Temple Cronan

Temple Cronan Monastic Site, Carron, The Burren

St Cronan founded the monastery here in the 7C. Tucked away in a little hollow is a delightful small pre-12C oratory, later rebuilt with Romanesque sculpture.
There are two tomb-shrines here with two sloping side sides and triangular shaped- pieces on the ends with a space for the pilgrim to put his hand in and touch the place where the saint is buried. The large plain tomb is said to be that of St Cronan. There is a Holy Well nearby, if you can find it, and also a Cross shaft and base to the NW.

Pollnagollum in the Burren, County Clare

This video is about the longest known cave in Ireland, Pollnagollum in the Burren limestone area of County Clare. The Mainstream passage and Branch Passage are shown. Both the surface landscape of the Caher valley and the cave underneath are dramatically beautiful and should be of interest to cavers and non-cavers who visit this globally known region of western Ireland.

Lough Derg RTE Documentary from 1991

Excerpt from a 1991 RTE Documentary that covered Lough Derg.

The footage is historic in that the east side of the island as viewed in the video has been totally redeveloped since this video was taken. The documentary also shows open boats which have now been replaced with more modern cabin boats that protect pilgrims from the elements during their crossing.

Despite the modern development on the island the core of the pilgrimage (the fasting, the bare feet, the prayers, the all night vigil and the penitential beds) is unchanged to this day.
