Gwalior Fort | Gibraltar of India | Ep: 4 | Madhya Pradesh Travel Series
Gwalior, A royal city at the Heart of India in the State of Madhya Pradesh is known for its contribution in the Indian History, Culture and Music. As per legends this city was founded by Suraj Sen during 3CE. According to Mughal Emperor, Gwalior is the ‘Gibraltar of India’
In our MP Travel Series vlog no.4, we take you to one of the most famous and proudest Forts in India, The #GwaliorFort.
In this video, we show you various monuments spread across the Gwalior Fort premises. While reaching the fort, we have 2 types of tickets to be purchased.
Places to be covered in Gwalior Fort Premises:
a) Man Singh Palace / Man Mandir Palace:
The #ManMandirPalace was built by the King of Tomar Dynasty - Maharaja Man Singh in 15th century for his favorite queen, Mrignayani. Man Mandir Palace is often referred as a Painted Palace because the painted effect of the Man Mandir Palace is due to the use of styled tiles of turquoise, green and yellow used extensively in a geometric pattern.
b) Karan Mahal:
The #KaranMahal is another significant monument at Gwalior Fort. The Karn mahal was built by the second king of the Tomar dynasty, Kirti Singh. He was also known as Karn Singh, hence the name of the palace.
c) Jehangir Palace – Shahjehan Palace:
Both palaces are separated by a well/pond and is spread across the sides of same compound
d) Sahastra Bahu Temple / Saas Bahu Temple:
The #SaasBahu temple was built in 1092-93 by the Kachchhapaghata dynasty. There are 2 temples in the complex with one dedicated to Lord Vishnu and other to Lord Shiva.
e) Teli Ka Mandir:
The #TeliKaMandir is a Hindu temple built by the Gurjara Pratihara emperor Mihira Bhoja. It is the oldest part of the fort and has a blend of North and South Indian architectural styles. The temple was originally dedicated to Vishnu, destroyed during a Muslim invasion, restored into a Shiva temple by installing a linga while keeping the Vaishnava motifs such as the Garuda.
f) Gurdwara Data Bandi Chhor:
This was built during 1970s and 1980s at the place where 6th Sikh Guru Hargobind Sahib was arrested and held captive by Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1609 at the age of 14 years on the pretext that the fine imposed on his father, 5th Sikh Guru Arjan had not been paid by the Sikhs and Guru Hargobind.
g) Gopachal rock cut Jain monuments:
They are a group of Jain carvings dated to between 7th and 15th century. They are located around the walls of the Gwalior Fort. Mughal Emperor Babar conquered Gwalior in AD 1527. Babar ordered the destruction of the Jain statues, as he mentions in his memoirs. The heads of most of the statues at Urvahi gate were damaged
h) Chaturbhuj Temple:
This is the temple where oldest existing Zero in Gwalior region is inscribed. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and was excavated by the Gurjara Pratihara rulers in the 9th century AD.
There are 2 separate tickets in Gwalior Fort, with both tickets as ₹25 for camera charges.
Ticket no.1: ₹25…. It covers entry to Man Singh Palace, Saas Bahu Temple & Teli Ka Mandir
Ticket no.1: ₹20…. It covers entry to Karan Mahal, Vikram Mahal, Jauhar kund, Jehangir - Shahjehan Palace etc.
For us, it took ~4-5 hours to complete the journey across Fort premises. It is advisable to enter the Fort via Elephant gate and cover Chaturbhuj temple, Man Singh Palace, Karan Mahal, Vikram Mahal etc in the order. Once after finishing these regions, we can start walking towards the Urvahi gate and visit Saas Bahu temple, Teli Ka Mandir, Datta Bandi Chhor Gurudwara, Gopachal rock cut Jain monuments etc.
Also, prepared to have a great walking day as you can see vehicles are not allowed to enter the Man Singh palace and it’s premises.

Gwalior Fort in Madhya Pradesh, central India
Gwalior Fort, situated on top of a hill, finds its place among the best fortresses of India. It is also considered to be one of the most impenetrable forts in the country. Known for its great architecture and rich past.
According to historians, there isn’t any concrete proof to indicate exactly when the fort was constructed. However, a local legend tells us that it was built in 3 CE by a local king called Suraj Sen. A saint named Gwalipa came wandering to the fort and met the king, who was suffering from leprosy. When Gwalipa offered him some water from a sacred pond (now called Suraj Kund and located within the fort complex), he immediately became healthy again. As a thankful gesture to the saint, the king named the fort and the town after him. Following this, 83 successors of Suraj Sen controlled the fort. But the 84th king, Tej Karan, did not bear the title and lost the fort.
The Gwalior Fort then witnessed a brief period of rule by the Mughals, until the Marathas captured it and soon lost it to the East India Company. After this, there were many recurrent shifts between the rule of the Marathas and the Britishers. Finally, in 1844, the Maratha Scindia family of Gwalior, as the British government’s protectorate, occupied the fort.
Teli Ka Mandir and Sahastrabahu (Sas-Bahu) Ka Mandir are the two architecturally rich Hindu temples here. Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhor is another holy place built inside the fort’s complex, and it was where Sikh Guru Hargobind Sahib was kept as a captive by Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Man Mandir Palace, Gujari Mahal, Assi Khamba Ki Baoli, and Suraj Kund are other important monuments found in the complex.

Gwalior Fort - superb view of fortified hilltop in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, with yellow duckies
A fabulous frontal view of the Man Singh Palace in Gwalior, with its typical blue tiled facade with yellow ducks adorning it! So unusual for a terrifying looking fortress-palace! Someone among the Scindias or their achitects must have had a great sense of humour...
