Tannourine Cedar Forest Lebanon
Tannourine Cedar Forest Nature Reserve LEBANON
22 April 2017 Aerial shot w/ DJI Mavic
The Tannourine Cedars Forest Nature Reserve protects one of the largest and densest cedar forests in Lebanon. Eighty percent of the trees in the forest are cedars. The unique geography and topography of the forest has sheltered the area from excessive tourist activity. The hiking trails, here, in the rocky terrain of the mountains are not for the faint of heart. However, a trip to Tannourine is well worth it. The stunning mountainous landscape, with cedars seemingly defying gravity and growing on extremely vertical slopes, is impressive. Visitors will also enjoy the opportunity to discover rock-cut or naturally occurring grottos on their hike, as well as rare flowers particular to this high altitude terrain.

Tannourine (also Tannoureen, Tannorine, in Arabic تنورين) is a Lebanese municipality located in the Batroun District, part of the Mohafazah (Governorate) of North-Lebanon, 75 km from the capital Beirut.
The village also shares its name with a cedar forest of some 60,000 trees, making it the 2nd largest cedar reserve in Lebanon. The landscape overlooking the historic valley of Ain-Al-Raha is ideal for the culture of cedars, which grow in abundance. These cedars can be seen along the road that goes north to Hadath al-Jebbeh, which, although in poor condition, winds its way through wild and isolated scenery up to the Kadisha Valley gorge, leading to Bsharri.

Al-Shouf Cedar Reserve - Maasser Cedar Forest, Lebanon
Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in the Chouf District of Lebanon. It is located on the slopes of Barouk mountain and has an area of 550 km2, nearly 5.3% of the Lebanese territory. The reserve contains the Lebanon Cedar forests of Barouk, Maaser el Shouf and Ain Zhalta. It is an Important Bird Area (IBA) and Eco-tourism area. It hosts 32 species of wild mammals, 200 species of birds, and 500 species of plants. The cedar forests of Lebanon enjoy the unique distinction as the oldest documented forests in history. The cedars were important enough in the history of man to be traceable to the very earliest written records, that of the Sumerians in the third millennium BC. In the ancient Sumerian story, The Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the oldest pieces of literature in the world, the Cedars feature prominently. Gilgamesh has since been recognized as King Gilgamesh of history and in probability visited Mount Lebanon. Some cedars are estimated to be 2,000 years old.
We would like to thank my Dad and Bashir for making this possible and for their wonderful hospitality and kindness. We love you.
Saving a Cedar Forest - Nasri Kawar
The Tannourine cedar forest is the largest forest in Lebanon. It has been declared a nature reserve in 1999. In recent years, a serious new insect pest, Cephalcia tannourinensis, appeared causing severe damage to trees. AUB scientists, Nasri S. Kawar and Nabil Nemer, have been involved in studying the life cycle of the pest and developing means of minimizing its damage.
Financial support has been received from GEF-UNEP, FAO, Lebanese Ministries of Agriculture and environment. The DVD shows the accomplishments in managing this insect pest and related activities that have been supported throught a $1.2 million project entitled Integrated Management of Cedar Forests in Lebanon in Collaboration with other Mediterranean Countries funded by GEF-UNEP to the Ministry of Environment and implemented by AUB from 2004-2007.

Tannourine: A Beautiful Village Close to God, The Cedars Reserve
Tannourine is a Lebanese municipality located in the Batroun District, part of the Mohafazah (Governorate) of North-Lebanon, 75 km from the capital Beirut.
Tannourine is the plural of the Syriac word Tannour. A Tannour is an old stone oven used in ancient times. The very first settlers established a number of Tannours in Tannourine-Al-Fawqa, and later settled down the valley in Tannourine-Al-Tahta, where a more fertile landscape allowed local agriculture to thrive.
Tannourine lies in a collection of valleys and ravines accessible either from Douma, a backroad from Bsharri or from a newly constructed highway direct from Batroun.
Other companion trees like Cupressus, Pinus, Abies, Populus and others constitute a very rich ecosystem in planter species. The fauna described as being present in this type of unique ecosystem range from the various types of birds (eagles, owls, robins, etc...) to wild animals (hyenas, boars, squirrels, snakes and bats).
