COST OF LIVING IN ANTIGUA GUATEMALA (2019) | VISA EXTENSION | BANKING | ANTIGUA | GUATEMALA | EP. 54
In August, I stayed in Antigua, Guatemala for a month to continue learning Spanish. Antigua is a popular tourist area but it's not that touristy as I thought. However, cost of living is relatively expensive. That's from my own experience and comments from locals.
As usual, I will share my cost of living in different categories along with some local scenes. This August happened to rain a lot in the afternoon (not much rain in the previous 2 months which is weird). When It rains, the streets become a river. So, when the rain stopped, I ran to the closest supermarket to shock up for a few days.
There are a lot of restaurants in Antigua. They are not extremely expensive, just a little pricey. For cheap eats, there are many fast food shops, local or international. Pollo Campero is the Guatemala KFC.
Antigua is very close to Acatenango and Pacaya Volcano. There is no way you can ignore them. It's much safer and easier to join a tour.
It's not difficult to access to Antigua, only 1 hr by uber, if you are lucky. Locals also like to go there on the weekend.
Many foreigners like to retire in Antigua and they are mostly not living in central. Therefore, money that they need to spend will be less.

Our Trip to Antigua, Guatemala (Lake Atitlán, Pacaya Volcano, & More!)
I recently went on a trip to Antigua, Guatemala with my boyfriend Will Hagle and had so much fun! This is my video diary of what we experienced there from a day trip to Lake Atitlán to hiking the Pacaya Volcano to exploring an avocado farm. I would definitely recommend traveling here – it's such a unique, charming place.
I arranged most of our excursions through The Three Monkeys Hostel ( where we stayed.

ACATENANGO VOLCANO HIKE in Antigua GUATEMALA with OX Expeditions
In 2018, Acatenango Volcano in Antigua, Guatemala killed hundreds of people.
Today, we're doing the Acatenango volcano hike to see it ourselves.
I'm not sure I accurately captured how insanely difficult this hike was. I quit at least 4-5 times on the way up. For the first hour or two, you are on a constant hike up in sand deeper than your ankles carrying a pack that's 30-40 pounds.
When I say (many times) that it was the most physically challenging thing I've ever done, I mean it.
But it's worth it. If you do this hike and decide, like me, that you want to quit, I hope you also do what I did and continue.
As you'll see in this video, you're going to be treated to some of the most incredible sights you'll ever see.
Oh, and forget about sleeping. Volcan Acatenango will keep you awake all night! ????
Want to do the Volcan Acatenango Guatemala hike yourself? You can get it cheaper with other companies, but I highly suggest you do it with OX Expeditions. The equipment they provide is excellent, the guides are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful, and the food is great!
This experience is definitely one of the best things to do in Antigua, Guatemala!

On the first day in Guatemala we stayed the entire day at the hotel and ate traditional and gourmet maya Guatemalan food! To start we visited the Market restaurant there we tried Kak Ik soup and we also tried a flank steak with white cheese and black bean mash.
I hit up the spa for an amazing Cacao massage which was amazing! It felt like I was being covered with Nutella and then cooked! Such a great experience which I highly recommend!
For dinner we visited their Picasso restaurant and the chef prepared for us a food and drink pairing. These dishes were more gourmet maya Guatemalan food. My favorite was the tuna with avocado with smoke! It was unreal!
Big thanks to my friends at the Real Intercontinental Guatemala:

Antigua Guatemala - Quoi faire à Antigua? ????????

Chupa Chupa (AKA South American Sapote) in Guatemala
Chupa Chupa is a rare fruit that is not found often in the US. Today at the market in Panajachel, Guatemala, I found some! I cut one open and try it for you.
Here's more about the chupa chupa:
Quararibea cordata (South American sapote, Chupa-chupa; syn. Matisia cordata Humb. & Bonpl.) is a large, semi-deciduous, fruit tree (up to 45m in height), native to Amazon Rainforest vegetation in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It bears orange-yellow fruit which are soft, juicy, sweet and contain 2-5 seeds. Fruit is usually eaten out of hand, though it may be juiced.[1]
Although generally popular, fruit quality is variable, with some trees producing insipid or fibrous fruits and little work has been done in establishing preferred cultivars. It grows best in wet, deep soils, but can be killed by floods.
