Kutna Hora - A Journey Beyond the Bone Church.. Near Prague (Czech Republic)
Kutna Hora - Kutna Hora situated in the central Bohemian region of Bohemia and is 120 km away from central Prague. Kutna Hora is a UNESCO world heritage site so I was all the more excited to visit. The popular destinations to visit are The Church of the assumption of our Lady & Saint John the Baptist, the Sedlec Ossuary and The Church of Saint Barbara.
The town: It is a small town and not a lot of people speak English. It is a quiet town overall and you might see people driving old cars that can take you back to the 1990s. It was evident that the people are much happier and away from the hustle bustle of a city. On my way to the Cathedral, I was even lucky to witness the Kutna Hora fest. It made me feel as if the 90’s were alive, as there was less population, loud rock music was their favorite and vintage cars were at display. The glassware in Kutna Hora is one of the best in the country. If possible to carry then I would recommend ‘Borek Sipek Glass Dependance’ – the shop of the famous Borek Sipek who was a Czech artist and author of the President Havel at the Prague Castle.

Kutna Hora - Kostnice Ossuary (The Bone Church)
This trip I spent a day out in Bohemia in Kutna Hora, an old silver mining town outside of Prague. Kutna Hora is not a very touristy town. So, what is the Ossuary exactly? Its official name is the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and St. John the Baptist and is basically the basement of the church adorned with about 30k bones. Macabre to say the least! It was definitely interesting, and nothing that I would see anywhere else. But it was just weird.
The Bone Church—Sedlec Ossuary, Kutna Hora, Czechia
EPISODE 043: The one where I visit Kutna Hora and the Bone Church (Sedlec Ossuary), The Church of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist, and St. Barbara Church (the big one behind me in the video). Kutna Hora itself, the town, was super chill and definitely a place I would go back to for a few nights. This trip was just an hour from Prague via a $10 roundtrip train ticket, and this day only cost me about $30-35 total! If you ever get to Prague, make sure you make the trip to the Bone Church and Kutna Hora!

Bike Touring - Prague to Kutna Hora (+80km)
On the second Prague bike episode, we leave the capital and head east to Kutna Hora to visit the Gothic St. Barbara's Church with medieval frescoes and flying buttresses. Also notable is the Sedlec Ossuary, a chapel adorned with human skeletons. On the site of a former Cistercian monastery is the Gothic and baroque Cathedral of the Assumption.

This is a 80km ride, that takes 4-6 hours and is considered a level moderate.

The historic centre of town, along with two individual buildings
(St. Barbara's Cathedral and the Cathedral of the Assumption
in Sedlec), was declared a UNESCO World Heritage
Site in December 1995.
Beyond its rich history, the town offers a wide range of possibilities
for a pleasant visit.
Day 3 Part 2: Saint James Church/Assumption of our Lady and Saint John and Sedlec Ossuary
This is Day 3 Part 2. Make sure to watch the part 1 as we continue from Saint Barbara's towards Saint James Church.
Right behind Saint James Church, Kutna Hora is the Italian Court. We had no interest in visiting the place. You can see it briefly on the drone shot.
At the Assumption of our Lady and Saint John Baptist, you can climb up to the attic of the church. I recommend that you go with friends. I guarantee that you will get freaked out if you go alone. It was the case for me at least.
The Sedlec Ossuary can be a little traumatizing for young kids. We've talked to our daughter extensively and she claimed that she was prepared but she did get scared and decided to walk out. My son didn't care on the other hand.
I've mentioned this before, please make sure to have some cash with you. You wont' find too many stores in the town of Kutna Hora that will accept credit card.
St Barbara's Catholic Church Kutna Hora
Saint Barbara's Church (Czech: Chrám svaté Barbory) is a Roman Catholic church in Kutná Hora(Bohemia) in the style of a cathedral, and is sometimes referred to as the Cathedral of St Barbara (Czech: Katedrál sv. panny Barbory).[1] It is one of the most famous Gothic churches in central Europe and it is a UNESCO world heritage site. St Barbara is the patron saint of miners (among others), which was highly appropriate for a town whose wealth was based entirely upon its silver mines.

Construction began in 1388,[2] but because work on the church was interrupted several times, it was not completed until 1905. The first architect was probably Johann Parler, son of Peter Parler.[2]Work on the building was interrupted for more than 60 years during the Hussite Wars and when work resumed in 1481, Matěj Rejsek, Benedikt Rejt and Mikuláš Parler, assumed responsibility.[2]
The original design was for a much larger church, perhaps twice the size of the present building. Construction, however, depended on the prosperity of the town's silver mines, which became much less productive. So, in 1588, the three-peaked roof had been completed,[2] and a provisional wall was constructed. A little later it was occupied by Jesuits who gradually changed the structure into Baroque style, though parts still remain in Gothic style.[2]
The final process of repair and completion took place at the end of the 19th century, under architects J. Mocker and L. Labler.[2]
Originally there were eight radial chapels with trapezoidal interiors. Later on, the choir was constructed, supported by double-arched flying buttresses.
Internal points of note are the glass windows, altars, pulpits and choir stalls. Medieval frescoes depicting the secular life of the medieval mining town and religious themes have been partially preserved.

Kutna Hora
Kutná Hora, treasury of the Czech Kingdom
Kutná Hora, the city of silver, is deservedly attributed the other name national treasury. This is to say that its wealth helped to ensure the boom of the Czech Kingdom. The centre of the city was included in the UNESCO world heritage list in 1995 thanks to its historical importance and architectural gems. All of the streets, houses and churches exude a long history full of important events. The symbol of Kutná Hora is the unique late Gothic Cathedral of St. Barbara.
Kutna Hora 2016
This was one of the top sights we saw in the Czech Republic. Highlights included the Church of the Assumption, St. Barbara's Church, and the eponymous street. It beat the traditional turkey dinner I was supposed to be having that day.

Sedlec - Impressions of a Cistercian Church in Bohemia
In Sedlec, a village in the district of the Czech town Kutna Hora, you may find a true gem of Gothic architecture and a prime example of the simplicity of the Cistercian architecture that could do without any effects and exaggerated decorations: The former monastery church of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist.
The monastery in Sedlec was the first branch of the Cistercian monks on Bohemian soil. Via the monasteries Kamp on the Lower Rhine, Volkenroda and Waldsassen, it was a branch monastery of Morimond Abbey, one of the four direct daughter houses of Cîtaux Abbey.

Prague, Church of Bones at Kutna Hora Part 1
5/25 Saturday
Tour to Kutna Hora and the Cathedral of St. Barbara, The Ossuary and the Cathedral of The Assumption of Mary and John the Baptist. Again, we have a nice ride through the countryside, this time on the train. It's a little hectic to start, the station number is only announced ten minutes ahead of leaving. We get a little lost, then we're ok. The walk from the station to the town is a little raggedy, along a main street, not the touristy area, but interesting. We arrive first at the Cathedral of The Assumption, etc. It's one of the first cathedral-style buildings in eastern Europe. It's a lovely gothic cathedral. We pay extra for a walk up into the rafters, right under the red tile roof, into a gallery along the clerestory, with good views of the church organ and the altar. Then, we walk a block away to the Ossuary, or Bone Church. A lovely small church with a cemetery. A monk took some of the bones from the murdered monks of the original 12th century monastery, destroyed by the Hussites, and as he arranged them into 6 pyramids, he regained his sight. Now the church is decorated with as many as 40,000 bodies worth of bones, in elaborate chandeliers, altarpieces, piles, garlands, wreaths, covering nearly every surface in the church. It's quite a sight.
We walk through the town along a woodsy park to the great Cathedral of St. Barbara, majestically situated at a crest overlooking the surrounding fields. This is one of the finest examples of high gothic architecture in CZ. It's especially interesting because the walls and stained glass windows are decorated with works from various eras, the frescos and paintings are not a uniform style, but reflect the works done through the ages of the Cathedral's existence.
We stop in a garden café for a sandwich, and a regional favorite, Kofola, a jagermeister flavored soda. The city center is a UNESCO heritage site; it's a beautiful representation of the historic architecture.
Getting the train home is interesting, including my trademark fall-like-a tree onto the slippery cobblestones getting to the station (survived unscathed). We have open tickets for the train, as do several hundred other people, from the looks of it. We manage to get on, but for a while it seems that we will be stuck standing in a mosh pit of a ride for an hour, until at a second stop most riders depart and we find seats.
Back in our neighborhood, we explore a new block and find a stylish Greek restaurant, slightly above our typical price range, but still affordable and fun for us. We have sardines, lamb and rose retsina.
