Durham is a city in northeast England, south of Newcastle upon Tyne. The River Wear loops around the Romanesque Durham Cathedral and Norman Durham Castle. North of the castle, 13th-century, medieval Crook Hall is home to gardens and a maze. South of the river, Durham University offers a Botanic Garden with woodland and tropical plants, and the Oriental Museum exhibiting Asian, Egyptian and Middle Eastern artefacts.
is a historic city and the county town of County Durham in North East England. The city lies on the River Wear, to the west of Sunderland, south of Newcastle upon Tyne and to the north of Darlington. Founded over the final resting place of St Cuthbert, its Norman cathedral became a centre of pilgrimage in medieval England. The cathedral and adjacent 11th-century castle were designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. The castle has been the home of Durham University since 1832. HM Prison Durham is also located close to the city centre.
Durham is situated 13 miles (21 km) to the south west of Sunderland and 18 miles (29 km) to the south of Newcastle. The River Wear flows north through the city, making an incised meander which encloses the centre on three sides to form Durham's peninsula.
Durham railway station is situated on the East Coast Main Line between Edinburgh and London; rail travellers coming from the south enter Durham over a spectacular Victorian viaduct high above the city. Durham bus station serves the city of Durham. The bus station is managed by Durham County Council.

Graham Hughes's #PUBCAST 14 | Is The Great British Pub DOOMED?
In a departure from our usual thing of banging on about Brexit, I've decided to take Graham Hughes's PUBCAST in new directions.
So let's kick things off with an informal chat down the Station House pub in Durham with Mark Dodds and Nick Love in order to talk about... pubs.
The Station House, the pub we were in for this week's PUBCAST is an excellent 'Micro Pub' – The Station House was opened in December 2015 by Chris and Susannah (Susie) Mansfield, with the aim of building the pub they wanted to drink in, in the hope that enough other people agreed!
We have ROUGHLY 50,000 pubs in the UK. Of these:
• Tied Pubs: Around 20,000 pubs are ‘independent’ Tied pubs owned by a few large ‘pub companies’ (broadly these are ‘pub (property) owning companies’ who do not brew beer) who rent the pubs to thousands of individual publicans who are responsible for everything, property maintenance, upkeep, managing, hiring staff, payroll, VAT H&S etc etc; Who are obliged (the ‘Beer Tie’) to buy their beers (and often wine, spirits and soft drinks) from their pubco’s limited product list at profiteering supply prices (about DOUBLE the open market (free of tie)) These pubs generally aren’t obviously branded or themed and are ryun by individuals and so are called ‘independent’. Generally these pubs are gradually losing trade because they’re run down and can’t compete at any level with the competition and are coming onto the market ‘suitable for alternative use’ after decades of chronic underinvestment by their freeholders at a rate of around 1,000 pubs a year.
• Managed Pubs: Another 20,000 are owned by a few large ‘pub companies’ (some of them are a different arm of the same pub companies noted above) who run the pubs through head office, staff them and supply them with products from the open market. These groups generally run pubs to branded formulae that people recognise wherever they are in the UK. These pubs generally are invested in, properly looked after and well maintained. This lot includes JD Wetherspoon and these pubs generally ‘outperform the market’.
• Independent Pubs: The (fewer than) 10,000 pubs left – range from our original cultural heritage, genuine, iconic, idiosyncratic, ‘independent’ one off ‘Free Houses’ typically run by a couple of people - landlady and landlord – that the whole world brings to mind when imagining the ‘British Pub’ to larg-ish groups (up to 400 pubs) of ‘family’ owned brewers who also own pubs (such as Adnams) to newcomers to the pub sector micro pubs and new small and micro-breweries opening brewery taps to small pubcos owned and run by a couple of people keeping long standing ethos of pubs alive.
• Across the above there are different ways that pubs are operated, managed and run, under dozens of different types of tenure from freehold to lease that makes it impossible to describe the pub sector accurately and succinctly without being contradicted by someone somewhere who’s got a different agenda to yours. Generally that’ll be the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) the pub sector’s trade body the pubco’s propaganda poodle
• For publicans / licensees running tied pubco pubs – support on Pubs Code and Market rent Only (MRO) and how to handle being bullied by aggressive pubcos

A Short Trip to Durham During Winter | Durham UK || Tinny's ESCAPES Vlog
Date: 6th February 2018
Since I was about to leave the UK back to Malaysia, so I decided to visit this historic city where is located near to Newcastle Upon Tyne that I always passed by when I was travelling to other cities by train every time, but I had never taken time to visit. It was with a purpose of meeting my friend, Patrick to say goodbye before I left England.
I met Pat at the Durham Railway Station, and then we just simply walked around in the town. We crossed the Framwellgate Bridge, walked along the River Wear, and stopped by the Prebends Bridge to take some pictures of the beautiful snowy sceneries. Afterwards, we visited the Durham Cathedral (Known as one of the finest Norman architectures and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with nearby Durham Castle). It is worth for a visit if you are a fan of history and historic architecture, as well as Harry Potter. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was realised on film through bewildering several locations within the UK, which the elegant cloisters (Hogwarts School quadrangle) and the cathedral chapter house (the scene for Professor McGonagall’s class teaching the young wizards to turn animals into water goblets) were included.
I was planning to enter the Durham Castle but I changed my mind due to some reasons. Then we had our lunch at Pizza Express in the town before I took my train back to Newcastle.

Once used for the training of priests. Only partially abandoned but still very sad to see this beautiful old building with its stunning Victorian architecture, falling into ruin and vandalised. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic center are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.
Its powerful religious position granted such great honor to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Shocking moment police are attacked with bricks and fireworks after being surrounded by 100 CHILDREN during 'appalling' incident in Durham
Durham Police released the footage of officers being surrounded by children
They have urged parents to take responsibility after the disturbance in Stanley
The footage shows police officers responding to a report of a 'vulnerable female'
They are surrounded and youths in hoodies throw bricks, fireworks and attack a Police Community Support Officer
Police have released footage of officers being surrounded by up to 100 teenagers in a town centre and 'appalling' scenes as a number of them launched an attack.
They urged parents to take responsibility for their children following the frightening disturbance in Stanley, County Durham.
The video from body cameras shows uniformed officers responding to a report of a 'vulnerable female' at the bus station, and being quickly surrounded.
A Police Community Support Officer was punched in the face and a group of around 20 youths in hoodies threw bricks, lit fireworks and attacked the police.Officers at the disturbing confrontation, which occurred around 8.40pm on Saturday November 3, were heard to say 'We are asking people nicely to move away' before tensions rose and they shouted: 'Everybody out, move back now.'
Sergeant Emma Kay said: 'Disorder of this kind is totally unacceptable and violence against our officers will not be tolerated.
'Action will be taken against all the individuals involved that night and Stanley Police will continue to take positive action against anyone involved in this type of behaviour.
'Parents were asked to come and review the footage from the officers' body cams that night and they all agreed the behaviour of the children was appalling. While there is a hardcore group of individuals involved in this incident, there are many more people stood on the sidelines, young people who are going to affect their life chances by continuing to engage in this type of behaviour.
'We are asking for parents to step up to the plate, take responsibility for your children.
'Do you know where they are, or are they going to bring trouble to your door?'
To prevent further disturbances, they had set up a text message service which will alert parents when there is trouble in the town centre and it will tell them to collect their teenagers and remove them from trouble.
The sergeant asked them to sign up to the Be Informed text service which will alert them to collect their children if there is trouble in Stanley.
