“Harry was here 1945”: Graffiti and the Nazi Occupation of Alderney

1STAFFORDSHIRE UNIVERSITY, 2
During the Second World War, the island of Alderney in the British Channel Islands was occupied by the Nazis, who intended to
use the island as a strategically advantageous position from which they could invade mainland Britain. In order to facilitate the
large-scale construction of fortifications, thousands of people were sent there from across Europe to undertake forced labour.
Housed in a network of camps, these prisoners were held in appalling living conditions, beatings and ill-treatment were
common, and many were literally worked to death. These prisoners and their overseers left behind a complex body of graffiti
which attests to their existence on the island. Likewise, the fortifications built by the prisoners have seen various layers of
graffiti added to them over the years by people who have inhabited or visited Alderney.
This paper will consider the contribution of this graffiti to our knowledge about the events of the Occupation and the various
ways it can be used to recall individual and collective experiences. As some of the graffiti takes the form of names of prisoners,
the role of this evidence in identifying individuals will also be considered. Graffiti created since the end of the Second World
War will also be addressed in order to evaluate how these motifs can help assess past and present attitudes towards the
Occupation. Looking to the future, this paper will consider the role of graffiti as evidence of recent conflict.
Nazi Fortifications on Alderney
The Nazis occupied the English Channel Island of Alderney, and fortified it, creating Festung Alderney as a part of Hitler's Atlantic Wall.
This is a slide show of some of my photos of these bunkers etc.

**** These structures were built by (mostly Russian) slave labourers, and inmates of the SS run Concentration Camp on the island, more than 300 of whom died on this tiny 2 by 3 mile long island, so think of them as you watch ;(

HUGE ABANDONED FACTORY - Exploring Redhill Earthworks
In this week's video we explored a huge abandoned Earthworks factory in Redhill. We did not expect this explore to be at all as enormous as it was, we were pleasantly surprised!
The walk up to the factory was eerie with old lamposts that had not been used for many years. As soon as we turned the corner we were struck by the beauty of this huge structure. The steel had long since rusted and it was covered in graffiti. We loved exploring as much of this place as we could! Unfortunately, we did not climb to the top as it simply was not safe, there were steps ripped off and we couldn't tell what was floor or what was dirt covering up a huge hole for us to fall through!
Was a great adventure and we hope you enjoy.

Houmet Herbe
A song about a derelict, crumbling fort near the island of Alderney. We slept there overnight once.
Taken from Squier Squier's forthcoming album, Oversleep.
Mixed by Peter Zed and Squier.
Shot by Dan J Austin.
We know where the mother tongue does grow.
Over rock and through bone.
Houmet Herbe, Houmet Herbe.
A crumbling fort, a crashing sea.
Stranded next to Alderney.
Houmet Herbe, Houmet Herbe.
Rats scratch amongst the rocks
the moon is full, the tide is up.
Houmet Herbe, Houmet Herbe.
Telling tales, singing songs
Stranded with your closest chums.
Houmet Herbe, Houmet Herbe.

We explore & Climb Redhill Earthworks
Fullers Earthworks in Redhill was one of only three places in Britain where the mining and processing of Fullers Earth occurred. The Copyhold Works at Redhill was established in 1860 and by just 1920 it was supplying the Southern Oil Company, Chemicals LTD, British Glues and Prices Patent Candles Company.
Laporte Industries bought the firm in 1954, during this period it was employing over 780 workers. Crazy eh? There was a very large quarry just east of the site used for mining clay. This left the surrounding area covered with brown reddish clay leaving it looking almost martian.
Another interesting fun fact, Redhill factory and the surrounding area was actually used to film some alien scenes out of the 70’s series of Dr. Who! Unfortunately, in 1997 Redhill factory closed down as other countries could produce and transport the product more cheaply. After this it was brought by Biffa Waste Services and then not a lot is known after this.
Really hope you enjoy the video guys :-)

SUMMARY
=======
Jersey (, French: [ʒɛʁzɛ]; Jèrriais: Jèrri IPA: [dʒɛri]), officially the Bailiwick of Jersey (French: Bailliage de Jersey; Jèrriais: Bailliage dé Jèrri), is a Crown dependency located near the coast of Normandy, France. Jersey was part of the Duchy of Normandy, whose dukes went on to become kings of England from 1066. After Normandy was lost by the kings of England in the 13th century, and the ducal title surrendered to France, Jersey and the other Channel Islands remained attached to the English crown.
The bailiwick consists of the island of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, along with surrounding uninhabited islands and rocks collectively named Les Dirouilles, Les Écréhous, Les Minquiers, Les Pierres de Lecq, and other reefs. Although the bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey are often referred to collectively as the Channel Islands, the Channel Islands are not a constitutional or political unit. Jersey has a separate relationship to the Crown from the other Crown dependencies of Guernsey and the Isle of Man, although all are held by the monarch of the United Kingdom.Jersey is a self-governing parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy, with its own financial, legal and judicial systems, and the power of self-determination. The Lieutenant Governor on the island is the personal representative of the Queen. It is the second closest of the Channel Islands to France, after Alderney.
Jersey is not part of the United Kingdom, and has an international identity separate from that of the UK, but the UK is constitutionally responsible for the defence of Jersey. The definition of United Kingdom in the British Nationality Act 1981 is interpreted as including the UK and the Islands together. The European Commission have confirmed in a written reply to the European Parliament in 2003 that Jersey is within the Union as a European Territory for whose external relationships the UK is responsible. Jersey is not fully part of the European Union but has a special relationship with it, notably being treated as within the European Community for the purposes of free trade in goods.British cultural influence on the island is evident in its use of English as the main language and the British pound as its primary currency, even if some people still speak the Norman language. Additional cultural commonalities include driving on the left, access to the BBC and ITV regions, a school curriculum following that of England, and the popularity of British sports, including football, cricket, and rugby.
