Akureyri and Santa's House Iceland
Akureyri has approx. 16.000 inhabitants and is Iceland's second most important commercial and industrial center. As you drive through Akureyri’s colorful streets, it is almost like taking a journey through the different eras of Akureyri's history. We begin with a stop at the modern church whose wonderful stained glass windows are renowned. Stroll the pathways of the lovely Botanical Garden before continuing to the Nonni Museum. Here, you will find an exhibition commemorating the works of writer Pastor John Sveinsson whose children's books earned international acclaim in the 1930’s-1950’s. See the fishing boats in the busy harbor en route to Listagil Street. It is in this area, in the very heart of the town, that artisans keep their workshops and galleries. You will have time to browse for a short while before boarding your coach once more in order to drive outside of Akureyri's city limits. Santa’s House is your destination and while at this latitude it is tempting to believe that it could well be the real thing, this Santa's House is actually a charming Christmas store which is open for business all year round! This is a great opportunity to pick up some mementos of your trip to Iceland.
Akureyri is a town in northern Iceland. It is Iceland's second largest urban area (after the Capital Region) and fourth largest municipality (after Reykjavík, Hafnarfjörður, and Kópavogur).
Nicknamed the Capital of North Iceland, Akureyri is an important port and fishing centre. The area where Akureyri is located was settled in the 9th century but did not receive a municipal charter until 1786.The town was the site of Allied units during World War II. Further growth occurred after the war as the Icelandic population increasingly moved to urban areas.
The area has a relatively mild climate because of geographical factors, and the town's ice-free harbour has played a significant role in its history
Akureyri is located at 65°41′N 18°06′WCoordinates: 65°41′N 18°06′W and positioned on the west side of the inland end of the fjord Eyjafjörður.
It is surrounded by mountains, the highest being Kista (1,447 metres (4,747 feet); 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) to the west) and another peak of 1,538 metres (5,046 feet) at the head of Glerádalur, 15 kilometres (9.3 miles) to the southwest. There is a narrow coastal strip of flat land; inland is a steep but low hill. In earlier times a few spits of land (Icelandic: eyri, thus Akur-eyri) jutted from the narrow coast, but a lot of land has since been reclaimed from the sea so that today the coastline is more even except for the largest spit, Oddeyri, which was formed by the river Glerá which runs through the town. It is thought that the name of the town is possibly derived from the name of a field which may have been situated near some of the sheltered locations by the river.
The body of sea between Oddeyri and the end of the fjord is known as Pollurinn (The Pool) and is known for calm winds and a good natural harbour. Akureyri today is centered on Ráðhústorg (Town Hall Square) near the northwest corner of Pollurinn. The districts of Akureyri are: Innbær, the oldest part of town on the strip of land between the hill and Pollurinn south of the central area; Brekkan, on top of the hill; Oddeyri on the peninsula of the same name; and Glerárhverfi on the north bank of the Glerá (also referred to colloquially as Þorpið, 'the Village'). Because of the town's position at the head of a long fjord surrounded by high mountains, the climate is more typically inland than coastal, with greater variations in temperature (warmer summers, colder winters) than in many other inhabited parts of Iceland. However, the mountains shield the town from strong winds. The relatively warm climate (for its latitude) allows the botanical gardens to flourish without need of a greenhouse. The area around Akureyri has one of the warmest climates in Iceland, even though it is only 100 km (62 mi) from the Arctic Circle.

Welcome to Northern Iceland! In this vlog, we embark on a day trip adventure with Air Iceland Connect to see the otherworldly volcanic landscapes and waterfalls in Iceland's northern region.
This tour is for nature lovers and is best to explore during summer. We fly from Reykjavik to Akureyri, a 45-minute flight. We take a full day 10 hour guided tour that includes transportation. Our first stop is the stunning waterfall of Goðafoss.
We travel to Lake Myvatn´s unique nature and pseudo-craters, followed by the Dimmuborgir lava labyrinth. One of the top sights is bubbling Hverarond (aka Hverir), a geothermal area noted for its bubbling pools of mud & steaming fumaroles emitting sulfuric gas. The desolate landscape looks like mars.
Next, we reach one of the main highlights - Dettifoss which is Europe´s most powerful waterfall featured in the movie Prometheus. Next, we visit the volcanic wonderlands of Vatnajokull National Park, Jokulsargljufur canyon, Hljodaklettar (Echo cliffs), Asbyrgi a horse-shoe-shaped cliff formation. Activities on the trip:
Ektafiskur & Culinary Tasting- Here we got to taste the most delicious cuisine Iceland has to offer. Due to Iceland being surrounded by water, we were able to learn more about the fish industry and even try fermented shark!
Whale Watching and Cod Fishing in Longest Fjord- This was one of my favorite attractions on the trip! We got to set sail and watch humpback whales swim right across from us. We learned that Iceland is so popular to fish, because the country contains incredible fjords, fertile oceans, and a network of lakes and rivers which is perfect for fishing. We also had the opportunity to cod fish from our boat! Anthony had fun doing that haha
Grenjaoarstaour Turf Houses- The architectural tradition was brought to Europe by the vikings and this house is the largest, unique and oldest house in Iceland. The museum allowed us to learn more about the unique life Icelandic people had thousands of years ago.
Gooafoss Waterfall- Which is the most impressive waterfall in Iceland. The name translates to Waterfall of Gods and you're able to feel the power of this waterfall by standing of the waters edge. During the winter you're able to see the northern lights above the waterfall. It was so beautiful!
Fuglasafn Sigurgeirs Bird Museum- Other than Iceland's beautiful waters, they are also known for their wildlife and birds. Here we checked out the largest private bird collection in the country. We got to learn interesting and educational facts of Iceland's breedings.
Dimmuborgir Lava Labyinth- This attraction was once heavy with volcanic activity is now filled with extraordinary architecture. We were able to see lava pillars, caves, rugged crags and towering rocks that was created 2,300 years ago from volcanic eruptions.
Bread in Bucket Baking- Iceland is known for the Bread in a Bucket where they place dough in buckets and place the bucket underground, where the bread is baked by the heat of the hot-springs. We were lucky enough to make and experience this and the bread was to die for!
River Rafting in Skagafjorour- As much as I was scared to do this activity, we had so much fun! The scenery while river rafting was so beautiful, this is def a must when visiting Iceland!
Akureyri Thermal Pool- While, Iceland is a country that you'll always need to dress warm they still have outdoor pools and waterparks, heated of course! We decided to check it out in the downtown and Jadyn had so much fun!

Haunted History, in Blönduós, Iceland.
If these walls could talk, they might sound like sirens of the sea.
The former women's school, Kvennaskólinn, is a local treasure to the textiles industry and history of northern Iceland.
The school is now a museum located in Blönduós (north west Iceland). Aðalbjörg, the former head mistress of the school channels the past, taking us through Minjastófa Kvennaskólinns (the exhibition of the former women's school).
The Kvennaskólinn building also hosts a Textiles Artist Residency (Textílsetur) that merges old fashioned rural charm with new contemporary textile arts.
With warm thanks to Aðalbjörg Ingvarsdóttir.

Álafoss
Álafoss since 1896
One of the major attractions in Mosfellsbær, in 20 minutes driving distance from Reykjavík, is the Álafoss factory outlet where Icelands woollens industry was launched. The store is housed in the old factory premises which for decades were the leading manufacturer and exporter of Icelandic woollens. The name, Álafoss, is derived from the warm waterfall, behind the factory, that drove its mills. In homage to this heritage, the store exhibits a selection of old knitting machinery and photographs from the early days, which forms the basis for a museum. There you can find a huge selection of woollen sweaters ranging from traditional styles to high fashion, along with woollen accessories, arts, crafts and souvenirs in reasonable prices.
How to get there
The easiest way to get to Álafoss, from Reykjavik, is to take road 1 to Mosfellsbær,. Then you pass through three traffic circles and make a right turn at the fourth one. Drive ca. 800 meters (2 minute) until you reach the Álafoss shop, on your left.
Opening Hours:
Monday - Friday: 9:00 - 18:00
Saturday: 9:00 - 16:00

Talk of the Town: Siglufjörður
Siglufjörður is a historic fishing town whose fame, and fortune has always been linked to the ebb and flow of the fishing industry. A tiny shark fishing village in 1900, Siglufjörður soon became one of the largest towns in Iceland and the undisputed capital of herring fishing in the Atlantic. Siglufjörður is an area of spectacular natural beauty. The mountains and the fjords are awe-inspiring and the opportunities for outdoor activities and recreation are almost inexhaustible. The closeness to nature is always within reach, whether you wish to go on a hike, play golf, try ocean swimming or go skiing. In Siglufjörður there is a flourishing cultural life. There are several restaurants, there are also numerous galleries and workshops, museums and our local church in Siglufjörður.

Unique Iceland: Westfjords
One of the more remote areas in Iceland, the Westfjords are a combination of striking nature and hard-working people. Formerly a region devoted almost exclusively to fisheries; now the resourceful inhabitants engage in various industries like tourism, fish farming, cultural events and more. In fact, the Westfjords are a prime example of a region where nature is the main force in shaping people’s way of life. With formidable mountain landscapes, narrow mountain passes and beautiful fjords, you come to appreciate just how hard-working and resourceful the people here are when you visit the Westfjords.

Siglufjordur 2012 - Welcome by The Herring House!
Siglufjörður offers a variety of interesting and enjoyable things to do and see -- both for the tourist and for those in search of some outdoor activity.
The winter turns the town into a paradise for the skier and is a dream come true for the outdoor enthusiast. Here they have a choice of trying some cross-country skiing, slalom, skating, or zipping across the snow on a snowmobile.
During the summer, it is the mountains, the lake and the black sandy shores which call to us, and there is a wide selection of walks and hikes in both mountain and valley to tempt the visitor. A few hours walking through the area's rugged landscape gives one the chance to savour the peace and tranquillity which emanates from these natural elements.
The recreational possibilities are almost endless; it is possible to go sea angling or angling in the waters of Hólsá river -- and we must not forget that it can also be fun just fishing from the end of the pier. Midnight sails and trips across the Arctic Circle can be arranged as well. It is possible to organise special activities for those who so wish, such as combining a walking and a sailing trip by e.g. walking out along Héðinsfjörður fiord then returning home by sea. For golf enthusiasts there is a 9 hole golf course at Siglufjörður, and for swimmers, a good swimming pool.
The Síldarminjasafnið herring museum is the largest marine and industrial museum in Europe. It is housed in three widely differing premises where the visitor can become acquainted with the pursuit of the silver darlings and the processing of that valuable commodity. Síldarminjasafnið received the European Museums Award, the Michletti Award, in 2004. The Folk Music Center is also to be found in Siglufjörður.
