3 Things You Didn't Know About Maple Grove
3 Things that might surprise you about Maple Grove
With its burgeoning population and development, the northwest suburb of Maple Grove is often known today as one of Minnesota's fastest growing cities, a mecca of shops and restaurants, and a hub for recreational activity with its many parks, lakes, and trails. But all that growth started because of one thing about forty years ago: the opening of a new section of Interstate 94.
Here's three things that might surprise you about Maple Grove.
#1: Interstate 94 transformed Maple Grove
When a new section of Interstate 94 opened up in 1974, it was a game changer for the Village of Maple Grove. Prior to 1974, Maple Grove was a small rural township, 36 square miles made up mostly of farmland, fields, and 2,000 acres of gravel mines. The small village had just over 6,000 residents in 1970, but that all changed once I-94 came through Maple Grove four years later.
The freeway came through Maple Grove, and all of a sudden people are saying, 'where did this community come from?' said Maple Grove City Administrator Al Madsen.
By the end of 1974, Maple Grove had become a city, and by 1980, the population had more than tripled in size with 20,525 residents. Today, the city's population is around 62,000.
As residential neighborhoods popped up, the city had plenty of land to develop, a blank canvas of sorts for city officials to plan and map out what the future Maple Grove would look like, and where there's residential, retail often follows.
#2: A retail hub behind Bloomington and the Mall of America.
Today Maple Grove is home to more retail that nearly any other city in the state. While retail started to move in the 1980's, it was the creation of the Main Street shops in 2000 and the opening of the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes around 2004 that really got things going.
With the Fountains at Arbor Lakes and The Grove retail developments opening up in recent years, Maple Grove has well over three million square feet of developed retail space, and the city has about a third of its land still available for development.
While the city's many shops, restaurants, and services are well used by Maple Grove residents, because of its proximity to I-94, the city has also become a one-stop shop for thousands of people from upstate Minnesota and even neighboring places like Canada and North Dakota.
We come here all the time, said Heidi Cloutier of St. Michael. [It's] only about ten minutes on 94, so very quick.
Laurie Bammann of Sartell was shopping at the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes on a recent afternoon, and she said often opts for Maple Grove over further away shopping destinations likes the Mall of America.
We don't have to go all the way to Minneapolis, it's just so pretty here, so we just come here, said Bammann.
#3: Weaver Lake Beach is one of the city's hidden gems
Depending on who you ask, Maple Grove's best kept secret may be its recreational assets with all its lakes, parks, and trails.
Weaver Lake Beach is one great example. Located on the city's west side and tucked within Weaver Lake Community Park, the beach is a spot that many Maple Grove residents have yet to discover.
We've heard from numerous people over the years that they walk over the hill from the parking lot and low and behold there's this beach, said Mark Saari, Superindentdent of Recreation with Maple Grove Parks & Recreation.
With a fishing dock and concession stand, Weaver Lake Beach isn't new. It's been around since the 1960's, but it's the one beach owned and operated by the city, and it's a jewel to discover.
We would love to see more [people] come out here, said Saari.

Maple Grove Declares AMC Arbor Lakes Theater a “Public Nuisance”
A Maple Grove movie theater just received a designation it won’t be bragging about anytime soon.
Monday night, the Maple Grove City Council declared the AMC Arbor Lakes theater as a public nuisance. City officials say the theater is guilty of numerous property maintenance violations, including excessive trash, potholes in the parking lot and overgrown weeds.
The city notified the property owner and AMC’s corporate office about the violations, but all calls and letters went unanswered.
“Maple Grove has a very robust property maintenance code,” said Joe Hogeboom, Maple Grove’s community development director. “What’s special about this particular property is they are in the Arbor Lakes district. They are very large. They’re very centrally located. And so any negative impact that they have has a sort of trickle effect to the other commercial users in the area.”
If the theater doesn’t address the problems, the city will handle them and assess the cost onto the property owner.

Maple Grove Approves Senior Housing, New Luxury Apartments
The Maple Grove City Council approved two high-end housing projects, one fills a need for senior housing, another is market-rate apartments. Both would be located near future Hy-Vee grocery stores.
Havenwood of Maple Grove
The senior housing is a four-story, 150-unit apartment complex, which would be located near County Road 101 and Bass Lake Road. The complex called Havenwood of Maple Grove would offer 60 independent living units and 90 units for assisted living and memory care.
The developer, Minnetonka-based Roers Companies, says there’s a “strong demand” for senior housing. Company representatives say they would like to begin construction this fall. Their goal is to open in the spring of 2021.
Havenwood of Maple Grove
A 10,000-square-foot daycare facility is also planned for this site.
A Hy-Vee grocery store is under construction to the south of this location. Hy-Vee plans to open this fall.
99th Avenue Apartments
The Maple Grove City Council also approved a new market-rate apartment complex next to a future Hy-Vee grocery store in the northern part of Maple Grove.
A Fargo, N.D.-based developer will construct a five-story building with more than 160 units at a site south of Highway 610 and east of Maple Grove Parkway. The 99th Avenue Apartments would be built in a wooded area. A tree replacement plan is required for the project.
Representatives with the developer, Enclave Companies, says “a good job base” attracted them to the city. They say the amenities for the project will be similar to 610 West Apartments in Brooklyn Park or apartment projects near the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes in Maple Grove. An Enclave spokesperson says to expect a rooftop water amenity such as a hot tub or pool, as well as a “sway garden,” which is a section of hammocks.
As far as the Hy-Vee grocery store, there’s no time frame yet on when construction on that project will begin.

More New Restaurants Coming Soon to Maple Grove
If you dine out in Maple Grove regularly, you will soon notice some new restaurants in the city.
More than a half dozen new restaurants are set to open in the months ahead, and what city leaders are most excited about is the different kinds of restaurants moving in.
“I think that it’s great to have good restaurants that come to town and have good food and good service,” said Maple Grove Mayor Mark Steffenson.
There’s not exactly a shortage of restaurants in Maple Grove. Count them up, and they number around 110. Still many of those restaurants can also be found in neighboring suburbs and even other states.
“I think we’ve heard a lot over the last number of years that we would like to see more independent restaurants, less chain, national chain restaurants,” said Steffenson.
Signs indicate change is on the way. Six new restaurants are moving into Maple Grove and many of them, such as Fiesta Cancun, are independent businesses, locally owned and operated. Fiesta Cancun is moving in along Main Street in Maple Grove.
“It’s an expansion of our restaurant base, which quite frankly, has been pretty healthy anyway,” said Steffenson.
Some of the new restaurants are new construction, such as the CRAVE restaurant being built at the corner of Elm Creek Boulevard and Main Street.
Other new restaurants are redevelopment, such as the craft bar and eatery, Brick & Bourbon, that’s moving into the vacant Don Pablo’s space along Elm Creek Boulevard.
With one location currently in Stillwater, Brick & Bourbon will bring its brand of craft cocktails and hearty fare to Maple Grove after it pumps around $500,000 in renovations to the existing building.
New Restaurants Near Maple Grove Hospital
Near Maple Grove’s hospital, three new restaurants will find a home.
“We’re starting to see that development fill out at last, it’s obviously been a long time,” said Steffenson about the retail area near the hospital.
Rosati’s Chicago Pizza is opening soon in The Grove development. The area will also see a new Rock Elm Tavern, as the owner of Plymouth’s location expands into Maple Grove.
And finally, construction is also underway on a Raising Cane’s restaurant that will open near the hospital.
If you’re still keeping count of the new restaurants on the way, stay tuned, because news of yet another restaurant opening could be on the way hints Maple Grove’s mayor.
“I know that my wife is excited about one that hasn’t announced they’re coming yet,” said Steffenson. “People will know the name when they hear it, and it will be exciting if it comes.”

An unexpected holiday look in Maple Grove
Designers are going for the unexpected when it comes to holiday decorations at the Shoppes of Arbor Lakes in Maple Grove. It's a big project inspired by a sculpture thousands of miles away. They hope it will bring people in just to take a look, and of course stay to do a little shopping.
That unique look involves big balls of grapvines covered by thousands of lights. The balls are then stacked in a fashion to resemble a Christmas tree.
After setting up a real tree last year, Shoppes manager Wendy Thompson says this year they wanted to do something different.
I thought how can we do something that is a little out of the box and non traditional, that will be more of an attraction for people to come out to the Shoppes?
Little by little, that non-traditional look is taking shape inside a warehouse in Plymouth. A company called Christmas Décor creates decorations for dozens of retailers and homeowners. But this one is different.
We've never done anything like this, says Sue Holscher. But they're convinced it will be different and eye--catching.
Thompson found the inspiration on the Internet. A picture of a sculpture from Istanbul, Turkey caught her eye.
I started doing a little research on the internet, and found a tree fabricated out of steel. It was a beautiful lit image. Its something that is unexpected.
But what do you call it? It's not really a tree.
We're referring to the piece that's being installed as a holiday sculpture because its not going to exactly be a tree, says Wendy Thompson. I think people will be pleasantly surprised.

City expresses concerns about Maple Grove Rest Stop Expansion
Expect to see changes coming to the Maple Grove rest stop area, as part of the Interstate 94 improvement project.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation plans to significantly expand the Maple Grove Rest Area. They will add 12 semi-tractor trailer stalls, which is a roughly 40 percent increase in that type of parking. MN-DOT says there’s a need for more spaces for truckers in the Twin Cities area.
The Maple Grove City Council had to give final approval to the I-94 project at this week’s city council meeting. But, the Mayor expressed concern over the rest area expansion because of security reasons.
“Our concern is it’s an easy draw for criminal activity, drug activity or other related activities,” says Mayor Mark Steffenson. “My preference would be that it would go away, but if it isn’t going to go away, I want to make sure we have it secure to make it easier for law enforcement to deal with problems out there.”
A MN-DOT representative at the meeting said there would be security cameras installed as part of the expansion.
Construction begins this summer on the project, which will include adding lanes on I-94 and building noise walls.
