Hiking & Biking in Taiwan - Trip to Taichung & Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County - [台灣爬山] 台中和日月潭之旅
If you are on a trip around Taiwan, make sure to visit the infamous Sun Moon Lake in Taichung.
Be aware of the fact that this is one of Taiwan's most well-known tourist attractions, and therefore can get quite touristy. However, it is most definitely worth the visit!
Sun Moon Lake sits in the foothills of Taiwan’s Central Mountain Range in Nantou County. This impressive body of water is surrounded by forested peaks featuring plenty of hiking trails.
Around the lake you'll find Formosan Aboriginal-style restaurants and hand-crafts, as well as Sun Moon Lake Tea shops.
The most enjoyable way to explore this stunning piece of nature is by bike and foot - you'll find multiple shops that rent bikes for the day. There is also a cable car that offers scenic views over the mountains and water.
MONSTER VILLAGE TAIWAN/XITOU
#Monstervillage
#xitoumonstervillageinnantoutaiwan
Quirky Japanese theme park? Cultural-historical oddity? Full-on tourist trap? Awesomely freaky place to spend the night?
It’s hard to sum up the Xitou Monster Village (aka Nantou Monster Village) in just a few words, so you’ll have to read on below to find out exactly what on Earth it is.
While difficult to define, and despite its somewhat remote location at the terminal end of County Highway 151 in mountainous Nantou county, the Xitou Monster Village sees a staggering 200,000 visitors a month, making it one of the most popular things to do in Nantou and most unusual places to visit in Taiwan. If you like quirky sights, then definitely consider adding it to your Taiwan tour itinerary!
It’s worth noting that a trip to Xitou Monster Village is easily combined with Sun Moon Lake, and the Sun Moon Lake Xitou pass saves you money if you are coming by bus from Taichung.
There are also gorgeous tea fields and other scenic attractions to enjoy around Xitou. If you are visiting from Taichung, be sure to check out my articles on the top things to do in Taichung, how to plan your Taichung itinerary, and 10 other Taichung day trip ideas!
Xitou Monster Village can also be visited on this Monster Village Day Tour from Taichung, which also includes a stop at a Mochi Museum and bamboo forest. It is also possible to combine a trip to Monster Village with this trip to Lotus Forest and Sun Link Sea (Shanlinxi), a remote area of spooky forests, misty trails, and waterfalls.

Travel in Taiwan (Jan./Feb., 2017):
Jiufen
A trip to the mountain village of Jiufen and its “little sister,” Jinguashi, sits atop the list of things to do for many tourists visiting Taiwan. Both settlements are located in the scenic coastal mountains overlooking the northeast coast, both were once thriving mining centers (copper and gold), and both are worth spending a good amount of time exploring. Below are five places and things to experience/check out/enjoy while there.
Jiufen Old Street
After arriving at Jiufen, most tourists head straight to the Old Street, a narrow and winding pedestrian-only alley lined with souvenir shops and eateries on both sides. Apart from trying some yummy hot or cold (depending on time of year) tapioca and sweet-potato ball soup (Jiufen’s best-known specialty), have a cup of tea at Jiufen A Mei Teahouse, in a beautiful and well-preserved wooden structure with great views, and visit the close-by Shengping Theater, Taiwan’s first cinema, built in 1914 to entertain miners during the heyday of mining in Jiufen.
Jiufen Evening Scenery
Back in Jiufen, make sure to stick around until the evening when the weather is fine. The mountainside-hugging town faces the northwest, meaning that the sun will set to the left when looking out over the coast. The sunset can be quite remarkable and dramatic, especially when there is a scattering of clouds in the sky, a common occurrence on the northeast coast.
Getting there:
Bus from Taipei: There is frequent bus service (No. 1062) from near MRT Zhongxiao Fuxing Station (Exit 1) in downtown Taipei to Jiufen and Jinguashi. The ride takes about an hour.
Railway plus bus: Alternatively, take an eastbound train (heading to Yilan/Hualien) to Ruifang and transfer to a bus bound for Jiufen/Jinguashi or further on to Fulong (passing the Golden Waterfall).

Walking Around Beitou (Taipei, Taiwan)
Walking around Beitou / 北投區:
• Historical Beitou Station
• Puji Temple
• Beitou Museum
• Liuhuanggu Sulfur Valley Geothermal Scenic Area
• Fuxing Park Foot-Soaking Pool
Beitou District is the northernmost of the twelve districts of Taipei City, Taiwan. The historical spelling of the district is Peitou. The name originates from the Ketagalan word Kipatauw, meaning witch. Beitou is the most mountainous and highest of Taipei's districts, encompassing a meadow with rivers running through the valley which have abundant steam rising from them; the result of geothermal warming. The valley is often surrounded by mist shrouding the trees and grass. Beitou is famous for its hot springs.
In the early Japanese era, Hokuto (Pak-tâu) was a village at the entrance of the well-known North Formosa sulfur district.[3] Three Japanese extracting plants in this district produced about 200 short tons (180,000 kg) of sulfur monthly. The Japanese had already recognized the value of the village as a sanitary resort and constructed a Japanese inn with hot mineral baths provided by the sulfur springs. The hot springs have been developed to include aroma therapy, massage, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, and excellent cuisine which complement the entire spa experience.
In addition to the waters, Xin Beitou's other attraction was the girls, and the area had the dubious distinction of being one of Taiwan's largest illegal red light districts. During the 60s, many characterless concrete hotels were built around the park area, and these structures remained the dominant feature of Beitou's landscape for over twenty years.
The late 80's and 90s, however, ushered in a new era. The government made a concerted effort to clean up the area, and the MRT line reached Beitou. As a result, the concrete hotels were either demolished and rebuilt or totally refurbished as luxury spas. In addition, many new apartments were constructed to accommodate young professionals with families who were drawn to the Beitou area because of its good environment and convenient transportation links to downtown Taipei.
Wander around the Nantou Old Town – Cities, Grow in Difference
Let's follow the filming team and explore the Nantou Old Town, the main venue of UABB2017! The most important events are those little things that happen in the street.
Themed on Cities, Grow in Difference, the 7th Bi-City Biennale of UrbanismArchitecture in 2017 will be a tailor-made one for urban villages, which are the product of the conflict between the rapid urbanization and the urban-rural duality leftover from the planned economy era in China. The unique exhibition environment of the urban village pushes us to redefine and rethink the structure and experience of UABB.

The township is on the west coast of Taiwan, facing the Taiwan Strait. Next to Tainan and Mengjia, Lugang is the second greatest historical town in Taiwan with at least a 350 year history. It is located in Changhua County in central Taiwan. Unlike Tainan’s historical with modern mixes, Lugang has no high-rise buildings. It has only Quan and Zhang regional buildings with Baroque-styled architecture.

Things To Do In Yilan County Taiwan
I’ve been planning (or let’s say tempted) to visit Taiwan several times last year, ever since they have lifted visas for Filipinos entering the country. I came close to booking a flight during one of the local airline’s seats sale but unfortunately, things didn’t really work out as planned (dreamed). Good thing, before 2018 came to a close, I got a chance to visit Taiwan, though not the capital, I still got to explore the country’s northeastern town, Yilan County.
Yilan is situated in Taiwan’s Northeastern coastline. Our local guide mentioned that Yilan is regarded as Taiwan’s backyard or backyard garden because it is surrounded by ocean and mountains, making it a nature-destination trip especially if you are coming from a busy city like Taipei.
Join me in this vlog as I tag you along in some of the best spots to see when visiting Yilan.
Here are the places we visited:
3:17 Agrioz Candied Fruit Factory & Museum
5:20 Hill-Top Yilan
7:06 Dongmen Night Market
8:08 The Jimmy Square
8:39 Taiwan Theater Museum
11:40 Er-Wang Community
12:42 Yilan County Government Office
13:14 Yilan County Historical Museum
13:44 Yilan Distillery
16:00 Yilan Literary Museum
16:57 Memorial Hall of Founding of Yilan Administration
17:39 Quingshui Geothermal Park
20:53 Wai'ao Beach
Also, you can read all about these places in my blog:

Hotel Room Tour: Sun Moon Lake Resort in Nantou, Taiwan
Filmed on May 12, 2018: This is in the newest hotel building built in 2016 in this whole resort. I unfortunately did not film the elevators here unlike I did in the older building from 1989 in case if anyone asks me, that's 'cause they are just basic and generic types that aren't anything too special. But here I did a full room tour of this resort. If anyone who travels to Taiwan and are near this place, I HIGHLY recommend you visiting the Sun Moon Lake Resort! With that said, I hope you enjoy this!

Taiwan Episode 10 - Seeing China from Taiwan
This episode is the last one of the arch we started with episode 8 (episode 8 9 & 10 should have been only one episode but I realized while editing it was totally impossible).
We are more talkative in this one and after some more wandering in the city we are exploring an old military base in Jiangongyu islet with an improbable yet incredible view over China cityscape in the horizon, looking even more magical with the sunset.
This was the day of our arrival in Kinmen and we already realized this experience was going to be beyond our expectations.
