Avoid Camelback crowds - Hike Sunrise Peak Trail
Sunrise Peak Trail, Scottsdale AZ. Beautiful 2 mile hike to the top (4 miles out and back). Watch my other videos to see a review of hiking Camelback from either end, but if you're looking to avoid crowds and try a beautiful hike, this one is for you. We had a nice steady pace and got up and back down in 2 hours.
DETAILS: Drive east on Shea, and turn at some point to get onto Via Linda. Then take Via Linda as far as it goes and you'll come to the parking lot (and the overflow). Approximately 14500 East Via Linda. There is a drinking fountain at the bottom but no bathrooms.

Hiking Pinnacle Peak Saddle at Sunrise
Difficulty Level: Moderate
Highest Point: 5920 ft
Dog Friendly: No (in Mount Rainier National Park)
Recreation Pass: America the Beautiful Pass or pay for a day pass at the ranger station
THE BEST DAY EVER! This hike was truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. We started early (at 5 AM) so we could see sunrise on Rainier. Right as we got up to the base of Plummer Peak, the clouds cleared and we could see the red/orange reflection of sunrise on Rainier. We looked south and we could see Mount Adams, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Hood! The trail down to the lake very steep and has lots of loose rock. This section of the hike requires more skills and could potentially be very dangerous so be careful at this spot.

***The Phoenix Area’s Parks and Preserves (2007) by Donna and George Hartz - Provides several intriguing late nineteenth and early twentieth century photographs from Phoenix’s parks and preserves, including the Phoenix Mountains and Squaw Peak. I recommend checking this out if you are interested in the history of Phoenix's mountains or seeing more early photographs of Squaw Peak.
***Squaw Peak: A Hiker’s Guide (1997) by Jack San Felice - A history of the peak and detailed information on the various trails, including the Summit Trail.
***60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Phoenix (2009) by Charles Liu - I highly recommend checking out this book if you’re an avid hiker or intend to hike other trails in the Phoenix area. It includes detailed overviews on several wonderful hikes, including Piestewa Peak’s Summit Trail and Freedom Trail on pages 48-56.
***A Natural History of the Sonoran Desert (2015) edited by Steven J. Philips & Patricia Wentworth Comus - Produced by the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, this book is the authoritative text on the Sonoran Desert. It is absolutely the best read on the environment, plants, and animals of this unique ecosystem and will greatly inform any travel or hike through the areas of central and southern Arizona, southeast California, Baja California, or Sonora. Originally published in 1999, the updated second edition came out in 2015. The original edition is available for a cheaper price here.

Hiking Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale Arizona. This is a great hike in Arizona. It is tough and in some places you have to actually do a little climbing. The views at the top of Camelback are worth it! Don't let the crowds deter you - part of the fun was the camaraderie and encouragement from other hikers! This video is a little different in style for me. It was just a quick little hike and most of it was in the dark, which makes my conventional style of filming basically impossible.

McDowell Mountain | Epic climb, crowded descent on Lost Dog Wash, Old Jeep, and Sunrise | 12/29/2019
13 miles and ~1700 feet of climbing on the South side of the McDowell Mountain range. Not the snooze-fest I was expecting when I signed up, but well worth it for the views.
Started off at the Lost Dog Wash trail head, up Lost Dog Wash trail to the lookout, back down by way of Old Jeep Trail and Ringtail, and then one hell of a climb up Sunrise Trail. Yet again, the descent was a little above my pay grade, and made worse by having to stop every hundred feet for hikers. Still a great ride with great people, despite the 39 degree starting temperature.
