Glaumbær turf farm in Iceland open-air museum - aerial drone video
Driving Iceland ring road in the direction of Akureyri, in the village of Varmahlíð, you should take the road 75 leading among other things to the museum Glaumbaer (Glaumbær). Skansen was founded as the first on the island, in 1947, the farm was given the status of a protected object and is now under the auspices of the National Museum of Iceland. Since 1952 the farm can be visited. Ideally it shows what life was like Icelanders in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The creation of the farm dates back roughly 874 years, that is since the first settlers, and, peat buildings economic and residential located on the holding arose gradually in the 18th and 19th centuries. The settlers built it mostly with the use of peat, due to limited access to wood material. Buildings performed with thin layers of wood, insulated with thick peat walls. The whole look fit thanks to the Icelandic grass that grows very densely, creating a strong and durable connection of roots and soil.
These types of structures are characterized by relatively short service life in areas with heavy rain - for decades, the situation changes dramatically when the rainfall is relatively low, then the building will last up to 100 years if not more. The slope of the roof, in this case played a significant role. If the roof was too steep, grass did not stop the water and did not grow, contributing to crack turf, and the appearance of holes in the roof. In contrast, when the roof was too flat, the water leaked into the house. Practically it was possible to build large structures ensuring an adequate angle of the roof, hence the division into a number of smaller buildings connected by a corridor. In the case of farms in Glaubaer corridor measures 21 meters and provides access to the 9 houses. Other houses in the complex are mostly business premises access to which settlers were from the outside.
Currently, the museum Glaumbaer consists of several buildings peat and two wooden houses:
Gilsstofa, where you will find the museum offices and a gift shop. His example you can see how they looked salons because this has just been added to the peat houses before the end of the nineteenth century began to build houses out of wood.
Áshús, built in the years 1883 - 1886, adopted today as a café and exhibitions gospodyniach the first decade of the twentieth century.

Akureyri, Iceland 2019
Just spent an afternoon walking around the lovely town of Akureyri, Iceland
Akureyri - Capital of the north Iceland - city drone flight
Akureyri town situated on a peninsula Trollaskag, also called Capital of north Iceland, located between picturesque fjords Skagafjordur and Eyjafjörður. It is the second largest metropolitan area in Iceland, in terms of the number of quarters.
Although it is inhabited by about eighteen thousand people, it is considered the cultural capital of the northern regions of Iceland. The city is surrounded by spectacular granite mountains, reaching up to 1500 m height above sea level, The settlement was founded Helgi Magri (Helgi Skinny), who settled here with his wife in the 890 year. Although Akureyri as station trade was mentioned already in 1602, city rights settlement gained more than 200 years later, ie. In 1862. The name of the city was established by combining two Icelandic words: Akur (field) and Eyrie (spit).
Akureyri is an important communications center, houses the national airport and port, which provides 30% of the catches of fish on the island. This city is also the largest brewery in Iceland and the second largest hospital on the island. In 1978. He was appointed to the university by giving young people from the area of education and the opportunity to stay in the region. One of the directions is the Law of Polar as in the days of the struggle for influence in the Arctic is of interest to prospective students.
Akureyri is also the center of trade and service. This elegant and cosmopolitan place in the summer draws many tourists and Icelanders.
An interesting fact in Akureyri are red lights in the shape of hearts. This modification came in 2008 as a result of the banking crisis the Icelandic krona fell by half and the banks have announced bankruptcy, people lost their jobs saving etc. Reich kids from Akureyri worried the situation asked for the help of teachers, as a consequence of the idea that everywhere in place of the heart. So that adults could see that love is more important than money .
Most attractions are located in the center. Noteworthy is dominant over the city, situated on a hill church Akureyrarkirkja 1940., Which rises on the street Eyrarlandsvegur. Temple like Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik - designed by Icelandic architect Gudjon Samuelsson. Near the church is located Sigurgaedir building, which houses a museum dedicated to Matthias Jochumssonowi. This eminent writer became famous primarily as the creator of the Icelandic national anthem, also he translated the works of Shakespeare and Byron.
The great attraction is the botanical garden Lystigarðurinn, founded in 1912. Since then he has been three times enlarged, now it covers an area of about 3.6 ha area. Cultivation of exotic species is possible thanks to a specific microclimate, which prevails in the city. The garden is a great place for a walk. There are benches, pond and fountain, and the whole set is completed sculpture surrounded by greenery.
The main cultural center and conference town is Hof. Here are held numerous exhibitions, artistic presentations and fashion shows.

Welcome to Northern Iceland! In this vlog, we embark on a day trip adventure with Air Iceland Connect to see the otherworldly volcanic landscapes and waterfalls in Iceland's northern region.
This tour is for nature lovers and is best to explore during summer. We fly from Reykjavik to Akureyri, a 45-minute flight. We take a full day 10 hour guided tour that includes transportation. Our first stop is the stunning waterfall of Goðafoss.
We travel to Lake Myvatn´s unique nature and pseudo-craters, followed by the Dimmuborgir lava labyrinth. One of the top sights is bubbling Hverarond (aka Hverir), a geothermal area noted for its bubbling pools of mud & steaming fumaroles emitting sulfuric gas. The desolate landscape looks like mars.
Next, we reach one of the main highlights - Dettifoss which is Europe´s most powerful waterfall featured in the movie Prometheus. Next, we visit the volcanic wonderlands of Vatnajokull National Park, Jokulsargljufur canyon, Hljodaklettar (Echo cliffs), Asbyrgi a horse-shoe-shaped cliff formation. Árbær Open Air Museum Reykjavik
After our stay in Reykjavik we visited the Árbær Open Air Museum Reykjavik. The museum is just outside the city center. It's worth a visit. The old houses are very lovingly designed and offer interesting insights into the life of the last hundred years in Iceland.
