Ancient road uncovered in Turkey’s Tarsus
Works at an archaeological site in the southern province of Mersin’s historical Tarsus district have unearthed an ancient road.
In a written statement, Tarsus Museum Director Mehmet Çavuş said drainage work in the field had revealed an ancient road built using the polygonal technique.
Çavuş said a number of shops and terra-cotta jacking pipes were also discovered uncovered at the western section of the ancient road.
“The basalt ancient road is 215 meters away from the historical Cleopatra Gate, known as the naval gate. It was one of the main arterial roads providing access to Mersin. The road has the same features as the Ancient Street, which was discovered in the center of Tarsus during excavations carried out between 1993 and 2003,” he added.

St.Paul Church in Tarsus Turkey
St Paul Monument Museum (The Church of St. Paul)
The adoption of Christianity as the official religion in the 4th C. A.D. by the Emperor Constantine meant the end of religious suppression and that churches started to be built. From the 5th C. many churches were built that were dedicated to St. Paul. Several of these churches, according to the European travellers that came here, were built in Tarsus, the birthplace of St. Paul. Nowadays only one survives and this is the reason that the Church of St. Paul is held in such high importance. The building covers an area of 460 m2 with the main monumental entrance to the north. Directly to the right of the entrance is a garden where the water well of the church is located.

Anatolian Costumes of Ionia, Caria, Lycia and Tarsus
The song is AX TA MATIA SOY (ah ta matia sou) from Guardians of Hellenism VOL 3 (Smyrna, Ionian Coast).
Anatolia (Aνατολή), which means East in Greek, which is now modern Turkey, was the heartland of Byzantium before the Ottoman invasion. There are various ethnic influences in its culture. Of course, many parts of Anatolia also have remnants of the glorious Ancient Greek civilization.
Featured in the video are costumes from: Smyrne(Σμύρνη) in Ionia (Ἰωνία), Halicarnassus (Ἁλικαρνᾱσσός) in Caria, Baris in Lycia (Λυκία) and Zephyrion (Ζεφύριον) near Tarsus (Ταρσός).
The Apostle Paul's Well in Tarsus
From
- St. Paul's Well is in a courtyard long believed to be the site of St. Paul's house, which is approximately 300 meters north of the Republic Area in Kızılmurat District. Archaeological studies have shown St. Paul's Well and surrounding areas to have Roman, Byzantium and Ottoman Period cultural layers. The site is a pilgrimage destination for some and the water from the well is believed to have healing powers. To see my other videos of Turkey, go to
