Honorary graduation ceremony held for student victims of Sewol-ho ferry disaster
3년 늦었지만 … 세월호 희생 단원고 학생 250명 명예졸업
An honorary graduation ceremony was held for the 250 student victims from Danwon High School, who died during the tragic Sewol-ho ferry disaster in 2014.
The event was held at 10 a.m. at the school in Ansan city, southwest of Seoul, with some 500 people attending, including Seoul mayor Park Won-soon, education minister Yoo Eun-hye, and friends and family members of the victims.
The school's principal said that it will continue to commemorate the victims every year and remember their sacrifice forever.
Today's graduation ceremony is being held three years after when the victims were originally expected to graduate, as the bereaved families refused to attend the ceremony until the bodies of two missing students were recovered.

Tears, grief as S.Korea ferry survivors make emotional return to class
Emotions ran high on Wednesday as students who survived the sinking of the South Korean ferry 'Sewol' returned to their high school in Ansan 10 weeks after the disaster.
Making their way up the road to Danwon High School, around 70 students were greeted by parents of classmates who were among the more than 300 dead or missing.
Hugging each other through tears, they were encouraged by group of teachers holding signs that read
One of the survivors, Shin Young-jin, addressed the students, parents and teachers before school began for the day and said all they could do for their lost loved ones was to honour their memories.

SOUTH KOREA: PARENTS' FRUSTRATION AND FEAR
Parents of students missing since the South Korean ferry sank wait in anguish for news of their children. To License This Clip, Click Here:
Ansan Hwarang Memorial Hall opens to public
The entire nation has been grieving for the victims of the Sewol-ho ferry disaster for days now... and on this Tuesday a much larger memorial altar opens at a park in Ansan... the city so awfully touched by this tragedy.
Rain continues to fall across the country but that hasn't stopped tens of thousands of people paying tribute to those who died.
We connect live to our Ji Myung-kil who is standing-by at the Ansan Hwarang Memorial Hall. Myung-gil....
Good morning... this new memorial hall opened earlier this morning and people have been streaming in to say their last goodbyes.
Three hours ago President Park Geun-hye visited the memorial hall and paid tribute to the Sewol-ho ferry victims... she also spoke to the relatives of victims.
As you mentioned,... the altar has been relocated to this park in Ansan as the number of mourners has grown and grown in recent days.
The Ansan Hwarang Memorial Hall is six times larger than the previous altar which was at Ansan Olympic Memorial Hall.
The altar displays portraits of the victims... including 152 students and four teachers from Ansan's Danwon High School.
Over the past six days... some 180-thousand people have visited the altars set up in this city.
It seems as though the city has been overwhelmed by the sheer number of people wanting to say their last goodbyes. How will the new altar be run and can anyone go down to pay their respects?
Yes, they can. The new memorial hall will be open for 24 hours and everyone is free to pay tribute to the people who so tragically lost their lives.
The new altar is run by the government and will be jointly sponsored by Ansan City and Gyeonggi-do Province.
To handle the volume of people coming here,... more than 30 shuttle buses will be laid on to help people get to-and-from nearby subway stations.
There's also a huge parking lot with room for nearly 3-thousand cars right next to the altar.
People who can't make it here can instead send text messages or personal letters commemorating the victims.
The messages are posted up on a bulletin board so they can be read by mourners paying their respects here.
This was Ji Myung-kil reporting from Ansan Hwarang Memorial Altar.
Candle light vigil held with hope
A candlelight vigil took place for the second straight night in the city of Ansan on Saturday,... where the 325 students who were on the ferry went to school.
Sohn Jung-in reports.
The laughter and lively spirit that once filled this area has been replaced with silence and sorrow.
A candlelight rally, hosted by Danwon high school, took place at Hwarang park in Ansan on Saturday, where people united in one thought.... hopes of finding the survivors safe and sound.
The event was scheduled to start at 8 p.m., but mourners arrived even earlier than expected, with more people joining the rally as the time went by.
It followed a similar event Friday at Danwon high school,... with students and parents sending condolences to the victims and praying for the safe return of the missing.
Meanwhile, the news of their candlelight spread,... with people from cities all over the nation passing on their thoughts and prayers through other vigils.
Over in Busan, Buddhist monks held a candlelight vigil ahead of the opening of the Lotus Lantern Festival in Yongdusan Park.
Most spring festivals which were due kick off in April and May have been canceled or postponed out of respect for the victims of the sunken vessel.
Everyone in Korea continues to hold out hope for any sign of good news, for any sign that more survivors will be found.

Memorial service held in Ansan on 5th anniversary of Sewol-ho tragedy
잊지 않겠습니다… 오늘 안산서 세월호참사 5주기 기억식
April 16th, 2014.
The Sewol-ho ferry carrying mostly high school students on a fied trip sank and took lives.
Various events were held across the country to remember the victims.
Our Kim Mok-yeon starts us off from one of the largest memorial ceremonies held today.
People were silent as a siren blared out for a minute,... marking the beginning of the memorial service for the 304 victims who lost their lives on this day,... five years ago.
Today's memorial event is taking place at Hwarang Public Garden in Ansan, near Danwon High School, where 261 of the victims were from.
Some 5,000 people, including the bereaved families and government officials took part in the event.
The nation's education minister expressed her condolences and said that she feels a grave sense of responsibility.
Even though five years have passed, the exact cause of the tragedy still hasn't been revealed. The Moon Jae-in administration will reveal the truth at all costs and create a safer country that citizens can trust.
Musical instruments were played, and a choir sang as part of the commemorative performances.
The audience was moved to tears when one student survivor of the tragedy recited her letter to the victims.
Dear friends, I feel that my longing for you is similar to guilt. What has separated us? The fact that you are not here to hear how sorry I am (that I survived) is so painful. But I will try to grow as a competent person so that you guys will be proud of me when we meet again.
One representative of the family members of the victims said that relatives are still suffering from traumatic memories, demanding stern punishment for those responsible.
Our innocent children lost their lives but those responsible still haven't been punished. The state and those who had power back then, neglected their duty. We also need to bring our children back in Ansan and create a 4.16 Life and Security Park so that the country will be reminded not to repeat the same mistake ever again.
Spring has become a reminder of the Sewol-ho incident for many South Korean citizens.
Carrying yellow ribbons, a symbol to honor the memory of the victims and their families, participants vowed not to forget the lives lost.
