Telfair Museum - Savannah, GA
Telfair Museums’ permanent collection of paintings, works on paper, photography, sculpture, and decorative arts contains over 4,500 objects from America, Europe, and Asia, dating primarily from the 18th-20th centuries.
Highlights include impressive examples of American Impressionism, with major paintings by Childe Hassam, Frederick Frieseke, and Gari Melchers. Ashcan School paintings filled with strong colors and bravura brush strokes are superbly represented at the Telfair with works by Robert Henri, George Bellows, and George Luks. The collection also includes several works by European expatriate Julian Story. His monumental painting Black Prince of Crecy, which depicts a pivotal 14th-century battle, is a favorite with Telfair visitors.
The Telfair boasts the largest public collection of visual art by Lebanese writer Kahlil Gibran, best known as author of The Prophet, in North America. The museum has over 80 artworks, including both paintings and drawings, by the popular literary figure.
The Telfair’s sculpture collection is complemented by the long-term loan of Sylvia Shaw Judson’s Bird Girl, known for its appearance on the dust jacket of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Vanessa German speaks at Telfair Museums' Jepson Center
Described by the Crystal Bridges Museum of Art as a “force of nature,” Vanessa German creates compelling works that invoke the power to protect children endangered by circumstance and location. Her “power figures” feature accumulations of found objects that decorate black figures she constructs from dolls and found objects, and imbues with beauty and magic. German is a vigorous advocate for children in her Pittsburgh neighborhood, creating safe spaces for art-making amid violence and danger. She launched Art House in a formerly derelict HUD home to offer children the opportunity to create beauty and build self-esteem. German, a sculptor, actress, performer and educator, has also pioneered a performance style called Spoken Word opera.

Representing fine examples of American and English silver, these four objects will further enhance our important silver holdings, a noted area of priority for Telfair Museums’ collections growth. The butter dish, basket and compote add to our Savannah-related collections, with the added bonus that the original owner, George Savage Owens, once lived in our beloved Owens-Thomas House. All three pieces demonstrate the highly decorative and elaborate design known as repoussé, a style popular after the second half of the nineteenth century, especially in the South. The wonderful griffin-shaped claret jug will fill a void in the collection, which currently lacks such an item of use. Very similar to a piece in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the eclectic claret jug with green eyes will appeal to visitors of all ages, especially children. All high-quality pieces, these four examples of silver will further elevate our significant collection of silver.

Telfair Museums' 4th Grade School Tour Program
Serving every fourth-grader in Chatham County, our annual school tour program provides 2,800 students with free tours of Telfair galleries, free interactive workshops, and free passes to the museum to share with their families. At the end of the program, all student artwork is featured in a curated exhibit at the Jepson Center, open to the public alongside national and international exhibitions.
This year, the students are learning about the sculptor Auguste Rodin. They are taken on a tour of the exhibition which includes 32 original Rodin sculptures in bronze, and complete a fun studio activity. In the studio, they create a mold of their hands using alginate then fill the mold with plaster to create a unique sculpture of their own hand.
The fourth-grade program is made possible by funding from the City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs; Gulfstream Aerospace; Great Dane Trailers, Inc; Mr. and Mrs. Dwaine L. Willett; the Johanna Anderson Trueblood Foundation; the Georgia Council for the Arts; the Byck-Rothschild Foundation; Ms. Candace Lanier; the Wells Fargo Foundation; the Kinder Morgan Foundation.
Transportation of students and other support is provided by the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System.
Supplies for the associated studio program were provided by Brasseler USA and Henry Schein Cares, with additional support from Blick Art Materials.
