From The Heart of Belize - Swing Bridge
The Swing Bridge is a unique wonder in all of the world! It is the oldest Swing Bridge in Central America and the ONLY remaining manually swung bridge in the entire world!
The bridge was constructed in England and delivered to Belize by the Jefferson Construction Company. After the bridge was installed, vehicular and pedestrian traffic would come to a standstill in downtown Belize City EVERY day, once in the morning and again in the evening, to allow boats to pass.

대한민국의 약 1/10 면적에 인구 38만인 자그마한 나라 벨리즈. 17세기 열대 우림 벌목을 위해서 이곳에 건너온 영국이 만든 남미대륙 유일의 영연방 국가였다. 도시 곳곳엔 지금도 무역과 수산업으로 풍요의 한 시절을 보낸 흔적이 남아있다. “중앙아메리카에서 가장 오래된 다리예요. ‘올드스윙브릿지’라고 부르는 선개교인데요. 저 아래 엑셀이 있죠. 저게 반으로 갈라지면서 다리가 열리는데 사람들이 손으로 땀나게 돌려야 열립니다” 하루 두 번, 다리를 90도 돌려 큰 배들을 통과시키던 광경은 이미 멈춘 지 오래. 1981년 벨리즈는 오랜 영국령 식민 상태를 끝내고 독립을 얻었다.

Belize is a small country with about 1 / 10th of the population and 380,000 in population. It was the only British Commonwealth of the South American continent that came here for logging in the 17th century for rainforest logging. An accident in downtown Belize City this morning caused a stir for commuters in the heavily trafficked area. But for two women, it was a scary ordeal when their SUV plunged into the Haulover Creek near the Swing Bridge around eight o’clock. A Good Samaritan, however, was joined by a fisherman and both bravely jumped into the river to assist the women. The women were traveling pass Ocean Ferry when the brakes to the SUV gave way and after slamming into two vehicles, the SUV plunged into the river. Here is News Five’s Isani Cayetano.

The historic Swing Bridge in the heart of the city is undergoing repairs to ensure the safety of thousands of pedestrians who traverse the bridge every day. But the state of the bridge has deteriorated so much that the scope of work has also grown significantly. Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner says that now more time is needed to complete the extensive repairs. Here is News Five’s Isani Cayetano with a report.

Quick video of some boats at downtown swing bridge. Belize swing bride is one of the only hand cranked bridge in the world. Bridge is only opened when boats need to dock more within the city due to storms.

Repairs on the historical Swing Bridge continue in the downtown area of the City. The Belize City Council’s initial assessment of the state of the Swing Bridge revealed serious structural issues which means that further work is required. Areas that requite urgent attention include severely rotted guard rails, deteriorated base plates and gaps on the pedestrian walkway. Mayor Bernard Wagner says the Council took the immediate decision to close a side of the pathway and undertake these repairs to avoid any risk to residents.
