Thank You America Memorial in Plzen, CR
My Grandfather fought in WW2 in then Czechoslovakia. The American forces didn't get further than Plzen, Czech Republic in WW2. American forces liberated the city from Nazi Germany on May 6, 1945. It's funny how (most likely) my Grandpa was fighting in the very city I am now able to enjoy and visit... Full circle.
CZECHOSLOVAKIA: US VETERANS RETURN TO PILSEN
English/Nat
Hundreds of American veterans have returned to the Czech city of Pilsen, which they liberated from the Germans half a century ago.
Czechs paid tribute to the old soldiers by putting on American G-I uniforms and staging a recreation of General Patton's triumphant entry into Pilsen.
A memorial called Thank You America was unveiled at a rally addressed by America's Czech-born U-N Ambassador Madeleine Albright.
Hundreds of vintage jeeps, armoured vehicles and trucks descended on Pilsen.
Czechs wearing U-S army uniforms were recreating the day when Germans were driven out of the city half a century ago.
They were honouring over three-hundred American veterans who returned to Pilsen on Saturday.
Earlier the Czech born U-S Ambassador to the United Nations, Madeleine Albright, opened a new memorial simply entitled Thank You America in recognition of the U-S liberation of Pilsen.
The American veterans listened to her with pride, among them 69 year old William L. Johnson from New York City.
SOUNDBITE:
This is the day I've been looking for fifty years, and I didn't know it.

The marching continued, with the Band of the United States Fifth Corps calling the tune.
Children also posed in uniform in honour of the victory that brought their city freedom from the Nazis.
It was a proud moment too for Madeleine Albright, who was almost overwhelmed by the warmth of the welcome.
SOUNDBITE:
I think this is one of the most outstanding events that I've ever participated in because it symbolizes so much about the love of the Czechs for the Americans and the American dedication to freedom and liberty and it kind of is all there and the warmth of the crowds are just stunning and it's terrific to be able to be here. I cannot tell you how moving it is for me to be here.

Pilsen's new memorial to American heroism now stands proudly in the centre of the city.
The Czech Premier Vaclav Klaus says it symbolizes a deep friendship between two people:
SOUNDBITE:
Well, it's a very important day for all of us. And as you know we now have time to look back and to reinterpret how important it was for all of us. And I am very happy that thousands and thousands of people from Pilsen came because it is almost unexpected for me so I think the spirit from the people is very good and we are very happy.

Also present at Saturday's celebrations was George S. Patton IV, whose father led American troops to victory in Pilsen.
SOUNDBITE:
My emotion today is that I hope the American people are as grateful for the service performed in World War II for the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps as these people are.

Fifty years on from the end of the war in Europe, Czechs and Americans have taken another step closer in their long friendship.

On May 6th, 1945, General Patton and pals liberated about 10% of Czechoslovakia, on the Western side, including the largest city Pilsen. 70 years later, the city organized a bigger liberation fest than the average ones. Some atmosphere from the vicinity of the central Square of the Republic after the noon on May 2nd, 2015 is captured in the video. Web of the festival:
6. května 1945 osvobodila vojska generála Pattona a dalších spojenců asi 10 nejzápadnějších procent Československa včetně západočeské metropole Plzně. K 70. výročí události zorganizovala plzeňská radnice a různé organizace větší oslavy, než je obvyklé. Video zachycuje atmosféru v okolí náměstí republiky po poledni v sobotu 2. května 2015. Each year Pilsen in the Czech Republic holds a celebration to thank our World War II veterans for liberating their city in 1945. But there are fewer and fewer of those veterans around to receive the praise.
Liberation of Domazlice, Czechoslovakia
Matt Konop is greeted with banners in Czech reading Liberated By One of Our Own as he enters the main square of Domazlice. Word had spread that an American officer with roots to the region had returned to bring freedom. The experience also freed Konop of his unease of his Czech background. Although he was born in America, his first language was Czech, the only language spoken on the farm in rural Wisconsin. Bringing freedom at the end of World War Two to the lands of his grandparents, Konop's conception of his own identity is transformed -- The Accidental Hero.
