«4+2» Technohoros Art Gallery

20th edition! The greatest art event in Greece will open at the Faliro Pavilion (TaeKwonDo
Stadium) on Friday 27 May will run through Sunday 29 May.
Art-Athina is one of the oldest international art fairs collectively organised as well as firmly
established at the conscience of the art-loving audience. The 21st “Art-Athina” takes place
in a period of significant changes in the artistic field of Greece and forecasts a new era for
contemporary art in Greece.
The Hellenic Art Galleries Association, which instituted Art-Athina in 1993, as well as
EuroMare which organised the exhibition for the fourth consecutive year, have prepared a
commemorative event honoring the history of the art fair.
The Greek galleries and the galleries from abroad give, as always, their unique and vital
aspect in Art-Athina. 49 galleries from 13 countries provide a complete picture of the
contemporary artistic creation worldwide. It is also worth noting the increase in the
numbers of participants from abroad, which this year reached the 17, a 25% increase from
2015. In addition, cultural institutions such as museums, foundations, art publications and
media, will contribute to shaping a comprehensive view of the artistic landscape of our

National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens, Opening, Urgent Conversations: Athens – Antwerp
Urgent Conversations: Athens – Antwerp is the first temporary exhibition in the long overdue public unfolding of the Greek National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST). The project offers a reflective dialogue between the collections of EMST and M HKA, the Flemish Contemporary Art Museum, based in Antwerp. This exhibition commences the program EMST in the World.
The impulse of both Urgent Conversations: Athens – Antwerp and EMST in the World is the necessity of cultural dialogue on a global scale, also within multifaceted Europe. Societies nowadays tend to polarize in 49 % versus 51 % camps, negotiations start from antagonistic positions as a default position, introversion and individualism became entrenched states. There may be loftier aspirations than the capacity of conversation, but its recent fragility often reached critical levels and can be described as an urgent situation.
Urgent Conversations: Athens – Antwerp has been developed bottom up, each time starting from work of a Greek and a Belgian artist, that resonate, searching a notion that arises from this resonance, then adding a third artist from elsewhere in one of the two collections. In this way the exhibition was structured around 22 notions with each time work of three artists in a dialogue around it, the total consisting of more than 70 works from 66 artists.
This exhibition enacts the belief of both museums that works of art may constantly emanate new meanings, open questions and initiate a much desired dialogue, that basic ground for human culture. This project is therefore also a counter-proposal to cultural and curatorial sameness, opting instead for a multitude of convincing constellations of subjects, impossible to exhaust, leading up to discussions concerning both individual and collective realizations, and to actions.
Athens and Antwerp seem to represent two extremes of Europe today, but at the same time Greece and Flanders are both regions of Europe that added many crucial threads to its cultural fabric. Institutions like EMST and M HKA may further cultivate that. EMST in the World will develop in the same vein further dialectical relations between EMST and institutions elsewhere with corresponding aims and practices, geared to the research and curation of contemporary art and other contemporary cultural manifestations.

LP0042 - High King of Athens - Theseus' return from the Labyrinth, from Plutarch's Lives
Legendary Passages #0042 - High King of Athens -
Theseus' return from the Labyrinth, from Plutarch's Lives.
Last time Theseus abandoned Ariadne on Naxos. This time Theseus makes the long voyage home, loses his father, and becomes High King of Athens.
When the ship of Theseus neared the tip of Attica, called Sounion, King Aegeus spotted it. But since Theseus had forgotten to change the sails, his father thought him eaten by the Minotaur, and jumped to his death. The city was elated at the victory of Theseus, but his coronation was bittersweet.
Several festivals and traditions were started to commemorate the victory against Crete. The Ship of Theseus was preserved for centuries by replacing old wood with new, and philosophers debate whether it was the same ship or not.
Theseus consolidated the citizens of Attica and moved everyone into Athens proper. He also welcomed immigration and instituted democratic reforms. Coins were stamped with a bull, representing the Marathon Bull, the Minotaur, or Taurus, general of Minos.
This is the last episode for now focusing specifically on Theseus. Eventually he joins the Argonauts, gets left behind with Hercules, and falls in love with an Amazon princess...
High King of Athens,
a Legendary Passage,
from Plutarch's Life of Theseus,
translated by Bernadotte Perrin.
XXI. - XXV.
On his voyage from Crete, Theseus put in at Delos, and having sacrificed to the god and dedicated in his temple the image of Aphrodite which he had received from Ariadne, he danced with his youths a dance which they say is still performed by the Delians, being an imitation of the circling passages in the Labyrinth, and consisting of certain rhythmic involutions and evolutions.
This kind of dance, as Dicaearchus tells us, is called by the Delians The Crane, and Theseus danced it round the altar called Keraton, which is constructed of horns (kerata) taken entirely from the left side of the head. They say that he also instituted athletic contests in Delos, and that the custom was then begun by him of giving a palm to the victors.
It is said, moreover, that as they drew nigh the coast of Attica, Theseus himself forgot, and his pilot forgot, such was their joy and exultation, to hoist the sail which was to have been the token of their safety to Aegeus, who therefore, in despair, threw himself down from the rock and was dashed in pieces. But Theseus, putting in to shore, sacrificed in person the sacrifices which he had vowed to the gods at Phalerum when he set sail, and then dispatched a herald to the city to announce his safe return.
The messenger found many of the people bewailing the death of their king, and others full of joy at his tidings, as was natural, and eager to welcome him and crown him with garlands for his good news. The garlands, then, he accepted, and twined them about his herald's staff and on returning to the sea-shore, finding that Theseus had not yet made his libations to the gods, remained outside the sacred precincts, not wishing to disturb the sacrifice.
But when the libations were made, he announced the death of Aegeus. Thereupon, with tumultuous lamentation, they went up in haste to the city. Whence it is, they say, that to this day, at the festival of the Oschophoria, it is not the herald that is crowned, but his herald's staff, and those who are present at the libations cry out: “Eleleu! Iou! Iou!” the first of which cries is the exclamation of eager haste and triumph, the second of consternation and confusion.

Palimpsest of concepts, Yannis Stefanakis, Hellenic American Union, Athens
A “twofold”, solo exhibition of visual artist Yannis Stefanakis at the Hellenic American Union and Technohoros Art Gallery…The dual presentation of Yannis Stefanakis’ paintings and engravings is an extended tribute to the work of the well-known Greek visual artist. The collaboration of the two cultural institutions aspires to prompt the viewers to a physical and notional motion between two art spaces, thus highlighting both the protean dimension of the visual artist as well as the inner cohesion of his work.
Stefanakis’ paintings are presented for a month (May 9-June 9) at the Kennedy Gallery of the Hellenic American Union. The opening of the exhibition, which takes place on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at 20:00, includes a performance by soprano Fani Nalmpanti and guitarist Nikos Manitaras.
The exhibition presenting Stefanakis’ engravings opens at Technohoros Art Gallery on Thursday, May 24, at 20:00 and will last till June 16.
