Summit Skyride at Stone Mountain
This is the aerial tramway ride to the top of Stone Mountain in Stone Mountain Park near the town of Stone Mountain which is about thirty miles east of nearby Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Two Floridians, Herbert Fishler and D.C. Land decided to commission a Swiss company called Von Roll to built a tramway to the summit and it opened in November of 1962 at a cost of about a million (US) dollars. The then Swiss Ambassador August Lindt, dedicated the ride during the formal dedication ceremony on opening day. Sometime in the early 1990's, before the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, the ride was refurbished and rerouted with the ground station called a drive station moved a little bit west and closer to the Stone Mountain Museum. A drive station is the station containing the drive motor that pushes and pulls the gondolas to the top an back. The station at the top is called a tension station which contains a set of counterweights that go down a shaft that keep a constant and steady tension on the cables. You can see the original 1960's space age station at the seven minute mark in the video just to the right of the current drive station.
Riding Summit Skyride - High Speed Cable Car Ride - Stone Mountain Park, Georgia
There are so many activities to choose from at the Stone Mountain Park in Georgia. After a relaxing day at the campground, we choose to ride the high speed cable car to the top of the mountain and do some exploring. The ride took us right past the massive relief carving on the side of the mountain to the top of Stone Mountain. There we saw where lightning strikes, found some unique plants and animals and had some fun climbing trees. Come along with us for the ride!

STONE MOUNTAIN SKYRIDE OVER THE CARVING TO SUMMIT | Georgia RV Trip
The SkyRide that goes over the carving is 2 high speed Swiss-built cable cars (funicular car) to the top of the summit, passing over the carving on the north side of the mountain. The cars run every 5 minutes or so. The summit can also be reached by a walk-up trail on the west side of the mountain by Confederate Hall. Once at the top enjoy the great views, especially the Atlanta skyline.
The new aerial tramway opened in July 1996, when the Centennial Summer Olympic Games events are held at the park.
Stone Mountain Park was the venue for tennis, cycling and archery.
The carving on is the largest bas-relief in the world; It depicts three Confederate figures during the Civil War; President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson and their favorite horses, Blackjack, Traveller, and Little Sorrel.
The entire blasted area measures 3 acres, about the size of two and a quarter football fields.
The carving of the three men is 400 feet above the ground, Robert E Lee is as tall as a 9 story building, the whole carving is 30 feet taller than Mount Rushmore.
It measures 90 by 190 feet, and is 42 feet into the mountain. The deepest point of the carving is at Lee's elbow.
The Venable Brothers, owners of the mountain, deeded the north face of the mountain to the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) in 1916 and originally had 12 years to complete the memorial. After 2 World Wars and 4 different men that were commissioned to complete the carving, it was finally considered complete 56 years later, on March 3, 1972.
