Paddy cum Fish Farming in Ziro Valley
Now is the harvesting season in the valley of Ziro and in Tajang village, the women are seen out in the fields and picking out the rice from the paddy crops. The Ziro valley which is known for its massive yield, is unique in a lot of ways. The tradition of paddy cum pisciculture is very unique to the Ziro Valley.
The Apatani, or Tanii, are a tribal group of people living in the Ziro valley in the Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh in India. However more Apatanis live outside this valley, making the total population approximately 60,000 all over the state.
Apatani women carry out the household chores of gathering both wild and kitchen garden vegetables, cooking, fetching water, pounding rice, cleaning houses, washing clothes and utensils, nursing, looking after infants and children, ginning (clothes) and spinning of cotton, and other jobs associated with the household. In the field, the Apatani woman carries out the tasks that include gardening, seeding, transplanting of paddy and millet, weeding of fields, and other activities. At home, the internal family income is controlled by a woman. But the man also has his part of duty in looking after cultivation activities, and acts as the head of family in society.
Ziro is a census town in Lower Subansiri district in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It has been a favorite town for World Heritage Site for a number of years now. View from a train in North India - slow motion of railway tracks
Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh is connected with other parts through the railway head at Guwahati. And the view from the train is somewhat like this.
Ziro is situated in Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh, 167 kms from the capital Itanagar. It can be reached via road from Guwahati or Dibrugarh towns in Assam.
A spectacular location, open air gigs, campfires, tents and living in the outdoors amidst picturesque landscapes are just some of the things that wait to refresh your mind at Ziro. Artistes from across the country met likeminded individuals hailing from different parts of the globe. Last year, the festival saw over 150 musicians, artists, and creative minds be a part of this cultural celebration.
This year, Ziro Festival of Music's second edition saw a great curated line-up of musicians such as Whirling Kalapas from Mumbai, Lee Ranaldo and Stevel Shelley from USA, Menwhopause from Delhi, Sky Rabbit from Mumbai, Imphal Talkies from Imphal, Dosser's Urge from Shillong, Shaair + Func from Mumbai and many more.
Just 167km from the capital, Itanagar, Ziro is one of the oldest towns in Arunachal Pradesh. Situated in a valley, it is at a height of over 5500 feet above sea level, with a beautiful view of the mountains that surround it.
Ziro is primarily home to the Apatanis -- simple, friendly and hospitable people with an interesting culture and legacy. They are a non-nomadic, agrarian tribe who share a responsible relationship with nature. Apatanis cultivate permanent wet land cultivations instead of dry land cultivations which involves burning forests. Ziro valley is lush with paddy farms and is known for its unique paddy cum fi sh cultivation where using traditional irrigation methods, farmers rear fish in the knee-deep water. Keeping them company are the adorable, shy, and harmless Indian Bisons.
