to get people used to the idea of seeing the 'pods' on their streets, drivers will get to try out prototypes, while remaining in full control of the vehicle in a trial due to start in 2015, as Jon Beasley, programme director from the Transport Systems Catapult, one of the collaborators on the project explains:
We will start them initially actually with driving, so people will be driving them to start with so that people can get used to actually seeing them on the particular pathways and they can get used to interacting with them and not being frightened by them and have confidence that they are actually safe to work with.
Google and carmakers such as Audi AG, BMW AG, Ford Motor Co. and Volvo have been working on autonomous car technology for years.
Several US states have already passed laws that would allow such vehicles on public highways.
Early collaborators on the Milton Keynes project include the engineering firm Arup and Cambridge and Oxford universities.
Earlier this year Oxford University scientists unveiled their latest prototype of a car that drives itself with the help of a tablet computer.
Acting like a plane on auto-pilot, it is designed to take over from humans in slow-moving heavy traffic or on a familiar route, such as a school run.
It is activated using an iPad on the dashboard - by tapping on a prompt, the driver can make the car's onboard computer take the wheel.
Robotcar, which is being developed by Oxford University and Nissan at Begbroke Science Park in Oxfordshire, uses a combination of external sensors and computer power to calculate the correct direction and speed.
By 2015, the first group of 20 'pods' will be trialled on dedicated lanes, separate from pedestrian, between Milton Keynes rail station and the city centre.
By mid 2017, one hundred fully autonomous 'pods' could be running on pathways alongside people and will use sensors to avoid obstacles.

Experience all of the sights and sounds as Watched Walker (yes, I’m talking about myself in the third person) takes us on a walking tour through the streets of London, featuring Kensington High Street, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The route begins outside the entrance to Holland Park, then moves east along Kensington High Street, ending outside the entrance to Kensington Gardens, close to Kensington Palace.
Sights seen along the tour include a great variety of shops, bars and restaurants (including Byron Kensington, YO! Sushi, Snow+Rock, Metro Bank, Studio B, COS, McDonald’s, ZARA, American Apparel, TK Maxx, Wagamama), London buses, and the Royal Garden Hotel.

Britain's Biggest Heists The Baker Street Robbery
The Baker Street robbery was the burglary of the safe deposit boxes at the Baker Street, London branch of Lloyds Bank, on the night of 11 September 1971.
The robbers had rented the leather goods shop Le Sac, two doors north of the bank, and tunnelled a distance of approximately 50 feet (15 m) passing under the intervening Chicken Inn restaurant. To avoid being overheard, they only dug during weekends. They initially used a thermal lance to try to break into the vault but ultimately had to use explosives.
Robert Rowlands was a ham radio operator who lived in a fifth floor flat on Wimpole Street.[4] He overheard conversations between the robbers and their rooftop lookout at 11:15 pm.[4] He contacted local police, who did not take him seriously but suggested that he tape record the conversations while the robbery was in progress. There was however insufficient information to identify which bank was being robbed.
At 1 am, Rowlands contacted Scotland Yard, who immediately sent officers to his flat in Wimpole Street.
At 2 am, a senior police officer alerted radio detector vans to track down the gang's exact location. Police checked the 750 banks within 10 miles of Rowlands' receiver, including the Baker Street bank. At the time, the thieves were still in the vaults but the police failed to realise this because the security door was still locked. The thieves got away with £1.5m cash[5] (2010: £16.5m)[6] and valuables from over 260 safe deposit boxes. The total haul was believed to be near £3m (2010: £33.1m).
The robbers left a cheeky message on a wall: 'Let's see how Sherlock Holmes solves this one'.
It has often been reported that after four days of news coverage British authorities issued a D-Notice, requesting that such reporting be discontinued for reasons of national security and the story disappeared from newspapers.[7][8] It is claimed by national newspapers in recent years, that some of the security boxes contained embarrassing or nationally sensitive material[3][9] namely compromising sexual photographs of Queen Elizabeth II's sister, the late Princess Margaret, and that the purpose of the request was thus to protect the British Royal Family.[3][10]
Rowlands, the aforementioned ham radio operator, claims that the police attempted to prevent him from talking to the press by means of the D-Notice, which he felt was an attempt to hide police incompetence.[11] He also claims that police threatened to prosecute him for listening to an unlicensed radio station.[11] An investigation some years later showed that a request had never been made to the D-Notice committee at that time.[12] Furthermore, a D-Notice has no legal status, being a mere request and not a legally enforceable order. The Times newspaper was still reporting about the case over two months later.[13]
Other recent reports suggest that the identity of the criminals and their sentences have never been revealed.[3] However, The Times (amongst other newspapers) reported in January 1973 that four men had been convicted of the robbery at a trial at the Old Bailey. Three of these men were named as: Anthony Gavin, 38, a photographer from Brownlow Road in Dalston; Thomas Gray Stephens, 35, a car dealer from Maygood Street in Islington; and Reginald Samuel Tucker, 37, a company director from Lee Street in Hackney, who all pleaded guilty and who each received twelve years imprisonment. The fourth man, Benjamin Wolfe, 66, a leather goods dealer from Dovercourt Road in East Dulwich, pleaded not guilty but was subsequently convicted and received eight years. Wolfe had signed the lease on the shop used by the robbers using his own name.[5][14]
Two other men accused of handling banknotes from the robbery were acquitted. According to one press report, the police believed that the mastermind of the crime was another London car dealer who was never apprehended.Thomas Stephens and Reg Tucker had sentences reduced to eight years on appeal.
A semi-fictional version of the robbery is the subject of the film The Bank Job (2008), which explores a popular theory of the crime that argues the robbery was either set up by, or later covered up by, MI5 to secure sexually compromising photographs of Princess Margaret, which were being kept in a deposit box at the bank by known radical Michael X. While this theory has usually been considered an urban myth, there have been some individuals, including George McIndoe, an advisor to the film, who claimed to have knowledge of the actual robbery,[16] purporting that this was indeed the real motivation for the robbery.
