The 309 Road in the Coromandel – New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 7: Today, we take the 309 Road in the Coromandel seeing Waiau Falls and arriving in Whitianga for some classic New Zealand fish and chips!
Yesterday - Day 6 -
Tomorrow – Day 8 –
About this video:
It’s Day 7 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year and a whole week since we started our challenge of 365 activities in 365 days in New Zealand. Today’s activity is a road trip on The 309 Road in the Coromandel. Along the way, we stop off at Waiau Falls, a stunning waterfall just off the side of the 309 Road among beautiful forest scenery. The trip takes us on a winding gravel road through the stunning valleys as we travel from the west coast of the Coromandel to the east coast.
We arrive in the Coromandel town of Whitianga where we treat ourselves to a classic New Zealand meal: fish and chips! We take them down to the Whitianga waterfront, but little do we know that we are being followed... Someone, or something, is after our fish and chips!
After the fish and chips incident, we check out the relaxing Whitianga Beach for a taste of coastal life on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Rainforest Experience, The 309 Road, Coromandel NZ, 10 Apr 2010
Feeling adventurous, I decided to take the back road across the Coromandel Peninsula.
Having a convertible meant I could appreciate the lush temperate rainforest and birdsong of the Coromandel Ranges.
It also meant I'd look silly every time a psycho local passed me in a 4X4, and that the car interior would remain dusty for eternity...

The 309 Road across Coromandel Peninsula and Port Jackson Road heading to Fletchers Bay.
At 8 minutes an Africa Twin rider unfortunately goes into a ditch on the Port Jackson Road and has to be hauled out.
I caught heaps of nice footage but most of it had no other bikes in it, just scenery.

The Coolest Town In NEW ZEALAND | Whitianga | Coromandel Peninsula
Whitianga or Whiti City as the locals call it is the gateway to our favourite beach in New Zealand.
Cathedral Cove is a must visit while you are on the coromandel peninsula. Just down the road from Cathedral Cove you will also find another attraction the Coromandel is famous for and that is Hot Water Beach or Hottie as the locals would say.
Whitianga is also home to The Lost Spring which is our favourite Natural Spring in NZ, anyway check out the video and comment below if you have any questions and more importantly go and check out Whitianaga and the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula.
