Adena indian Culture (700BC approx) general overview.
The Adena Indian culture was primarily in the Ohio,Indiana,West Virginia,Kentucky,Pennsylvania areas associated with the Ohio River Valley and linked tributaries. although not the earliest moundbuilders they were among the first to begin making elaborate earthworks using sacred geometric patterns. The culture flourished in Ohio because of the numerous ecosystems-wetland,hills,navigable rivers etc. and plenty of accessable resources such as flint and woodlands. The Hopewell culture which came after the Adena is seen as a gradual transition of the same nature worshipping cultures with more elaborate geometric earthworks. It is believed that the Hopewell mound groups were made by different tribal cults and were in competition with each other to some extent , although to what degree one could not speculate due to no written or archaeological evidence.
