#ClimbingMountFuji (Part-2)
Mount Fuji located on Honshu is the highest volcano in Japan at 3,776.24 m (12,389 ft), 2nd-highest peak of an island (volcanic) in Asia, and 7th-highest peak of an island in the world. It is a dormant stratovolcano that last erupted in 1707–1708. Mount Fuji lies about 100 kilometers (60 mi) south-west of Tokyo, and can be seen from there on a clear day. Mount Fuji's exceptionally symmetrical cone, which is snow-capped for about 5 months a year, is commonly used as a symbol of Japan and it is frequently depicted in art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers.
Best time for climbing Mount Fuji. Although the mountain peak is open to hikers from July 1 to early September, the best time to climb is from the end of July to late August. This is due to the relatively stable weather conditions.
Fuji is typically between 3 and 4 hours. Although descending Mt. Fuji is twice as fast as climbing up, it is also considered by many to be twice as difficult. The trail leading down is made up of loose rock and pebbles and is a hazard for slipping and falling flat on your back or face forward.
There are 4 main trails leading up to the summit of Mt. Fuji, the #Yoshida, #Fujinomiya, #Subashiri and #Gotenba trail.
Each trail consists of a 5th station, at which point cars may no longer advance. The largest, most well known 5th station on Mt. Fuji is the Subaru line 5th station (AKA #Kawaguchiko 5th station).

Climbing Mt Fuji for Sunrise - Yoshida trail 후지산 일출
Watching a Sunrise at the Top of Mt fuji was unforgettable experience.
Only 5.6 km ( 3.5 miles ) to the top but 1500m ( 5000 ft ) elevation gain make me breathless as soon as I start hiking.
Getting a stamp at each station was also a unique experience.
Slow and steady was a good way to fight the altitude sickness.
'A wise man climbs mount Fuji once,
Only a fool climes it twice'
-Japanese Proverbs

Fuji-san Climb in Off Season: Subashiri Trail
I have to say my Fuji-san climb was indeed a rewarding and spiritual pilgrimage because of the fact there were many obstacles while making plan to climb Fuji-san in off season such as weather, logistics etc. Lucky enough, it finally happened and I was blessed with perfectly clear blue sky and sunny weather despite Sept/Oct are typhoon season. I have gotten so much solitude time with the mountain (compared to being in the middle of climbing festival queuing up those narrow paths with thousands of other climbers during peak season). Most of the time it was just me and the mountain staring at each other, though I still get to greet other climbers once in a while. Fuji-san is a scared mountain to the locals and especially significant in Shinto and Buddhist. Each Shinto torii gate I passed through meaning I was one step closer to my goal.
There are, of course, some downside of off-season climbing such as no facilities available nor standby rescue personnel, and less transportation and huts in operation, not to mention the colder air and unpredictable weather.
People were in surprise when they found out about me climbing alone. An ojisan even said only strong young man can reach the summit. Well, I did it anyway!
Here's a short video of my Fuji-san climb (please don't mind the quality). I also posted up as much information as I know if you're curious. Enjoy!
*The climb was done on 15th to 16th October 2016 in a prefect and clear weather.
*Caught the earliest bus from Gotemba Station to reach Subashiri 5th Station.
*Took 3 hours plus 1 hour detour into the forest to see a 600-year-old tree. First part of the trail was nice below the treeline and leads through forest.
*Climbed up to 7th station and stayed in Taiyo-kan for a night where I caught the enormous shadow of Fujisan casting over the Lake Yamanaka during sunset, and watch the sunrise from Taiyo-kan as Subashiri Trail faces East.
*Continued the climb next morning which took another 3 hours to reach the top.
*Another 1 hour to walk around the volcanic craters to get to the highest point of Fujisan - Ken-ga-mine Peak at 3776m, and peek into the bottom of it.
*Descended via a different route with ascent route, from the top to 7th station it was a relatively flat and sandy surface, so you can basically just run/small jog downhill in a zig-zag shape and it took only abut 90 minutes.
*From 7th Station, it was the infamous Sunabashiri or literally Sand Run, a 2.8 km straight gritty downhill track all the way back to 5th station. With the sand as cushion, you can run downhill in about 2 hours.
*The last part of the descent route was some forest cover that connect back to the start of Subashiri Trail. As I was in rush to catch the last bus back to town, I pretty much ran all the way down in 1 hour.
p/s: Taiyo-kan 太陽館 is one of the very few mountain huts that still open till mid October. They can be reached via 090-3158-6624 during season or 0550-75-4347 during off-season. As for 2016, their last day of operation was on 16th October, on my way down I saw them taking out all futon/mattress for a good sun bath, and ready to end the unofficial climbing season.

We went to Mt. Fuji in Japan on Oct 4th, 2013. This is just after the off season, but the weather was great and it was safe to climb. There was barely anyone on the mountain with us. I think we saw 2 other people.
We started at the 5th station at 8:00 am and climbed to the top of Mt. Fuji. We took the Yoshida Trail. After the 8 station, the air gets thin and it is a lot harder to climb. It is an odd and awesome feeling.
Around the 6th station we found a snowboard. I thought it was a good idea to carry it to the top of Mt. Fuji and try to snowboard down. I failed miserably :)
We took a bus from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal in Tokyo to Mt. Fuji 5th station. You can make bus reservations here:
We also stayed at a hostel near Mt. Fuji called K’s House:

Mount Fuji
Mount Fuji (富士山, Fujisan, IPA: [ɸɯꜜdʑisaɴ] ( )), located on Honshu Island, is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776.24 m (12,389 ft). An active stratovolcano that last erupted in 1707--08, Mount Fuji lies about 100 kilometres (60 mi) south-west of Tokyo, and can be seen from there on a clear day. Mount Fuji's exceptionally symmetrical cone, which is snow-capped several months a year, is a well-known symbol of Japan and it is frequently depicted in art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers. It is one of Japan's Three Holy Mountains (三霊山, Sanreizan) along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku; it is a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, a Historic Site, and was added to the World Heritage List as a Cultural Site on June 22, 2013.
The mountain has been selected as a cultural rather than a natural heritage site. As per UNESCO, Mount Fuji has inspired artists and poets and been the object of pilgrimage for centuries. The 25 locations include the mountain itself, Fujisan Hongū Sengen Taisha and six other Sengen shrines, two lodging houses, Lake Yamanaka, Lake Kawaguchi, the eight Oshino Hakkai hot springs, two lava tree molds, the remains of the Fuji-kō cult in the Hitoana cave, Shiraito Falls, and Miho no Matsubara pine tree grove.
