Savannah's First School for Blacks
The Scarbrough House was built in 1819, and by the 1870s, it became the first public school for blacks in Savannah. It was called the West Broad Street School.
The house was purchased and deeded as a school for “persons of African American descent” by George DeRenne. John Wesley Dobbs, the grandfather of Maynard Jackson, the former mayor of Atlanta, attended school in the building when his mother lived in Savannah.
The Scarbrough House is now home to the Ships of the Sea Museum.

During his time at West Point, Hughes developed an innovative seminar course “Leading Professional Teams: The Human Dimenson of Leadership” that he taught at the Sloan Graduate School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Michael retired from active duty in 1999 as a lieutenant colonel and was awarded the Legion of Merit for his contributions to the Army and West Point. During his military career, Michael spent time at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield during exercises and developed an appreciation and love for the Savannah area. As an educator and leader, Michael has a passion for helping to develop programs and initiatives that transform boys into young men of high character who are prepared to succeed in college, careers and life. Michael and his wife, Donna, say coming to Savannah and Bethesda “feels like coming home.
Bethesda President Launches Character Development Program
(SAVANNAH, GA) Bethesda Academy launches of a new Character Development Program intended to strengthen the institution’s mission to educate and provide positive guidance to young men in grades six through 12.
It is being introduced into the school curriculum and extra-curricular activities this spring and will be fully integrated in the fall.
Bethesda President Michael Hughes says the academy will integrate the new Character Development Program with its existing leadership program with the goal of becoming a leadership academy.
Hughes said he also hopes to leverage the academy’s relationships with the Savannah area business community to increase internships and summer job opportunities, as well as job programs for college-bound graduates.
“My goal is to transform these boys into young men of high character,” Hughes said. “We must prepare them to succeed in college, careers and life by helping them reach their full potential through academic, extracurricular, co-curricular and character development programs.”
The character development program is built on Bethesda Academy’s Code of Conduct, which focuses on honor, respect and consideration of others. The school has 36 boys on campus with another 120 day-school students.
“In other Savannah area schools, only 47 percent of all boys graduate on time,” Hughes said. “In our 2016 graduating class of 20 seniors, 19 went on to college, and one entered the Marine Corps. This year, 22 Bethesda students are expected to graduate and at least two will be offered full college scholarships.”

Agrohack 2016: Nate Olive - Fixing Paradise
During his presentation at the 2016 Agrohack Conference, Nate Olive discusses the five ways to Implement Sustainable Food-shed Development for Small Farm Communities.
Nate Olive, Ph.D., is a farmer and consultant who owns and directs the only certified organic farm in the United States Virgin Islands, Ridge to Reef Farm (R2R). The farm is located on 180 acres of the mountainous Northwest quarter of St. Croix. It grows USDA certified organic fruits & vegetables and pasture-raised sheep and pigs.
Products are made available to multiple outlets on the three USVI islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John forty-two weeks a year. Primary markets include the territory’s Farm to School initiative and a 100-member Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA). R2R also serves as a food hub for other sustainable farms in its VI Locally Grown market place. The farm also hosts hundreds of visitors a year in its agri-tourism programs, including farm stays, tours, and on-farm guest chef dinners.
AGROHACK is a premier agriculture innovation summit whose purpose is to propel agriculture as a sustainable source of growth and economic development.

Our Underwater Heritage - “A Mobile Mystery: The History and Archaeology of the Corolla Wreck”
This program was originally broadcast on November 4, 2015.
This program, entitled, “A Mobile Mystery: The History and Archaeology of the Corolla Wreck” is presented by Daniel Brown, Maritime Archaeologist with the South Carolina Institute for Archaeology and Anthropology.
Mr. Brown’s lecture focuses on the “Corolla Wreck”, a beached shipwreck that first washed ashore in 2010 and is believed to be one of the oldest shipwrecks ever discovered in North Carolina waters. Brown’s presentation outlines both the discovery of the wreck and the archaeological investigation of this important piece of maritime heritage.
The analysis of wreck site 0022CKB, popularly known as the “Corolla Wreck”, presented an opportunity to study early 17th century wooden ship remains in the context of early European settlement of Atlantic North America. Over a period of two years, numerous research questions stemming from archaeological and historical observations sought to answer whether the extant remains of the Corolla Wreck could offer conclusions as to the shipwreck’s identity and origins when compared to contemporary wreck sites. Historical research also provides possible answers as to the origin and purpose of this wreck, and what part it may have played in Atlantic commerce and colonization. Research regarding the archaeological site formation processes of this wreck site could serve as a model for the future study of beached wrecks on the Outer Banks.

HorsesofCB
Here is a quick update on the situation with the horse at Carlbrook. Many of you know the boarding school that hosted a therapeutic riding program is shutting down with very little notice and in addition to my losing my paycheck, the financial responsibility of the horses has fallen on our personal farm. I will try my best to start posting videos, updates and more on our facebook page ( Facebook.com/wildwoodhorses ). We have launched a gofundme account to help with the horses winter expenses until homes can be found. Ideally we would like to be able to keep them with us until their training is finished and find them homes in the Spring when feed/upkeep costs drop and many people start looking for horses to be their forever, lifetime partners. We are currently asking rehoming fees for the horses but if homes are not found, we will start looking at FTGH options to approved owners before it ever gets to the point that the horses are placed in jeopardy. Their continues health, safety and comfort are priority in this situation, whatever comes next. Thank you for your support! We will get through this!
