The Hippodrome of Constantinople (Greek: Ἱππόδρομος τῆς Κωνσταντινουπόλεως, romanized: Hippódromos tēs Kōnstantinoupóleōs) was a circus that was the sporting and social centre of Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire. Today it is a square named Sultanahmet Meydanı (Sultan Ahmet Square) in the Turkish city of Istanbul, with a few fragments of the original structure surviving.
The word hippodrome comes from the Greek hippos (ἵππος), horse, and dromos (δρόμος), path or way. For this reason, it is sometimes also called Atmeydanı (Horse Square) in Turkish. Horse racing and chariot racing were popular pastimes in the ancient world and hippodromes were common features of Greek cities in the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine era.

Tour of Istanbul, SultanAhmet & Fatih
To book Halal hotels in Istanbul Turkey, click on the link below;
Taxis - BE VERY CAREFUL. They will rip you off by taking the long way around, going round and round and even changing the figures on the meter! Best thing to do is agree a price beforehand or keep an eye on the meter. turkeytravelplanner.com has lots of useful info.
Tram/public transport is best to use by buying an ISTANBULKART (its like an Oyster card) where you tap in. But the difference is you can use one card between lots of people. Once you tap in, you give the card to the next person and they can tap in too. So don’t buy more than 1 card! You can use the card on ferries as well as the tram but not on all buses.
You can pretty much walk everywhere too in Istanbul. Most of the sight seeing tours are all located in Sultanahmet or within walking distance.
Things to do and see in Istanbul;
1. Aya Sofia
2. Blue/Sultanahmet Mosque
3. Suleymanie Mosque
4. Gulhane Park
5. Galata Tower
6. Basilica Cistern
7. Topkapi Palace
8. Rustem Pasha Mosque
9. Eyup Sultan Mosque (otherwise know as Salahuddin the famous conqueror of Jerusalem). If you go there on Jumuah day you will not find space anywhere - it’s very popular. You normally have to pray outside. (Recommend praying jumuah at Suleymanie)
10. Miniaturk
11. Museums - Istanbul archeological; Turkish & Islamic Arts Museum etc. Lots of museums to visit. You can buy the Museum Pass which allows you access to lots of buildings including Aya Sofia and Topkapi Palace as well as all the museums - 5 day pass is only 85Liras. Cheapest way to visit everywhere if you visit more than 3 buildings. Can buy the pass at any Museum.
12. New Mosque (but 500 years old). Near this mosque there’s usually a gallery that’s got different artists and displays.
13. Galata Bridge/Bosphorus (fish sandwiches very delicious here)
14. Istiklal Street. Can find all designer and non designer stuff here. Also something to have here is ‘wet hamburgers’ - steamed buns with burger inside. Very nice. And cheap.
15. Maiden’s Tower - very nice to sit on the coastline and watch the sun set. Also good tea here
16. Eminonu Square. Cheapest stuff here. Underneath the subway. You normally won’t get anything cheaper than here so if you want to buy stuff buy it from here! It’s slightly cheaper to go to the Asian side of Istanbul but harder to locate things.
17. Bazaars - Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar. Grand Bazaar is expensive compared to spice Bazaar. Spice Bazaar has everything they Grand Bazaar has but just more spices. Everything is cheaper in the spice Bazaar than the grand one. Can visit both just to see but buy stuff from Spice Bazaar.
18. There are lots of hidden shops around the Bazaar which have really good stuff and cheaper than the bazaars so just browse.
19. Take the ferry/cruise
20. Princes Islands (day trip)
There’s so much more to see and do. Can’t even mention most of that stuff. Food wise- in Sultanahmet it’s not the best and it’s the most priciest as it’s the tourist hotspot.
One restaurant I would recommend is Ciya Sofrasi but this is on the Asian side of Istanbul. You will have to take the ferry across but it is worth it.
For desserts - Hafiz Mustafa (though it’s expensive) is probably the better dessert places.

Sultanahmet District in Istanbul, Turkey
The Old City of Istanbul is the oldest part of Istanbul, and the location of most of its historical sights.
Many visitors to İstanbul never make it out of Sultanahmet. And while this is a shame, it's hardly surprising. After all, not many cities have such a concentration of historic sights, shopping precincts, hotels and eateries within easy walking distance. Ideally suited to exploration by foot, the neighbourhood is a showcase of the city's glorious past, crammed as it is with mosques, palaces, churches and houses dating from Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
Many of Istanbul’s historical gems, mostly consisting of Byzantine and Ottoman-built monuments are in Old City. Most are located a short walk away from, if not immediately on the edges of, Sultanahmet Square. Some other sights are dispersed throughout the peninsula.
Around Sultanahmet Square
• Hagia Sophia. Dating from the sixth century, it was originally a basilica constructed for the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I. A masterwork of Roman engineering, the huge 30 m diameter dome covers what was for over 1000 years the largest enclosed space in the world. The church was looted by the fourth Crusaders in 1204, and became a mosque in the 15th century when The Ottomans conquered the city. It was converted into a museum in 1935. Don't miss the excellent mosaics, including those in the gallery, reached by a stone ramp to the left of the entrance.
• Topkapı Palace. The imperial enclave of the Ottoman emperors for four centuries. Lavishly decorated, with four courts of increasing grandeur. In the second court of the entrance to the Harem and the State Treasury, housing a weaponry display. The third court has the Imperial Treasury. Both Islamic and Christian relics, rugs, porcelain. The views from the Fourth Court over the Bosphorus are spectacular. You can also see Prophet Mohammed's belongings.
• Hagia Irene. Hagia Irene, which you will notice to your left after entering the outer yard of Topkapı Palace, is one of few Byzantine-era cathedrals which was never converted to a mosque (though not used for religious purposes either during the Ottoman period).
• Sultanahmet Mosque. With its six minarets and sweeping architecture the Sultanahmet or 'Blue' Mosque impresses from the outside. Unlike Haghia Sophia, this is still a working mosque, entry is through the courtyard on the SW side which is back side of mosque. No shorts or bare shoulders and you will need to remove your footwear. Entrance is free, but donations are welcome upon exit. The mosque is closed during ritual prayer but mosque volunteers provide you with a free presentation about the Mosque and also about Islam during that period. The venue for this event is the Mosque's conference hall. It is the building with Free Event sign that will be on your left while you are approaching the Mosque from Hagia Sophia.
• Basilica Cistern. A giant underground cistern built by Justinian in 532 to provide water to the city in cases of siege. A wooden walkway winds between the pillars, and lights and piped music add to the eerie atmosphere. Bring some type of fish food as you'll see enormous fish swimming below your feet, and throw a coin into the pool to make a wish. The statues of Medussa are impressive.
• Theodosius Cistern. Though smaller than Basilica cistern, Theodosius Cistern is your option of choice if you want to avoid the crowds, but still soak in the atmosphere of an underground cistern. The lighting of the columns is much better than in Basilica Cistern.
• Hippodrome, adjacent to the Basilica Cistern, Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. This was the centre of Roman and Byzantine Constantinople, and is a great place to begin one's tour and to watch people. The building no longer stands, but the obelisks and sculptures that have been collected here since Theodosius' time in the fourth century remain. The four bronze horses in the facade of St. Marco in Venice used to be on top of the Emperor's box in the Hippodrome and they were looted by the crusaders in 1204. While you are on your way to the hippodrome, don’t forget the German Fountain, a neo-Byzantine style fountain building at the square leading to Hippodrome. It was a gift sent by German Kaiser Wilhelm II to the Ottoman Sultan.
• Archeology Museums. The first museum of Turkey, consist of there museums in same courtyard and different buildings; Archaeological Museum, the Ancient Orient Museum and Tiled Kiosk Museum. The museums houses of over 1 million archeological objects. One of the best pieces are Sumerian tablets such as oldest poem, Alexander the Great Sarcophagus, Treaty of Kadesh, wall of Babylon, Gezer Calendar (10th century BC) and much more!

Istanbul's Old City: Sultanahmet and Surrounds
Istanbul's Old City surrounding Sultanahmet is rich in ancient architecture which includes the famous Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. Once known as Constantinople - the capital of the Byzantine, Istanbul was centered historically around Sultanahmet. Istanbul's historical architectures are deeply influenced by the Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires, which all, at some point in history, controlled Constantinople, thus the architectural designs are diverse and are deeply seeded in history.
The attractions in the Old City are located at a walking distance from each other and can be conveniently accessed in a day trip though you should be speedy in arriving early to avoid the crowds.
This short video introduces Divan Yolu, Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern, the Hippodrome, Kucuk Ayasofya Mosque, Gülhane Park, Arasta Bazaar as well as Star Holiday Hotel which I stayed at. I hope you enjoy this experience through history.
Thank you for watching.

Visiting the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey (Sultan Ahmed Mosque - Sultan Ahmet Camii) Travel Video
Visiting the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey (Sultan Ahmed Mosque - Sultan Ahmet Camii) Travel Video. Call to prayer. This morning we are visiting the Blue Mosque also known as Sultan Ahmed Mosque and it is absolutely packed. We arrived here at around 10 am and the lines were wrapping all around the courtyard. It took about 15 minutes to get in but it's absolutely worth it. It's absolutely enormous here. There are six towering minarets, two hundred and sixty windows and twenty thousand tiles just in the main area.

As a man when visiting the mosque this is the type of outfit that you're allowed to wear. T-shirt is fine. You're going to want to have long pants and you're going to want to be wearing socks.
And if you forgot some of these things they do have other items that you can cover up with inside.
And as a girl you'll want to cover your head, your shoulders and your legs. And don't forget the socks. Yes, and bring socks because you will have to take your shoes off before you go in.
So our conclusion from visiting. It's a very impressive mosque. It's one of the largest in the world. I loved going inside. It's amazing to see but crowds are something to contend with definitely.
