Marly's Visit To Lightning Ridge, N.S.W. Australia
Marly received a special invite and has now visited the wonders of Australia's brilliant new Black Opal & Fossil Expo, with hands-on action at Lightning Ridge in Outback NSW, just 750km North West from Sydney.
The region's aboriginal heritage is linked in through Opalicious Opal's new EXPO & Tag-Along Tours -- to the opal fields and to search for opals and fossils from the past. He had a marvellous time and could not believe what he
heard and saw.
Opal Jim, is the heart of the Expo and an icon at The Ridge; he has lived there for around 40 years; he dreamed of, planned and built the Expo, along with a guy they call The Viking and their tame Gemmologist Barrie O'Leary -
who wrote A Field Guide to Australian Opals.
With another oldtimer, Tony, they guided Marly through a pioneering and entrepreneurial experience in all above-ground opal activities at The Ridge where fortunes are made and lost and the true entrepreneur is still king.
They took him fossicking for colour, showed him the play of colour and how opals change with lighting changes; they showed him how to buy his own opal rough for cutting and polishing and preparing the finished gemstones for mounting into rings, pendants and other jewellery.
Marly met a lot of the locals and had some great conversations with them. You can see the locals in some of the other videos.

Abandoned opal mine
Slovak opal mines, also known as Mines of Dubnik, Dubnik Opal Mines, in the second half of the 19th century they were also called Červenik-Dubnik opal mines, Hungarian: A Vörösvágás – dubniki opálbányak, or Vörösvágás Dubniker Opálgruben. First written mention about the village Červenica specifically mentioning opal mines is from 1409. Mines were known in the entire world since the end of the 16th century because of the opal mined here. It is possible that opal was mined here since the roman era. Slovak opal was a firm favourite of Napoleon’s family. Empress Joséphine wore the most famous piece called Fire of Troy. The largest opal found was called Harlequin, mined in 1775 and valued at 700 000 Dutch guilders. Today it is displayed in the Museum of Natural History in Vienna.
The opal mines enjoyed a golden era working with the family of a jeweller from Vienna Samuela Johanna Nepomuka Goldschmidt, who lived in Dubnik. Slovak Opal Mines were the only mined deposit of opal worldwide until the discovery of deposits in Mexico and Australia in the 19th century. Mining operations were suspended indefinitely after the creation of Czechoslovakia because of bad financial situation.
The history of opal mines until 1922 was documented by a distinguished Slovak Historian Štefan Butkovič in his book History of Slovak precious opal from Dubnik. The golden age of Opal Mines near Červenica is recalled by the reconstructed entrance into tunnel Jozef.
