Statue of Ta Dumbong and the Legend of Battambang (Lost Stick) - Battambang, Cambodia
WestIslandKev: June 14, 2013 - Battambang, Cambodia.
Battambang in English means lost stick At the traffic circle on National Road 5 at the eastern edge of town, there is a statue of Ta Dumbong who is at the center of the legend behind the lost stick, the namesake of this city and province.
Legend has it that Ta Dumbong, a cowherder, found a magic stick and used it to usurp the king at that time. The king's son ran off to the woods and became a monk. In the meantime, Ta Dambong had a dream that a holy man on a white horse would vanquish him, so he decided it would be a good idea to have all the holy men rounded up and put to death. When the prince, now a practicing monk, heard he was required to go into town, a hermit came up and gave him a white horse. When the prince got on the horse he discovered it could fly and he flew into town. Upon seeing this holy man on a flying white horse Ta Dambong realised his dream was coming true and in an attempt to kill the 'holy man' he threw his magic stick at him and seeing this fail to stop the holy man on a white horse, he fled the area where neither he nor the magic stick was ever seen again.

“The teeth are made from bayonets. The Khmer Rouge would stab people to save bullets. The rest of the Naga heads were made from cut up AK-47 machine guns,” says Mr. Vanndy.
After the war, the Japanese government paid for a program to collect and destroy guns from former Khmer Rouge soldiers.
“They’d collect guns and in exchange build the village a water well or something else useful - in order to get the guns out of people’s hands.”
The statue’s structure resembles a traditional Khmer harvesting sickle. This forms the “tail”. Then Mr. Vanndy added five Naga heads to represent the Cambodian people.
“An ancient hindu legend says the Khmer people descended from the Naga.”
It’s estimated that the Khmer Rouge murdered 2 million of their own Cambodian citizens - including Mr. Vanndy’s father, aunt and uncle.

The man with the magic black stick
For once in Cambodia, the bus company “did what it said on the tin”. The Mekong Express VIP bus from Phnom Penh was indeed a VIP bus. Complete with spacious and comfortable leather seats, air-conditioning that worked and, somewhat bizarrely, a mirrored ceiling, it was a little like an 1980s London nightclub. Unlike most Cambodian buses, the blaring Cambodian pop music was completely absent. It was a very comfortable journey, even the driver lacked the usual psychopathic tendencies prevalent amongst Cambodia bus drivers. The 5 hour trip was actually quite enjoyable.
The legend of how Battambang came to be..
On the way into the city we are greeted by a giant statue of a man holding a black stick. His name? Ta Dumbong, As the legend goes, this is how the town was named:
Statue of Ta Dumbong - aka the man with the black stick
Statue of Ta Dumbong – aka the man with the black stick
He was a cow herd who found a magic black stick and used it to usurp the king. After the king was deposed his sons ran off into the woods and became monks.
When he became king, Ta Dumbong had a dream that a holy man on a white horse would one day defeat him. As a pre-emptive strike he rounded up all the holy men he could find and had them put them to death. The prince, who was by then a monk, heard that all holy men were required to go into town. A hermit came to him and presented him with a beautiful white horse. When the prince mounted the horse, he discovered it could fly, so he flew into the town.
When Ta Dumbong saw the prince flying towards him on the white horse, he realised his dream was coming true. In an attempt to kill the holy man on a white horse, he threw his magic stick, at the prince but it missed. On seeing this, the king fled and was never seen again. Neither was the magic stick.
The town is so pronounced as the translation from Khmer to french. Actual pronunciation of Battambang is Bat-dam-bong, named after Ta DumBong. Is there a moral to this story? Probably not, but to err on the side of caution, when arriving in Battambang, best not to do so on a white horse and definitely don’t carry a black stick – it may upset the locals!
Battambang, a sleepy city on the banks of the Sangkae river was where we had decided to rest up in for a week, just for a change of pace. It is a pleasant town and is worthy of a few days in its own right but many of the major sights are out in the countryside and are well worth a visit. We engaged the service of Chan. A tuk tuk driver during the week but at weekends he studies agriculture at university. He funds his education by renting a tuk tuk weekdays during the high season and taking visitors out and about the city and countryside. He spoke excellent english and was a great source of information as well as good company. $20 for the day was money well spent.

Battambang is Cambodia's second most populous city and a popular tourist destinationdue to the many nearby ancient temples, the infamous bamboo railway. It is also the capital city of the Battambang province. Damrei Sa wat (the one with the dead man's statue), in Battambang, Cambodia
BATS. / Battambang, Cambodia / August, 2015
As the sun descends over Battambang, Cambodia, a cave housing millions of fruit bats begins to stir. First, you hear them. Then, you see them flying in circles -- but not leaving the cave. Finally, an exodus.
A non-stop stream of fruit bats emerges from the cave and begins its collective journey to find ALL OF THE FRUIT. It is an amazing site — I couldn’t get enough. While most onlookers had enough after 5 or 10 minutes, I was there until it was too dark to really see anything. Something about it was mesmerizing to me. So. Many. Bats.

The figure of Buddha in royal attire seated on a seven-headed naga was a popular Mahayana image during the thirteenth century. It originated in Nagarjunakonda in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh and developed further in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia.
This interpretation of this image as the naga Muchalinda protecting the enlightened Buddha during a storm is now refuted as a later Theravada reading. It is most likely the supreme Adi Buddha of the Tantric tradition, with the naga representing the rising of subtle energy (kundalini) through the seven energy centers (chakra) in the practitioners body in his progress to enlightenment. The highest chakra points, the throat and had - where enlightenment is said to take place - are represented here on the nagas's chest and hood.
Battambang Province, Cambodia Country, ខេត្តបាត់ដំបង, ប្រទេសកម្ពុជា (KH)
Battambang Province
The name Battambang [ɓat ɗɑm ɓɑːŋ], literally means Loss of Staff in Khmer, referring to the local legend of Preah Bat Dambang Kranhoung (Kranhoung Staff King).
Battambang is Cambodia's second-largest city and the capital of Battambang Province, which was founded in the 11th century. It is the former capital of Monton Khmer.
Battambang, located in northwestern Cambodia, contains the second most populous city in the country after Phnom Penh. It's a riverside town, sitting on the Sangker River just south west of the Tonle Sap Lake. The provincial capital, also Battambang, has always been a popular destination with remarkably well-preserved French colonial architecture buildings alongside traditional Cambodian houses. The nearby countryside harbors old Buddhist shrines (pagodas), Angkorian era ruins (ancient temples), caves, waterfalls, and Khmer Rouge period killing fields. The province features a range of cultures as well as natural resources. Seventy five percent of the area is jungles and mountains.
Bordering provinces are Banteay Meanchey to the north, Pursat to the east and south, Siem Reap to the northeast, and Pailin to the west. The northern and southern extremes of the province's western boundaries form part of the international border with Thailand. In addition, Tonle Sap forms part of the northeastern boundary between Siem Reap and Pursat. Battambang is subdivided into 14 districts (Banan, Thma Koul, Battambang, Bavel, Ek Phnum, Mong Ruessei, Rotanak Mondol, Sangkae, Samlot, Sampov Lun, Phnom Proek, Kamrieng, Koas Krala, Rukhak Kiri).
Battambang city is a peaceful and pleasant place these days. The main parts of the city are situated closed to the Sangker River, a tranquil, small body of water that winds its way through Battambang Province. It is a nice, picturesque setting. With a population of 1,036,523, it ranks as the third most populous province. In land area, Battambang is the fifth largest province of Cambodia. Battambang is one of the provinces included in the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve. The province's fertile rice fields have led to a mostly agricultural economy giving rise to the moniker the Rice Bowl of Cambodia.
During the Angkor period, this land was so fertile that rice crops, fruit and vegetables produced excellent yields. Many Khmer people settled there as indicated by the existence of so many ancient temples in the area. With the exception of the temples of Wat Banon, Ek Phnom, Baseth, Stung, Banteay Tey, Banteay Chmar, etc, other monuments, which were built by dignitaries and subjects at the time as places of worship to God and other deities of Buddhism and Hinduism, almost completely disappeared.
The province of Battambang was completely liberated from the genocidal regime on January 13, 1979. At that time, the People’s Committee of commune-Sangkat was founded through the first-ever elections in 1983. Between 1979 and 1986, Battambang had 9 districts and one provincial town.
In 1986, three new districts were created: Banan, Bovel, and Ek Phnom. Until that point, Battambang had 12 districts and 1 provincial town. In 1988, however 5 districts were separated and incorporated into the newly founded province of Banteay Meanchey.
In 1998, following the integration of the remaining territory of the former Democratic Kampuchea, the province of Battambang saw part of its territory separated for the municipality of Pailin, while 4 new districts were established: Samlot, Kamreang, Phnom Proeuk and Sampov Loun. In 2000, part of the district of Maung Russey was split off to become the district of Koas Krolor. Today, the province of Battambang has 14 districts, including Rukhak Kiri district, covering an area of 1,162,200 hectares
Until recently Battambang was off the map for road travellers, but facilities have recently been improved and it makes a great base for visiting the nearby temples, such as Phnom Sampeu Resort (Sam Pov Mountain), a hill with caves of Buddha statues; the 12th Century Prasat Snung (Snung Temple), an Angkorian temple now occupied as a Buddhist shrine; Wat Baydamram where thousands of fruit bats reside, Phnom Banon (Wat Banan or Banan temple) and Wat Ek Phnom (Ek Phnom temple), Barseat Temple, Boeng Kam Ping Puoy Resort (Kam Ping Puoy Lake), Sek Sak Resort, Museum, Bamboo trains, as well as the closedby villages and many interested places for visiting.
