Nigeria: Sukur Kingdom fights to preserve UNESCO status
A kingdom in northern Nigeria is trying to recover three years after a devastating attack by Boko Haram.
The people of Sukur Kingdom fear they may lose their UNESCO World Heritage status after fighters destroyed 500-year-old buildings and artefacts.

The 13 Months of Sukur: Africa’s first World Heritage Cultural Landscape (2010; 50 mins)
This ethnographic film shows the complete seasonal round of the Sukur people of Nigeria's Mandara Mountains. It does so from the perspective of cultural landscape, showing how their technology, society and ideology as expressed in ceremonies interact with their mountain environment to produce a landscape that is inherited, maintained and always in process of becoming. A wide range of traditional technologies - amongst them iron smelting, architecture and basketry - are introduced, as are core anthropological concepts such as clan and caste. Nic David and Judy Sterner have carried out ethnographic, historical and archaeological research in the Mandara Mountains since 1984. Their intimate and unrivalled knowledge of the Sukur people is evident throughout a film, made over 17 years, that is intended for general audiences besides students of anthropology and African studies.
This video was made between 1992 and 2008 using a Sony Hi8 camcorder which produces good, though less than modern, visual quality.
2018 Watch Day - Sukur Cultural Landscape
Watch Day celebrations at Sukur, Nigeria, took place in February 2018, as part of the Yawal Festival, an annual Harvest Celebration, organized by the Chief and community leaders of Sukur. Hundreds of participants came together in celebration of the site’s inclusion on the 2018 Watch. The two-day event featured a guided tour, demonstration of maintenance activities on the civi mungan (northern paved way), an art contest, traditional dances and performances, workshops for basket weaving and dry season farming techniques, and a film screening.

Each with their own unique and exceptional art styles to be discovered. Maybe 50 tribes are known to the world. Yoruba, Ife, Igbo these tribes are known and loved for their arts all over the world. But what about Bura, Kahugu or Margi... unknown tribes with beautiful typical art. There is still so much to be discovered. Even for us. We visited around 100 tribes and found the most exquisite totally unknown art. Ivory, terracotta's, bronzes, masks, wooden statues it's all there to be discovered. We are proud to be able to expose some of these fantastic art objects in our Gallery. For example of the Sukur Kingdom. A kingdom in Nigeria we visited last year. Nigeria to rebuild World Heritage Site destroyed by Boko Haram
The National Commission for Museum and Monuments, NCMM, says it is exploring ways to rebuild the Sukur world heritage site in Adamawa destroyed by Boko Haram insurgents in 2014.
