Dangerous Mushroom Hot Pot (13 Varieties of Mushrooms) in Dali, China.
Topping a truly epic day of eating Chinese food in the province of Dali, this is 'Song Rong,' a hot pot featuring multiple species of poisonous mushrooms.
Our friends assured us of 2 things today -
The first, that several people in their town go to the hospital each month due to mushroom poisoning.
The second, that they were all VERY excited and hungry to take us to eat this favorite local food!
I didn't know to be scared (I was definitely excited), or to be even more hungry, but I definitely couldn't wait to taste these infamous and crazily colorful mushrooms.
This is part 3 of a huge day of eating in Wei Shan town, near Dali, in Yunnan, Southern China.
Thanks to Cao Jiang and Zhu Li for taking us around, for being such great and friendly hosts, and thank YOU for joining me in this video of our meal experience this day.
Yunnan, China is one of the most diverse places in our entire world, and if you have the chance to visit for yourself, I know you won't forget it!
Cheers! Have a great day everyone! Much love

Discovering ‘Old Town’ in LiJiang, China - with @caitofalltraits
A friend’s destination wedding took me to LiJiang, China, and it was one of the most breathtaking places I’d ever visited. And of course... I discovered Lijiang Street food specialties, which includes some unconventional animals and a new way of eating cheese! DELICIOUS!!
We stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel which was a marvelous place, partly because one of the town’s main attractions, ‘GuCheng’ or ‘Old Town’ is situated in its back-yard, accessible in minutes by foot.
Needless to say, we went back each of the 3 days that we were there, to take in the sights and sounds, follow the trail to the legendary ‘Black Dragon Pool’, and buy souvenirs unique to YUNAN and LiJiang, that we discovered only by being at the mountain town, 2400ft above sea-level.
Don’t miss the snippets of the stunning wedding of Chervin and Krystal Chow-Tan, Founders of @bluesky.escapes who expertly put together this fantastic experience for their guests.
What a magical trip this has been.

Rooster ritual in Dali, Yunnan, China
One of the reasons the rooster is included in the Chinese zodiac is because of its close ties to the lives of the people. China is one of the earliest nations in the world to domesticate chickens.
According to folk legend, ancient Chinese were grateful for the rooster's punctual crowing every morning, which let them know what time it was, and therefore begged the Jade Emperor, the ruler of Heaven, to honor the creature by enlisting it along with other animals that were important to human kind, such as the horse and the pig.
The rooster (公鸡) crows at the dawn, the start of a new day. As such the rooster is also seen as a symbol of light, which has led it being used in many ways to ward off evil spirits. For instance, people put up rooster paintings on their doors to boost good luck and ward off bad luck and evil spirits. If a house is believed to be haunted, rooster blood is sprinkled around the building. Even today in some places in Central China's Henan Province, some people kill roosters to scare off evil spirits on the first day of the 10th month of the lunar calendar.
In the southern part of Southwest China's Yunnan Province, people use roosters, hens or eggs in fortune-telling and other ritual practices. According to tradition, eggs are rubbed over a sick person's body in order to absorb the evil spirits causing the disease. Then the egg is boiled and handed to a shaman, who examines the egg looking for good or bad signs.
The rooster is also regarded as a symbol of good fortune, because the word for chicken in Chinese, ji, has a similar pronunciation to the word meaning auspicious. For this reason, in some places in East China's Shandong Province, hens are used as part of wedding ceremonies. The bride's family will choose a boy to carry a hen in his arms and accompany the bride as she walks to the groom's side, here the chicken represents that the bride is an auspicious woman.

Among the Bai minority people who live around Dali, Yunnan Province, there is a popular custom of “giving rooster-rice gifts,” divided io two forms of single and double gifts. The single version includes a jug of wine and a fat rooster, and the double a jug of rice wine, a jug of seed grain and two fat birds. Such gifts are exchanged by close relatives on big occasions, such as weddings, the birth of a baby or completion of a new home.
