GUATEMALA TRAVEL VLOG! EXPLORING ANTIGUA!
**Sorry about the faulty microphone in this one.
The last stop on our Guatemala trip was to the beautiful town of Antigua! Unfortunately we were so exhausted from the hike up Volcan Acatenango, we didn't get to explore Antigua near as much as we would have liked. However we made the best of our time, and still got to see a lot of the city in the couple days we were there. It's definitely a place we will need to get back to someday!

Guatemala is a bit of a favourite amongst backpackers with nothing but good times to be had, as Macca and Brianna found out for themselves.
In this episode our delightful duo dance their way through the small streets of Antigua, climb to the top of a mighty volcano, splash around at Semuc Champey, and walk among the ancient ruins at Tikal.
All of this made Guatemala the team's favourite country they've travelled to so far.
Next up, we're going to two of the least visited countries in Central America - Honduras and El Salvador.

THE BEST SUNRISE IN GUATEMALA! (INDIAN NOSE MAYAN FACE, LAKE ATITLAN)
Guatemala has exceeded our expectations in so many ways, and our first stop in Guatemala, Lake Atitlan, was no exception! One of the most beautiful lakes we've ever seen surrounded by stunning mountains, it was a quiet and quaint stop on our trip, exactly what we were looking for to start off our travels in Guatemala.
The highlight of this stop was by far our hike up to Indian Nose where we got to watch one of the best sunrises over looking Lake Atitlan with the Volcanoes in the background!

Guatemala For First-Timers - Guatemala Travel Guide | Time Media
Exploring Guatemala - Guatemala Travel Guide
Guatemala is the Mayan heart of Central America. There are dozens of historical sites to explore in this country, but there are other charms here as well, such as the colonial city of Antigua, the lively market of Chichicastenango, the incredible ancient ruins of Tikal, and many awesome volcanoes and lakes. All that plus dense jungles, colonial cities, and relatively inexpensive food makes Guatemala one of the best places in the region. This travel guide can help plan your trip there and avoid the hordes of tourist who are slowly discovering this inexpensive and wonderful country.
Top 5 Things to See and Do in Guatemala
1. Take In Lake Atitlan
This lake is framed by three volcanoes and offers arguably the best spot to watch the sunset in Guatemala. On the northern coast of the lake lies the tourist village of Panajachel, a good base to arrange lake and volcanoes tours as well as to enjoy the many restaurants, bars, and nightlife in a beautiful lakeside
2. Head To Antigua
This picturesque colonial city sits in a highland valley between three volcanoes and is full of characteristic colonial Spanish architecture, from its cobbled streets, churches, and houses, to its ruins, and parks. Head to the Plaza Mayor (central square) to take in its amazing gardens, palaces, and cathedral.
3. Stroll Tikal National Park
Guatemala’s most famous cultural attraction. I loved these ruins — they made me feel like Indiana Jones. Come early and stay late as the park empties out in the afternoon when the tour groups leave, and you can have the place all to yourself. I also recommend sleeping over in the park to catch the sunrise. Admission is 150 GTQ.
4. Visit Semuc Champey
Semuc Champey consists of a 1,000-foot long limestone bridge over the Cahabòn River. Take a candlelit tour through the Kamba caves, go tubing down the Cahabòn, or swim in the turquoise pools along the bridge. FYI, the caves are privately owned and can only be visited with a guide. Most tour operators have day trips to both sites for 150-225 GTQ.
5. Chichicastenango Market
Most people who come to Guatemala visit Chichicastenango — the largest native market in North America. Every Thursday and Sunday is market day in “Chichi” when thousands of Quiche Mayans come to town to buy and sell handicrafts, flowers, poetry, trinkets, and textiles.

Acatenengo Volcano from 00:08 to 01:45
If you go to Antigua, trekking 2 days / 1 night to go to the top of the Acatenengo Volcano is a must.
I hiked with a guide and a group of about ten people. If you are lucky, you will see some volcanic lava eruptions. After several hours of walking, you will have a magnificent view of the volcano, where you will sleep in your tent. From base camp, the next morning, a short hike of 35 minutes is made to see a beautiful sunrise.
Antigua and Guatemala City from 01:45 to 04:17
Lake Atitlan from 04:17 to 06:12
To visit Lake Atitlan, it's possible to host in different cities around the lake. For me the choice was made in San Pedro de la Laguna.
Very quiet city where it is possible to make different hikes.
The main one is to see the sunrise at the Indian nose.
The trek was done without a guide. It is possible to take a shuttle very early in the morning at 4am (one every hour - 3h, 4h, 5h) from the center of the city (about 1h) to drop you at the start of the hike. After there will be about 30 minutes of ascent. Return afterwards by walk from the Indian nose to San Pedro de La Laguna across the fields.
Rio Dulce from 06:12 to 08:07
You can easily spend two days visiting the Rio Dulce. Personally, I chose to sleep in Finca Tatin, very nice lodge and not in Livingston too touristy for me. You can rent a cayak and travel by the Rio Dulce to Livingston. Different hikes through the jungle are also possible from this lodge.
Semuc Champey from 08:07 to 09:56
Semuc Champey was a big surprise in Guatemala. Do the hike to the top of the lookout for a beautiful view of the river
Tikal from 09:56 to 11:25
Tikal is an essential stop in Guatemala to visit its famous Mayan temples. From Flores, an unattractive city, you can go to Tikal by Shuttle. I advise you to go very early to cross few people and to observe peacefully different monkeys and birds.

Family Exploring a Volcano: Tour with Old Town Outfitters in Antigua, Guatemala
We went on a 1/2 day guided tour with Old Town Outfitters
[ ] to explore the Volcan Pacaya, a local volcano that last erupted in a major way in 2014 and 2010. It is still spewing lava but slowly. I'd never been on a guatemala volcano hike or to any guatemala volcano so we were pretty excited. Our guides, Alex and Mono were excellent, especially with the kids. The trail is not nearly as steep or rugged as I made it seem. Just that talking and hiking makes it harder to get enough wind sometimes. The boys had no problem as it is only about 4km to the high point. After that we descended into the lava field to roast marshmallows over vents and then enjoy a home made vegetarian meal that was fantastic. We learned a lot from Mono, a local, about plants and animals and the geologic and thermal features in the area. On our way down we followed a path down the other side so we didn't have to back track.
If we go back, I'd really like to take the overnight trip to Acatenango Volcano to see the glowing lava at night. They have a lot of other antigua guatemala volcano tours and trips and they were very accommodating and provided a lot of information about the history and culture of the area.

Backpacking Guatemala | SOLO FEMALE TRAVELER | Ep. 34 | Flores & Tikal
Our backpacking adventure continued from Belize (San Ignacio) to Guatemala. We crossed the border to Guatemala from Belize and got a shuttle to the island of Flores. Flores is a cute little island where most backpackers stop while visiting the world famous Maya pyramids of Tikal - the top thing to do & top attraction to see in Guatemala, for sure. We stayed in the legendary Los Amigos hostel - a backpacker hub where most traveler hatch before doing one of the Tikal tours. The hostel is one of the most nicely decorated hostels I've ever stayed at, so it is a must see ! We did the Early Bird tour to Tikal as we heard that the Sunrise + Sunset tours were BS - as you won't be able to see neither of them anyways.

Guatemala ranks as one of my favorite places in the world. The culture is rich and accessible and the landscape is just gorgeous. This is one of the best spots in Central America with incredibly warm people who are open and happy for the tourism coming to their country.
