Top 10 Japanese Street Food Tour in Kyoto Japan. Food Guide in Nishiki Market and Gion Area, walking street food tour to my top 10 favorite street food spots. Nishiki Market is known as Kyoto’s kitchen and it’s been around for 400 years. And one of the main reasons why Nishiki Market opened up here in Kyoto is because this very spot run clean and cold groundwater which was used a refrigeration system by shop owners back in the day. Now there about 129 stores crammed in this narrow 400 meter market and it’s equally crowded with locals and tourists alike. Many Japan tourists and Japan travelers are looking for the best food market spots at Nishki and I cover some of the best shops We try the famous Tako Tamago which is an Octopus with a quail egg inside. We also try Tamagoyaki at Kai, which is a fluffy and elegant tasting Dashimaki Tamago made only with their High-end Kyoto eggs. Dashimaki Tamago is a type of Tamagoyaki but uses a Dashi soup and is usually not sweet. Also on the menu for this Kyoto Street Food tour are Oysters, Fishcakes, Grilled Fish, Cheese Tart, Fried Chicken Karaage, Black Ramen and Melon Pan Ice Cream.

Nishiki Market (錦市場 Nishiki Ichiba) (literally brocade market) is a marketplace in downtown Kyoto, located on a road one block north and parallel to Shijō Street (四条通 Shijō-dōri) and west of Teramachi Street (寺町通 Teramachi-dōri). Rich with history and tradition, the market is renowned as the place to obtain many of Kyoto's famous foods and goods.
Gion is Kyoto’s geisha district, with hostesses in colorful kimonos often sighted on the wooden Tatsumi Bridge, or amid upscale Japanese restaurants and boutiques on Hanamikoji Street.

Two-block long Teramachi Street is a covered arcade that is filled with small shops, an occasional temple, restaurants and a great place to walk anytime but particularly on a rainy day. There's always something happening on Teramachi.

These two covered shopping arcades are the most popular shopping streets in all of Kyoto, and they’re often crammed with kids out on school excursions.
Right in the middle of downtown Kyoto, these two streets form the heart of Kyoto’s main shopping district. The eastern street, known as Shinkyogoku, is filled with tacky souvenirs of almost every description – need a shirt reading “Ichi-ban” (Number One)? This is the place to go.
The western street, known as Teramachi, is an altogether more refined place, with a variety of art galleries, bookshops, and clothing shops. In addition, you’ll find several shops selling religious goods like incense, Buddha images, prayer beads and the like. These shops are a holdover from the 16th century, when the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi moved many of the city’s temples to Teramachi Street in an effort to control the clergy (the name of the street, Teramachi, literally means “temple town.”
Nishiki Market branches off Teramachi about 100 meters north of Shijo Street and an exploration of the two market streets, perhaps combined with a trip to one of the nearby department store food floors, is a great way to spend a rainy day in Kyoto.

The street's name means Temple Town, similar to English Templeton, and reflects the large number of temples moved there during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's remodeling of Kyoto in the 16th century.

Nishiki Market in Kyoto - Exploring Japan with Wageofsins
Today we take a walk through Nishiki Market (錦市場), a strip of lane ways packed to the gills with traditional Japanese foods and snacks, fresh seafood, Kyoto specialties and other odds and ends. It is located one block north and parallel to Shijō Street (四条通) and west of Teramachi Street (寺町通). It also holds one of the longest running knife shops in Japan, named Aritsugu, which was founded in 1560.
At the top of the market you'll find a series of more modern shops going the opposite direction, as well as a surprisingly peaceful shrine for such a busy area.
Although usually packed with tourists and locals alike, Nishiki Market is a great experience for anyone visiting Kyoto.

If you want to visit Nishiki Ichiba, here's how to get there:
1) Take exit #9 from Hankyu Kawaramachi Station.
2) You will exit out onto a shopping street called Shinkyogoku. This shopping street runs parallel to another shopping street called Teramachi.
3) Walk along the sidewalk path perpendicular past the entrance of Shinkyogoku. You will soon see the entrance to Teramachi shopping street on your right.
4) Enter the shopping street and continue on until you see a Wendy's First Kitchen on your right and a shoe store called ABC Mart on your left.
5) Right behind the ABC Mart is a road that runs from left to right. Take a left onto that road and you will be at Nishiki Ichiba Market. You can tell by seeing the stained glass ceiling above.
Shops at Nishiki Ichiba open from 10 AM to 6 PM. I HIGHLY recommend getting there as early as possible, because the shopping street will soon be crowded all day. At peak traffic, it's very difficult to walk through.

Teramachi and Shinkyogoku - 寺町と新京極
This shopping district's mix of commerce and contemplation is a legacy of the devastation that visited Kyoto during Japan's Sengoku (Warring States) Period. In the wake of the violent era, the ruling warlord of a mostly-united Japan, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ordered the reconstruction of Kyoto in 1591. In the process, several temples were relocated to the residential street of Higashikyogoku-oji, which was renamed Teramachi-dori, or Temple Town Street.
Shops that catered to temple-goers, selling items such as prayer beads and incense, sprung up amidst the temples. In 1872, a new shopping street parallel to, and one block east of Teramachi, was created and named Shinkyogoku. It became home to many live theaters, which transitioned into movie houses in the 20th Century, though today only one cinema can be found in the district.
However, you can still buy prayer beads -- as well as clothes, household items, and restaurant fare -- among the many shops of the Teramachi and Shinkyogoku shopping arcades. You can also drop some Yen at the temples or the Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine that still stand among the shops, in a purchase of a talisman or as an offering accompanied by a prayer.
In the final part of the video, clockwork-like machinery and human effort work in tandem to produce castella, Japanese sponge cake, at Rondon-ya (ロンドンヤ ), a shop in Shinkyogoku.

Hey guys! Another week, another video. This part is all about KYOTO! My friends and I spent two days in Kyoto and honestly I feel like it is too short and I was loving Kyoto a little bit more than Osaka. Despite having to travel mainly by buses (unlike Osaka and Tokyo), all the traditional buildings and houses are just so beautiful!
We get to eat quite a bit here, but there are a lot more I would love to try. There have lots of underground bars that looked really cool and interesting and I would love to give it a go the next visit.
