Get To Know A Tiny Taiwanese Fishing Village-Yehliu, Northern Taiwan
Yehliu Geo Park is one of Northern Taiwan’s top tourist sites attracting on average over 3 million visitors yearly. It’s a fun place and interesting spot with numerous natural rock formations including their most famous, “Queen’s head”, named so for it’s resemblance to the profile of Queen Elizabeth I, some even comparing it to Nefertiti. It’s a Disneyland for rock lovers and as you can imagine it’s usually crowded almost anytime during the day. Sitting right next to the park is the fishing village of Yehliu, which is usually quiet except for meal times when some of the tourists stray away from the geo park and food stalls and souvenir stands that surround it and head to one of the many seafood restaurants that serve the amazing bounty of the North China sea. Other than the density of seafood restaurants, that perhaps could not sustain themselves without the massive tourist attraction next door it’s a pretty typical Northern Taiwanese fishing village, with lots of men fishing off of the docks, boats in the harbour equipped with watermelon sized lanterns, numerous temples and shrines, and beautiful views towards the park and sea. I know that many will miss the charm of places like this especially if they are ferried in by tourist buses with guides that are in a hurry to meet the promises of a day spent seeing all of the sites of Northern Taiwan. Most are simply looking to rack up tourist spots visited with selfies to share back home, the traveller that judges a good trip based on the volume of places they've seen. There's nothing wrong with that if in the end you're satisfied with your vacation. However if you want to experience the real Taiwan perhaps even engaging a little with locals, like the man who showed me the squid eggs in one of his tanks, then spend more time exploring and worry less about the number of things you see. I've found lots of interesting places literally on the fringes of tourist spots. Always my biggest take aways are those moments of interaction with locals that are far more endearing than a checked off list of sites. But do see Yehliu Geo Park next door, it’s worth the visit! Xiahai City God Temple (台北霞海城隍廟) in Taiwan
This Xiahai City God Temple (台北霞海城隍廟) is a very famous temple near Dihua Street (迪化街) in Taipei, Taiwan. Xiahai City God protects the city (and people) from calamities and the like. There are many deity figures for praying to inside the temple, including a famous one for people trying to find a mate (figure called Old Man Under the Moon). If you pay attention to the details, you will notice that some figures were originally painted a different color but over time the incense soot collected on them turning them black in color. Because of this phenomena over time, many figures became black, and now, even in the yearly parades, the masks of the performers are purposely painted in black to resemble the statues! I am unsure if newer made statues were purposely painted in black, but those statues near the back definitely turned black from all the soot collected from the burning of the incense (joss) sticks. This turning black from soot probably influenced future statue makers to paint them black.
History:
During the Daoguang (道光) period of the Qing (清) dynasty China in 1821, hundreds of people moved to Taiwan from 五鄉 village, Xiacheng city (霞城 or also called 下店鄉 back then), Tong'an county (同安縣), Quanzhou Prefecture (泉州府), Fujian province. They carried with them a golden XiaHai (霞海) City God figure with them. The name XiaHai (霞海) comes from the combination of Xia (霞) from Xiacheng city (霞城) and hai (海) from the 臨海門 gate, which is near the sea (close to 下店鄉 in ancient times and now near 集美区后溪镇城内村). The actual 臨海門 gate was supposedly dug up in 1993 and put on display in a nearby temple (集美後溪霞城城隍廟). Tong'an (同安縣) was actually a county back then (bigger in size), so it included the Xiacheng (霞城) and 臨海門 gate. In any case, to continue with the story, the people settled in Bajia (八甲) Village in Taiwan, which is near Lao Song (老松) Elementary School on Guangzhou (廣州) Street in modern Taipei. Chen Jinrong (陳金絨) placed the Xiaha City God in his shop to serve as a temple. In 1853, Bajia (八甲) Village was destroyed during a gang war between the arrived Tong'an county people and people from three local counties of Jinjiang (晉江), Hui'an (惠安), and Nan'an (南安). The Tong'an people then took the statue and escaped to Dadaocheng. From 1858-1859, Chen Jinrong (陳金絨) and Chen Jiancheng (陳建成) received donated gold from followers and constructed a new temple in Dadaocheng in pure Minnan (閩南) architectural style. In 2005, Taipei city government tore it down and constructed a new temple and temple courtyard with the size of 50.3 ping (close to 166 square meters). The video shows the temple today during some minor renovation.
Taiwan| Ang Douna Bridge
Duona bridge was previously known as Tunzi, a name derived from its Japanese name. It is said that two hunters and their dog passed by Duona village while they were hunting. In earlier times, there was a swamp near the village, and every time the dog passed the swamp, it was unwilling to leave. The hunters returned to their hometown and when they came back to the village with the chief, they found that the area near the swamp, with its ample water supply and protection provided by the mountains, was a good place to live. After a series of discussion, the villagers decided to move to the site that is today’s village. They spread and expanded a second village, then a third, eventually forming the large village that is today’s Duona Village.
Sinwei Forest Park
Sinwei Forest Park is located in the 45km of Provincial Highway 28, and on the west side of the Laonong River. It is part of the old riverbed of Laonong River and later built into a nursery due to its excellent soil quality. It is known as the Pingding by residents. An area of 30 Ackers, mainly to plant saplings, cultivated as many as 200 kinds of species, is the Taiwan's largest nursery. Now it has been changed to Forest Park, managed by the Maolin National Scenic Area Administration.
Inside the woods, always be green on spring and summer. Most of them are mahogany, bamboo and Chinese fir. It is one of the mahogany avenues, surrounded by trees. In the late winter and early spring, mahogany green leaves will be red and yellow and full of trails of leaves; it is poetic scenery. The rows of trees extending from the natural promenade are with the exotic scenery. It often attracts many couples come for a walk. Also it is the designated location for many couples to take wedding photos.
