Ted Robbins preview
Ted Robbin and Chetham's Big Band look ahead to The Stoller Hall's Opening Weekend, 22 April 2017
Manchester
By The Beautiful South, arrangement by Michael Betteridge.
We are The Sunday Boys, an unauditioned male-voice choir from Manchester in England.
We have great expectations, and challenge the idea that you have to be a professional singer to have high artistic ambitions.
Established in 2016 by the young composer and choral director Michael Betteridge, we have performed in prestigious venues across the North of England and in March last year embarked on our first international tour, with a three-day visit to Iceland.
Michael wanted to create a new male voice choir to brighten up Sunday evenings by bringing gay men and their allies together to sing exceptionally.
Over the last three years, The Sunday Boys has grown from small beginnings to perform at prestigious gigs in the city and beyond.
We sing the songs together that we love as individuals. We come together to sing, and in doing so, meet new people and build great friendships.
The Sunday Boys now spills over into the week, with spontaneous social gatherings and trips to share Manchester life together.
Being really good at what we do, singing, is important to everyone in The Sunday Boys. That doesn't mean that you have to have had lots of musical experience or even done any singing before. So long as you want to give it a go, and are prepared to learn, then it sounds like you have what it takes to join us.
We are laid back and work to ensure our rehearsals are both relaxed and that we all see an improvement in what we do each week.
We delivered our first large gig in July 2017 where we celebrated the the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act 1967, which initiated the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality. We had a concert in Iceland last year, and more recently in July 2018 at the prestigious Stoller Hall in Manchester.

Jonathan Hultén - Chants from Another Place (album trailer)
The debut album from the enigmatic Swedish Grammy-winning songwriter JONATHAN HULTÉN entitled Chants From Another Place is due for release on Kscope on 13th March 2020 and is available to pre-order / pre-save
The musical inspiration for singer/songwriter JONATHAN HULTÉN’s debut album Chants From Another Place is drawn from a capella folk and church choir compositions. Throughout the album, tales are weaved and musical influences collide as HULTÉN draws comparisons to artists including Nick Drake, Sufjan Stevens and Fleet Foxes, as well as traditional folk artists Bert Jansch & John Martyn right through to his contemporaries in Anna Ternheim, Chelsea Wolfe & Hexvessel.
HULTÉN has created a deeply reflective and personal world that he invites listeners to explore. Recorded solely by HULTÉN in his studio in Stockholm, Sweden, the twelve compositions that make up Chants From Another Place were mixed by Ola Ersfjord from Cuervo Recording Service in Madrid, Spain.
The cover art is a self-penned portrait, reflecting the melancholy found within the songs on the album and an insight into HULTÉN’s unique persona.
HULTÉN says that: “Chants From Another Place will thematically take you through landscapes of ecstasy, passing mountains of death and rebirth, sailing seas of adventure, traversing wastelands of despair and forests of myth. It is an inward journey and only time can tell which places will be visited under its duration. It is a tale of spiritual death and rebirth.”
JONATHAN HULTÉN will join CHELSEA WOLFE on tour, opening for her ‘Birth of Violence’ acoustic tour in the UK & Europe in March 2020

THE ORGAN OF MANCHESTER TOWN HALL
CAVAILLÉ-COLL, PARIS 1877 & 1893
T.C. LEWIS, BRIXTON 1912
JARDINE, MANCHESTER 1970
This organ was originally built with three manuals and pedals by the celebrated French organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll in 1877. Cavaillé-Coll returned to enlarge the instrument and added a fourth solo manual in 1893. The organ was rebuilt and further enlarged with the addition of a fifth manual by T.C. Lewis in 1912. A minor rebuild took place by Jardine Organ Builders in 1970 which provided a new console.
The organ contains the largest body of Cavaillé-Coll pipework in the UK and despite years of neglect it remains one the finest and most important musical instruments in Britain. The organ became unreliable for concerts in the late 1990's and large parts of the instrument are unplayable due to collapsing pipework, perished leatherwork or mechanical/electrical failure. The Grade I listed Town Hall is currently closed for a 330 million pound restoration until 2024 which will require the temporary removal and storage of this instrument.

The Ballad of Johnny Longstaff - Promo
Three time BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winners The Young’uns present a new and unique piece of modern folk theatre.
The Ballad of Johnny Longstaff is the story of one man’s adventure from begging on the streets in the north of England to fighting against fascism in the Spanish Civil War, taking in the Hunger Marches and the Battle of Cable Street. It’s a timely, touching and often hilarious musical adventure following the footsteps of one working class hero who witnessed some of the momentous events of the 1930s. With their trademark harmony, honesty and humour the Teesside trio bring together 16 specially composed songs, spoken word, striking imagery and the real recorded voice of Johnny himself to tell a remarkable human story oozing with modern relevance.
“The harmonies are glorious, the wit is waspish. The songs are powerful, the banter is relentless and the audience is happy. What’s not to like? ★★★★★ The Guardian
“Glorious....celebrating the uncelebrated with warmth, vigour and passion” ★★★★ MOJO
“TheTeesside trio have captured hearts – and awards – with a magic combination of lusty acapella singing, memorable tunes and heart-on-sleeve storytelling with an unashamedly political cry for social justice.” ★★★★ Songlines
“Magnificent - destined to become hailed as national treasures before long” ★★★★★ Maverick
“Powerful, inspiring and moving” ★★★★★ RnR Magazine

The Dimples (affectionately known as The Dimps) were part of the Don Arden Galaxy stable in Carnaby Street along side Small Faces, Nashville Teens, Move, Attack, Chris Jagger etc. Initially a Scunthorpe based blues/soul band, formed by Gladwin and Wincott in 1964. Joined in 1965 by Greg Tomlinson from the Chechakos and Craig Austin from the Imps (briefly featuring Iain Matthews) Matthews Southern Comfort/Pyramid/Fairport Convention and Plainsong). The Dimples were later to become hotel trashing pioneers at London's infamous Madison Hotel in Sussex Gardens and regularly working the Marquee, Flamingo, Speakeasy, 100 Club and all other major London blues haunts. Also touring the University & College Circuits, Mecca and Top Rank Ballrooms, All-nighters, Twisted Wheel in Manchester, Golden Torch at Hanley, 76 Club Burton, Nottingham's Boat Clubs, Newcastle's Go-Go & Quay Club, Hull Skyline, Sheffield City Hall & Esquire Club etc. There were countless others but good old Jazz Workshop where it all started also deserves a special mention. First live radio gig at Tiles in Oxford Street on Ready Steady Radio with DJ Pete Murray. Live TV debut on Granada's Scene at Six Thirty. The first single though totally inappropriate and unrepresentative of the band, was released under protest on Decca after turning down Hi Ho Silver Lining. The B-side was much better and apparently is now something of a Northern Soul & Mod Circuit classic. The Dimples eventually evolved into psychedelic harmony soul band Gospel Garden (Camp label) with various personnel changes before finally becoming Methuselah (Elektra). Methuselah then splintered into Distant Jim (Negram), Steamhammer (CBS) and Amazing Blondel (Island).
In 1999 three original members of The Dimples (Stuart Smith on drums, Greg Tomlinson on guitar/vocals and Craig Austin on guitar/vocals) reformed and are featured here performing at the Millennium Megabash at Scunny Baths together with bassist Bill Gibson and singer Fred Havercroft from the original Imps.
