Sunday the 27th of April 2014
X-----X-----X
Slough. One town. Many faces.
The Sikh festival of Vaisakhi is one of the most sacred festivals in the Sikh calendar.
It celebrates the birth of Sikh brotherhood Khalsa and is celebrated by Sikhs around the world, marking the day in 1699 when the faith was born.
A sea of orange took over the streets of Slough on Sunday the 27th April 2014.
An estimated 15,000 Sikhs took part in the annual 'Nagar Kirtan' procession to celebrate Vaisakhi.
The procession started at Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara Sikh Temple in Sheehy Way, taking in The Frith, Wexham Road, Shaggy Calf Lane, Stoke Poges Lane before arriving at the Ramgharia Gurdwara temple in Woodland Avenue.
The event included drumming by the 'Ministry of Dhol' and demonstrations of Gatka - a Sikh martial art involving sword-fighting.

Why does Free Indian Food (Langar) get served at Sikh Temples? Interview at Southall Gurdwara London
✓ Documentary: we are very much humbled, in awe & honoured to have visited the Southall Temple (Gurdwara), in this video joint general secretary of the temple Navraj kindly takes time out to say a few words about how the Sikh faith started, why Langer is given to people
Also a true privilege and pleasure to have gotten a taste of the tastiest of freshly made food anywhere, being given food that was blessed by hand and human touch and further energised and charged by positive thoughts; this is Absolutely Delicious Spiritually Blessed Food!!!
It is truly refreshing to come across people who are carrying out unconditional service in order to help the most needy in our society; this we have found especially with the Sikh / Singh community, their act of Seva, Langar & helping the needy in society touches a nerve deep within our soul.
The Temple's chapattis are all freshly made daily by the volunteer ladies who come in every day.
We had a plate of the delicious food that was being served up on the day; which was: Mattar Aloo (Garden Peas & Potato Curry), Punjabi Dal Makhni, Kala Chana Aloo (Black Chickpea Curry), Kheer (Rice & Milk Pudding), Dahi (Yoghurt) and of course the freshly made buttered chapatti.
Additional secret recipe ingredient is heartfelt love and devotion.
Volunteer Sikhs give out free langar, langar is Prasad (also known as food blessed by God) so they don't charge for it, so it gets served up for free!!!
Unlike some places there is nothing hidden and no secret to the recipe because everything is made in the open kitchen in full view of people.
A very special thank you to Chef & Cook Harbinder, Navraj and everyone else we came across who very much welcomed us and graciously allowed us a privileged glimpse into their kitchen to do the videoing even though they were extraordinarily busy.
The temple And kitchen never closes, it's open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, the people at this Temple bring only sunshine into everyone's lives.
You say Singh, we say King, May God Bless them all for all that they do!!!
