Ayodhya, is one of the most holy cities in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Of all the Holy Places in Ayodhya, Hanuman Garhi is one that has made a place for itself not only in the minds of devotes but also among the major Tourist Attractions in Ayodhya.
According to popular legend, the place where the Hanuman Garhi now stands was inhabited by Hanuman. He used to live here to protect Janmabhoomi or Ramkot.
Hanuman Garhi is one of the most popular religious shrines in Ayodhya, India. Approachable by a flight of 76 steps, devout Hindus believe that all your wishes are sure to be fulfilled on a visit to this shrine. A statue of Mata Anjani with infant Hanuman in her lap is enshrined in the inner sanctum of this cave temple. It is believed that Hanuman resided here at one point of time to safeguard the place. And as of now it is the idol which is worshiped with a great deal of reverence.
Apart from its religious significance Hanuman Garhi is also well worth a visit because it is quite an impressive structure manifesting admirable architectural skills. Open from sunrise to sunset, it can be easily reached from any part of the city of Ayodhya. So do make sure to pay it a visit when on a sightseeing trip in Ayodhya.

Hanuman Garhi temple in Ayodhya, the city of Lord Rama
The Hindu temple of Garhi, dedicated to the monkey-god Hanuman, is nestled high in a citadel, a hundred steps leads us there. It is, along with Ramkot, the most venerated temple of Ayodhya and it is customary to visit this temple before that of Lord Rama.
The sanctuary was built by the Nawabs of Lucknow in the 10th century and even if you are not Hindu, the lively atmosphere and richly decorated architecture are truly worth a look.
It is said that Hanuman lived here in a cave and protected the fort of Ramkot from there. The divinity of the temple is a ‘shila’, a large decorated stone, surrounded by different statues including that of Hanuman’s mother.
The faithful come with laddoos (a very popular dessert in India) in order that Hanuman bless them. They believe that praying the monkey-god will grant them luck and prosperity.
Ayodhya, set on the banks of the Sarayu river, is a mythical city: it is said to have been the capital of the Kosala Kingdom, which saw the birth of Lord Rama, the famous hero of the Ramayana epic. As such, it is considered by Hindus as one of the seven most sacred cities of India (Sapta Puri). Like all pilgrimages places, the spiritual fervor is palpable there even if the city has been the centre of a religious conflict since two decades.

Sarayu is a river that flows through the Indian states of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. This river is of ancient significance, finding mentions in the Vedas and the Ramayana. The Sarayu forms at the confluence of the Karnali (or Ghaghara) and Mahakali (or Sharda) in Bahraich District. The Mahakali or Sharda forms the Indian-Nepalese border. Ayodhya is situated on the banks of river Sarayu. On Ram Navami, the festival that celebrates the birthday of Lord Rama, thousands of people take a dip in the Sarayu River at Ayodhya. According to Ramayana 1.5.6, the Sarayu flowed beside the ancient city of Ayodhya, which is in the modern day Uttar Pradesh. It was a tributary of the Gogra. This Sarayu played a vital role for the city and life of Ayodhya, and according to the great Sanskrit epic Ramayana, is where Rama, the seventh Avatar of Vishnu immersed himself to return to his eternal, real Mahavishnu form, when he retired from the throne of Kosala. His brothers Bharata and Shatrughna also joined him, as did many devoted followers. It is also called the only river flowing beneath the earth. In ancient times Aciravati was one of the tributaries of the Sarayu.

Famously known as 'Sone ka Mandir', Kanak Bhawan is one of the very famous temples in India. The temple got its name due to the richly decorated idols of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. The deities are seen wearing gold crowns and are decorated beautifully with gold jewellery. It is mesmerising as well as a blessing to see the divine duo in the golden throne bedecked with gold ornaments. According to Atharva Veda, Ayodhya is said to be a city built by gods and being as prosperous as paradise itself. According to Ramayan and hindu scripts, Kanak Bhawan was gifted by Kaikeyee to Goddess Sita after her marriage to Lord Rama. Kaikeyee was the step-mother of Lord Rama and was responsible for their exile to the forest. And according to the differnt sources, Rani Krishnabhanu Kunwari, the Queen of Tikamgarh, constructed the present temple in 1891. Kanak Bhawan is easily accessible by means of a rickshaw or a car from any point of Ayodhya. It is situated in Hanuman Garhi, a place frequented by tourists all round the year.
