Poros, Greece - Poseidon Temple - AtlasVisual
Poros Video Map:
Very little remains of the Temple of Posiedon, located in the north of Poros. What was once a big Doric temple is largely in ruins today. An earthquake in 395 AD destroyed much of the temple. The temple dates to the 6th Century BC and functioned as a government center for some of the formation of a league for North Peloponnese states. Famous orator, Demosthenes, committed suicide here to escape in 322 BC, to escape capture by the King of Macedonia.

Sailing Through Greece: Saronic Gulf, E22 Temple of Poseidon, Sounio
Next Episode: Saronic Gulf E23, Poros, Assumption Bay
This Episode: Saronic Gulf E22 Temple of Poseidon. Cape Sounio (Sounion) is located 69 kilometres SE of Athens, at the southernmost tip of the Attica Peninsula in Greece. It is noted as the site of ruins of an ancient Greek temple of Poseidon, the god of the sea in classical mythology. The remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea. The ruins bear the deeply engraved name of English Romantic poet Lord Byron (1788–1823). Byron mentions Sounio in his poem Isles of Greece: place me on Sunium's marbled steep, where nothing, save the waves and I, may hear our mutual murmurs sweep...The site is a popular day-excursion for tourists from Athens, with the sunset over the Aegean Sea, as viewed from the ruins, a sought-after sight. According to Greek Mythology, Cape Sounio is the spot where Aegeus, king of Athens, leapt to his death off the cliff, thus giving his name to the Aegean Sea. The earliest literary reference to Sounio is in Homer's poem the Odyssey, probably composed in the 8th century BC. Ancient Greek religion was essentially propitiatory in nature, based on the notion that to avoid misfortune, one must constantly seek the favour of the relevant gods by prayers, gifts and sacrifices. In a maritime country like Greece, the god of the sea occupied a high position in the divine hierarchy. In power, Poseidon was considered second only to Zeus the supreme god of the Olympian pantheon. His implacable wrath, manifested in the form of storms, was greatly feared by all mariners. In an age without mechanical power, storms very frequently resulted in shipwrecks and drownings. The temple of Poseidon was constructed in 444–440 BC, over the ruins of a temple dating from the Archaic period. It is perched above the sea at a height of almost 60 metres . The design of the temple is a typical hexastyle, Only some columns of the Sounion temple stand today, but when intact it would have closely resembled the contemporary and well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus beneath the Acropolis, which may have been designed by the same architect. As with all Greek temples, the Poseidon building was rectangular, with a colonnade on all four sides. The total number of original columns was 34: 15 columns still stand today. The columns are of the Doric Order. They were made of locally quarried white marble. They were 6.10 m high, with a diameter of 1 m at the base and 79 cm at the top. Apart from its world-renowned archaeological site, Sounio is also an upscale summer home location for Athenians. Construction flourished between the 1960s and 1970s, with massive yet minimal villas and condos erected. Sounio is one of the most expensive areas in Greece, with the value of some homes exceeding twenty million euros .The bay at Akra Sounio can be a useful stop to wait out a meltemi and to visit the temple of Poseidon which is clearly visible on the Cape from a distance and is easily reached after a short walk up the hill.Moor in 5m in the NW corner just below a small chapel where the bottom is sandy. Take care as a lot of the bay is weed with poor holding. Make sure the anchor is well dug in as the bay is subject to severe gusts and dragging is common. Beware of some unmarked rocks on the eastern side. The best time to visit the temple is in the early morning, before the day-trippers arrive. The Saronic Gulf or Gulf of Aegina forms part of the Aegean Sea and defines the eastern side of the isthmus of Corinth

GREECE: EXPLORING the historic TEMPLE OF POSEIDON (at CAPE SOUNION, 5th century BC) ????️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's review the history of this magnificent Greek temple built the 5th century before Christ and located 60 kilometers outside Athens.
The temple of Poseidon at Sounion was constructed in 444–440 BC. This was during the ascendancy of the Athenian statesman Pericles, who also rebuilt the Parthenon in Athens. It was built on the ruins of a temple dating from the Archaic period. It is perched above the sea at a height of almost 60 metres (200 ft). The design of the temple is a typical hexastyle, i.e., it had a front portico with six columns. Only some columns of the Sounion temple stand today, but when intact it would have closely resembled the contemporary and well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus beneath the Acropolis, which may have been designed by the same architect.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

Winter Destination: The Easiest Way to CRUISE in GREECE, Day tour at HYDRA, POROS & AEGINA
While we were in Athens, Ruth and I decided to book an island tour cruise via Klook.
Since Mykonos and Santorini are not recommended destinations during Winter, we thought of visiting the other Greek Islands like Aegina, Poros, and Hydra which is considered one of the most beautiful islands in Greece.
We were delighted when we learned that they are open on January 2nd (for some were still on a holiday break).
In this vlog, we will give you a peek on what it is like to do a day tour in these Saronic Islands.

Dipping Feet in the Aegean Sea in Sounion (Temple of Poseidon, Greece)
On our first day of landing into Athens, we drove directly down to Cape Souion to see the Temple of Poseidon! The area and views are beyond amazing! It was an interesting 40-50 mile drive from Athens (You'll see! lol) and very worth it!! The houses are very expensive in this part of Greece and it's a hidden paradise on the Aegean sea.
Cape Sounion (Modern Greek: Aκρωτήριο Σούνιο, transliterated Akrotírio Soúnio, pronounced [akroˈtirʝo ˈsuɲo]; Ancient Greek: Ἄκρον Σούνιον, Άkron Soúnion; Venetian: Capo Colonne, Cape of Columns) is a promontory located 69 kilometres (43 mi) south-southeast of Athens, at the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula in Greece.
Cape Sounion is noted as the site of ruins of an ancient Greek temple of Poseidon, the god of the sea in classical mythology. The remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea. The ruins bear the deeply engraved name of English Romantic poet Lord Byron (1788–1823).
