A goods shed is a railway building designed for storing goods before or after carriage in a train. A typical goods shed will have a track running through it to allow goods wagons to be unloaded under cover, although sometimes they were built alongside a track with possibly just a canopy over the door. There will also be a door to move goods to or from road wagons and vans, this sometimes is parallel to the rail track, or sometimes on the side opposite the rail track. Inside the shed will generally be a platform and sometimes a small crane to allow easier loading and unloading of wagons.
Some goods sheds had more than one track. If one were not adjacent to the unloading platform then the method of working the second siding would be to first empty the wagons adjacent to the platform, and then open the doors on their far side to access those on the second track. Planks or portable bridges were normally provided for this purpose.
When no longer required for goods traffic goods sheds have often been converted for other uses, such as the booking office at Paignton railway station, or as housing. When many rural branch lines in New Zealand were closed, goods sheds along the closed branches often formed integral parts of the depots of road freight companies that replaced the railway.
Transfer sheds, sometimes called transshipment sheds, were provided to transfer goods between two different railways of different gauges, such as the broad gauge and standard gauge on the Great Western Railway in the United Kingdom. Those at Exeter and Didcot are still intact.
The term can also be applied to a shed on a pier in a harbour where cargo is/was transferred from rail cars or trucks to ships and vice versa. The cargo was temporarily stored in the shed.

Odd Goings-On at Mount Maunganui (starring DL 9613)
On this occasion, DL 9613 is seen leaving Mount Maunganui with Train 365. This is the 2nd of two late-morning Mount Maunganui to Kawerau services; the first being 363.
Bizarrely the locomotive pulled up to the crossing and sat there for several minutes before leaving. The other strange part was that the alarms went off while the DL was stopped. Annoyingly I started recording the 1st piece of footage a little too late.

2011-10-06 - 3NEWS - RESPONSE TO RENA OIL LEAK ESCALATES
Officials are very, very worried about a stranded cargo ship spilling oil into the sea off the coast of Tauranga.
It's not yet known where it's coming from, but engineers are on board the Liberian-flagged vessel, Rena, checking for the source.
The 236-metre ship had its hull damaged when it hit Astrolabe Reef early on Wednesday morning and remains stuck fast.
An aerial survey on Friday will determine if the 5 kilometre-long oil slick has grown or changed direction.
A toxic oil dispersant has been sprayed in a bid to break the oil up, but the manager of Maritime New Zealand's (MNZ) pollution response service, Andrew Berry, says it didn't work and they will up the amount of dispersant used or look at other chemicals.
Clearly we'd prefer not to have to spray it, (but) compared to the greater evil of large quantities of heavy fuel oil it's, in our opinion, it's a considered risk worth taking, Mr Berry told Radio New Zealand.
MNZ will meet with the salvage company, Svitzer, to come up with a plan to get the 1700 tonnes of fuel off the ship before the weather deteriorates over the weekend.
The reef - about 4 nautical miles north of Motiti Island and 12 nautical miles off the coast - is home to animals including little blue penguins, seals and petrels and four oiled birds have already been found dead near the ship.
Earlier this year, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority detained the Rena for more than a day after it was found to have a number of deficiencies including a faulty hatchway, cargo not stowed or secured, and cracked and rusted parts.
Mr Berry says the latest incident doesn't seem to be linked to these problems, but investigations down the track will shed more light.
