ABOUT SUNDARBANS NATIONAL PARK:
Sundarbans National Park is a national park in South 24 Parganas district of the state of West Bengal, India. The largest mangrove forests of the saltwater environment along the Great Sundarbans are intact forests that are the largest in the world. The seafront border of the basin is located at the mouth of the Ganges and the Brahmaputra and extends across West Bengal in Bangladesh and India. There are about 10000 sq km of Sundarbans, spread over an area of 6017 square kilometers in Bangladesh.
The work of conservation of the present Indian part of the Sundarbans began in the 1878. The main area was declared as the Sundarbans Tiger Project in the 1973. It was declared as a national park on May 7th 1984. In the 1987 (ix) and (x) category, it is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a natural property. There are currently three more wildlife sanctuaries set up in Sajanekhali, Lothian Island and Holiday Island. Besides, there are birds at Bharatpur Crocodile Project and Sajnekhali near Patharpatima. In the 1989, this Indian part of the Sundarbans was declared a Biosphere Reserve. Although Bangladesh and Indian parts of the Greater Sundarbans are part of the same continuous land, UNESCO's World Heritage Index is named after the Sundarbans and Sundarbans National Parks, respectively. Marine streams surround the entire Sundarbans as nets, Mud Char and mangrove forests are small islands with salt water. In addition to the famous Royal Bengal Tiger in the forest, the forest is known as home to numerous species of birds, including Chitra deer, saltwater crocodile, Keto turtles, freshwater crocodiles and snakes. The largest mangroves in the world, the Sunderban Biosphere has been conserved and protected by a very hard working and diligent work force. This documentary for the West Bengal forest department is a tribute to the brave guards work in one of the most dangerous and difficult terrains in the world.
The Sundarbans is a mangrove area in the delta formed by the confluence of Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna Rivers in the Bay of Bengal. It spans from the Hooghly River in India's state of West Bengal to the Baleswar River in Bangladesh.
The Sundarbans mangrove forest, one of the largest such forests in the world (140,000 ha), lies on the delta of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers on the Bay of Bengal. It is adjacent to the border of India and Bangladesh, Sundarbans World Heritage site inscribed in 1987. The site is intersected by a complex network of tidal waterways, mudflats and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests, and presents an excellent example of ongoing ecological processes. The area is known for its wide range of fauna, including 260 bird species, the Bengal tiger and other threatened species such as the estuarine crocodile and the Indian python.
Naming the Sundarbans: Sundarbans literally means beautiful jungle or beautiful forest. Sundarbans is named after the beautiful trees, which are grown here. Other possible explanations might be that it was named after the sea, forest or moon-bound (ancient aborigines). It is generally assumed that Sundarbans are named after the beautiful tree tree.

Sundarbans The Sundarbans is a vast forest in the coastal region of the Bay of Bengal, considered one of the natural wonders of the world, it was recognised in 1997 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the delta region of Padma, Meghna and Brahmaputra river basins, this unique forest area extends across South 24 Parganas and, North 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal State, India and Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat districts of Bangladesh. The Sundarbans is the worlds largest coastal mangrove forest, with an area of approximately 10,000 sq km; of which approximately 6,000 sq km is situated in Bangladesh and approximately 4,000 sq km in India. The Bangladeshi and Indian parts of the Sundarbans, while in fact adjacent parts of the uninterrupted landmark, have been listed separately in the UNESCO World Heritage List: as Sundarbans and Sundarban National Park respectively. The Sundarbans are a network of marine streams, mud shores and mangrove forests. The region is known to contain numerous species of animals, birds and reptiles, including Royal Bengal Tiger, Chital Deer, Crocodile and Snakes . On 21 May 1992, the Sundarbans was recognized as a Ramsar Site of ecological importance. The name Sundarban can be literally translated as beautiful forest in the Bengali language (Shundôr, beautiful and bôn, forest). The name may have been derived from the Sundari trees (the mangrove species Heritiera fomes) that are found in Sundarbans in large numbers. Alternatively, it has been proposed that the name is a corruption of Samudraban, Shomudrobôn (Sea Forest), or Chandra-bandhe (name of a primitive tribe). However, the generally accepted view is the one associated with Sundari or Sundri trees. The history of the area can be traced back to 200–300 AD. A ruin of a city built by Chand Sadagar has been found in the Baghmara Forest Block. During the Mughal period, the Mughal Kings leased the forests of the Sundarbans to nearby residents. Many criminals took refuge in the Sundarbans from the advancing armies of Emperor Akbar. Many have been known to be attacked by tigers.[3] Many of the buildings which were built by them later fell to hands of Portuguese pirates, salt smugglers and dacoits in the 17th century. Evidence of the fact can be traced from the ruins at Netidhopani and other places scattered all over Sundarbans.[4] The legal status of the forests underwent a series of changes, including the distinction of being the first mangrove forest in the world to be brought under scientific management. The area was mapped first in Persian, by the Surveyor General as early as 1764 following soon after proprietary rights were obtained from the Mughal Emperor Alamgir II by the British East India Company in 1757. Systematic management of this forest tract started in the 1860s after the establishment of a Forest Department in the Province of Bengal, in British India. The management was entirely designed to extract whatever treasures were available, but labour and lower management mostly were staffed by locals, as the British had no expertise or adaptation experience in mangrove forests.[5] The first Forest Management Division to have jurisdiction over the Sundarbans was established in 1869. In 1875 a large portion of the mangrove forests was declared as reserved forests under the Forest Act, 1865 (Act VIII of 1865). The remaining portions of the forests were declared a reserve forest the following year and the forest, which was so far administered by the civil administration district, was placed under the control of the Forest Department. A Forest Division, which is the basic forest management and administration unit, was created in 1879 with the headquarters in Khulna, Bangladesh. The first management plan was written for the period 1893–98.[6][7] In 1911, it was described as a tract of waste country which had never been surveyed nor had the census been extended to it. It then stretched for about 266 kilometres (165 mi) from the mouth of the Hugli to the mouth of the Meghna river and was bordered inland by the three settled districts of the 24 Parganas, Khulna and Bakerganj. The total area (including water) was estimated at 16,900 square kilometres (6,526 sq mi). It was a water-logged jungle, in which tigers and other wild beasts abounded. Attempts at reclamation had not been very successful. The Sundarbans was everywhere intersected by river channels and creeks, some of which afforded water communication throughout the Bengal region both for steamers and for native ships.

Tiger at Sundarbans National Park India
This tiger video at Sundarbans was taken by my cousin Soma Jha quite a few years back. I uploaded a similar video some years back. The tiger finds it difficult to navigate through mud, quite an interesting video. I can still feel the excitement of sighting this tiger at Sundarbans.
Royal Bengal Tiger and Sundarban Fisherman Live Battle Video from Matla River
In this video you will find a group of fisherman is fighting with Royal Bengal Tiger without any reason.
The tiger was crossing the river Matla and that time a boat for catching fish full of fisherman was also traveling in the river. They saw the tiger and came near to him and then they were trying to beat him with a bamboo stick.
The tiger was angry but he was helpless because he was on the river and swimming. Some sort of trouble was there for the tiger in river.
Suddenly the boat was run over the tiger. Due to the fast moving propeller the tiger is no more.
This incident happened in Sundarban Matla River on March 2018.
The culprits identified and they have arrested by Raidighi Police Station. Non bailable sections given by the police.
