Libya (12/2010) - Tripoli, Medina
Tripoli (Arabic: طرابلس Ṭarābulus)- also طرابلس الغرب Ṭarābulus al-Gharb Libyan vernacular: Ṭrābləs pronunciation; derived from Τρίπολη; the Greek word for three cities in Greek: Τρίπολις Tripolis) is the largest city and capital of Libya.
The Tripoli metropolitan area (district area) has a population of 1,065,405 (2006 census). The city is located in the northwest of the country on the edge of the desert, on a point of rocky land projecting into the Mediterranean Sea and forming a bay. Tripoli was founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians, who named it Oea.
Tripoli is the largest city, the principal sea port, and the largest commercial and manufacturing center in Libya. It is also the site of Al-Fateh University. Due to the city's long history, there are many sites of archaeological significance in Tripoli. The climate is typical Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers, cool winters and some modest rainfall.
The city's old town is still unspoiled by mass-tourism, though it is increasingly being exposed to more and more visitors from abroad, following the lifting of the UN embargo in 2003. However, the walled Medina retains much of its serene old-world ambiance. The Assaraya al-Hamra (the Red Castle), a vast palace complex with numerous courtyards, dominates the city skyline and is located on the outskirts of the Medina. There are some classical statues and fountains from the Ottoman period scattered around the castle.
The Gurgi and Karamanli mosques, with their intricate decorations and tilework, are examples of the artistic skills of local craftsmen. Just outside the Gurgi mosque is the Arch of Marcus Aurelius, the only surviving Roman monument in the city. More and more palaces (especially from the Karamanli period) are also being restored and opened to the public. The basic street plan of the medina was laid down in the Roman period when the walls were constructed as protection against attacks from the interior of Tripolitania, and are considered well planned, possibly better than modern street plans. In the 8th century a wall on the sea-facing side of the city was added.
Three gates provided access to the old town: Bab Zanata in the west, Bab Hawara in the southeast and Bab Al-Bahr in the north wall. The city walls are still standing and can be climbed for good views of the city. The Bazaar is also known for its traditional ware; fine jewelery and clothes can be found in the local markets.

Libyans reject Tripoli sea deal with Turkey
(24 Dec 2019) LEAD IN:
Libyans in the eastern city of Benghazi are fearful of a recent deal on sea rights between Turkey and the Tripoli-based government.
Benghazi residents are worried the deal would allow foreign intervention in the North African country.
STORY-LINE:
From shoppers at a street market to intellectuals at a cultural centre, many Libyans living in the eastern city of Benghazi are unhappy with the recent sea rights deal between Turkey and the Tripoli-based government.
The maritime deal would give Turkey access to an economic zone across the Mediterranean.
But residents of Benghazi, including Mansour Mohamed, are worried that the deal could usher in foreign interference in their country.
We want to be free on our land, Mohamed says.
Several shoppers in a busy Benghazi market are echoing the same sentiment.
May God forbid any Turkish or foreigner from coming here, as these are our homes, says Abdullah Abdelhadi.
Beyond the crowded market, intellectuals in the city are also critical of the deal, saying it may jeopardise the country's sovereignty.
I think that the agreement has a negative impact on Libya in the economic sense, in terms of security and in terms of Libyan sovereignty as the agreement allows Turkey to use the maritime domain and airspace in Libya, allowing the possibility of Turkish forces entering Libya, says Rehab Shenneib.
Turkish President Recep Tayyeb Erdogan has said the maritime agreement gives his country the right to send troops to Libya to fend off forces opposing the Libyan-government based in Tripoli, which doesn't control the whole country.
Since 2015, Libya has been divided between two competing governments, in the east based in Benghazi and in the west in Tripoli.
The sea deals have sparked outrage in the Libyan parliament, which is based in the east and is aligned with the self-styled Libyan National Army, led by Gen. Khalifa Hifter.
Lawmakers there denounced the agreements as a flagrant breach of Libya's security and sovereignty.
The lawmakers in the east are saying the agreements grant the Turkish government the right to use Libyan airspace and waters as well as build military bases on Libyan soil.
And even beyond the Libyan borders, the deal has been a source of concern for several countries in the Mediterranean region.
Objections have come from Greece, Cyprus and Egypt, which lie between Turkey and Libya geographically.
Egypt has told the U.N. Security Council it rejects the two agreements between Turkey and Libya's U.N.-supported government.

Saida's Old Souk: Shopping and Old Traditions
With a winding old marketplace and a seaside castle, Saida is easily one of Lebanon’s most charming destinations. Though the coastal city sits just 40 km south of Beirut, it has retained a much quainter and more traditionally Middle Eastern vibe than the cosmopolitan capital, making it a perfect trip from Beirut.
If you could scroll back through the annals of Saida’s history, you would see a city abuzz with activity for the last 6,000 years. Over the centuries, Saida has witnessed the conquest of Philistine, Persian, Greek, Roman and Crusader armies. Its foundations have been burned to the ground, its riches pillaged and its walls rebuilt over and over again. Throughout its long history, Saida has earned a name for itself as a producer of purple dye, soap, glass and ships. The city is even mentioned in the Old Testament. Today, Saida is replete with relics of its long and fraught past that make it a fascination destination.
