Cardiff Morris dance Black Joke at the Black Cock Inn, Caerphilly. 8th May 2012.
Cardiff Morris here dance the Black Joke at the Black Cock Inn.
'Black Jokes' is obscure English slang and can be traced back to at least 1730 when it was the title of a bawdy song sung around London. William Hogarth referenced the song in his 'Tavern Scene' engraving for 'A Rake's Progress'. On the far-right of the picture you can see a ragged ballad singer standing in the doorway, in her hand she carries a flier advertising 'Black Joke'.
Howevere the other inhabitants of the scene seem to be distracted.

Section 17: Dally Castle to Yarrowmoor
We begin this section by visiting Dally Castle, a ruined tower house that is Northumberland’s oldest ruin of a hall house. Crossing the North Tyne and Tarset rivers, we next visit the ruins of Tarset Castle that once guarded fords crossing both rivers. Sadly both castles were robbed for stone in the 19th century but ruins are still visible on the ground.
From Tarset Castle we pick up a country lane from Lanehead passing the old railway station of Thorneyburn and the old bastle now known as Oldhall Farm. Eventually we arrive at the old pele tower at Donkley Woods. Leaving the ruined pele tower we manage to do a bit of foraging for bilberries and raspberries before reaching the Black Cock Inn in Falstone.
After slaking our thirst from the Black Cock we made our way to Kielder Dam where we finish this section.
To be continued...

Dawn Rising Dead Horse Morris Whitstable
It is traditional for most Morris groups in Britain to rise before the dawn on May morning to welcome the Summer. Sometimes this welcome includes a 'Jack-in-the-Green', a dancer hidden from head to toe in greenery, ribbons and blossom from the 'may' hawthorn tree. He usually wears a floral crown.
Here, 'Dead Horse Morris' from Whitstable in Kent carry on the rites as the sun rises from the sea. There were clouds at the rising time of 5.27am, but after 20 minutes of dancing and singing the sun came out to dazzle us.
Welcome Summer!
