In former days, there were two other villages: Oerd and Sier, but these were drowned and now lie in the sea. The name of these villages live on in MS Oerd and MS Sier, which are the names of the ferries to the island.

Filipina-Dutch WANDER mom in the Netherlands | A visit to the interactive museum in Friesland
So, today’s video, I will bring you to Kornwerderzand in the province of Friesland. We will visit the Afsluitdijk Wadden Center- it is an interactive museum where you can see some exhibits of how the Dutch people live in a constant battle with water through the ages, facing a future of climate change and the rising sea levels. In this museum you can also experience the story of about the Wadden Sea Unesco World Heritage site, the unique Fish Migration river, the future Afsluitdijk and the IJsselmeer- the largest fresh water basin in Europe. And, you will also see some fragments our trip on the Afsluitdijk (Enclosure Dam)
Well, have you ever heard about the Afsluitdijk? It is once featured in National Geographic documentary. Afsluitdijk is a major dam and the longest causeway in the Netherlands. It was constructed between 1927 and was finished in May 20, 1932. The dam runs from Den Oever in North Holland province to the village of Zurich in Friesland province, over a length of 32 kilometres (20 mi) and a width of 90 metres (300 ft), at an initial height of 7.25 metres (23.8 ft) above sea level. The Afsluitdijk is a fundamental part of the larger Zuiderzee Works, damming off the Zuiderzee, a salt water inlet of the North Sea, and turning it into the fresh water lake of the IJsselmeer. The dam serves as a sea barrier to protect the inland against flooding.

Exploring the North in the Netherlands
The Provinces of Groningen and Friesland in the Netherlands lay at the northern most coastline of the country, with ferries connecting to the Islands Ameland and Schiermonnikoog.
Quaint face bricked villages with cobblestone roads are speckled over the countryside. The Dutch use their favorite way of transport from one town to the other - their bicycles - mostly happily chatting away with their buddies on two rolling wheels. The girls are predominantly tall, strikingly beautiful with long hair flying in the wind.
Others move around with their boats through the narrow water channels. Draw bridges make way as they approach.
The Dutch enthusiasm for artful flower arrangements is visible at every window and even the smallest garden is blooming in full splendor. The sun tints the country side in the most vivid colors, so that even ordinary cornfields contrast beautifully with the blue sky.
Infinite are the bicycle roads on the Dykes, which invite long rides with an unobstructed view to the Wadden Sea. One day the weather is peaceful, the next day it will change and show a harsh face.

Beautiful Texel (Slideshow)
Texel is a municipality and an island with a population of 13,641 in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. It is the largest and most populated island of the West Frisian Islands in the Wadden Sea.
The dune landscape on Texel is a unique habitat for wildlife. Notable areas include De Slufter, where the tide comes in and meets the dunes, forming a marshy environment rich in both fauna and flora. Texel is known for its wildlife, particularly in winter, when birds of prey and geese take up residence. About one third of Texel is a protected nature reserve. A wetland called Utopia has been designed for birds to nest in.

Personeelsreis Ameland & 27 september 2013
Personeelsreis Ameland & 27 september 2013

The inhabitants are called Amelanders.
First mentioned as Ambla in the 8th century, it paid tribute to the county of Holland until in 1424 its lord Ritske Jelmera declared it a 'free lordship' (vrijheerschap).
Although Holland, Friesland and the Holy Roman Emperor contested this quasi-independent status, it remained a free lordship until the ruling family, Cammingha, died out in 1708. After that, the Frisian stadtholder Johan Willem Friso of Orange-Nassau became lord of Ameland and after him, his son the stadtholder of all the Netherlands William IV of Orange and his grandson William V of Orange.
Only in the constitution of 1813 was the island finally integrated into the Netherlands (into the province of Friesland). The kings and queens of the Netherlands still maintain the title Vrijheer van Ameland today.
In 1871 and 1872, a dike was built between Ameland and the mainland by a society for the reclamation of Frisian land from the sea. The dike ran from Holwerd to Bueren and was 8.7 km (5 mi). long. The province and the Dutch realm each paid 200,000 guilders. In the end, it was unsuccessful; the dike did not prove to be durable and in 1882, after heavy storms in the winter, repair and maintenance of the dam were stopped. The dike can still be partially seen at low tide. The dam at Holwerd is the beginning of this dike.
Jorwerd Fridsma journey the Dutch Landsmeer Fridsma connection by Dr Herman Fridsma ND 2003
Jorwerd Fridsma journey the Dutch Landsmeer Fridsma connection by Dr. Herman Fridsma ND (2003) is a private project of Dr. Herman Fridsma which is released for the public in 2015. The video movie is a short documentary of the journey of Meindert Fridsma (father of Herman Fridsma) to Jorwerd as part of roots of Fridsma. The journey shows the Netherlands in winter 2003 related to the Afsluitdijk where one could walk at the ice of the IJselmeer (former South Sea) and it shows Kornwerderzand where the Dutch military strongholds stopped the German invaders in May 1940 for days by hard battle. The movie shows Jorwerd and also the Wadden Sea. It’s an informational documentary as seen from out of the perspectives of a visitor in Friesland (Dutch province).
The Jorwerd Fridsma video documentary is all about family roots...
Have fun watching the short video documentary while following Fridsma at the journey to Jorwerd (Friesland, Netherlands) and notice the beauty of Friesland and especially Jorwerd. This was a nostalgic journey for Meindert Fridsma as part of his past. The documentary is kept original and uncut and is stated with English subtitles. Music is 1936 related to Wilhelm Kempff, Emperor Concert by Beethoven (Berliner Philamoniker).

Vrouwe Fortuna from Ameland to Lauwerszee
The owner of this video: Jaap Zeilemaker, very kindly allowed me to upload this video into Youtube. It is the second part of his DVD about the summertour with the traditional Dutch sailboat: Vrouwe Fortuna in August 2011, of which we both took part. The first and third parts are called: Vrouwe Fortuna from Lemmer to Ameland and Vrouwe Fortuna in Friesland.
In this part we are mostly on the Waddenzee, the inner sea in the North of our country, between the mainland and the row of islands. It is very shallow, large parts of it fall dry during low tide. With a flat bottom boat like the Vrouwe Fortuna, it is popular to anchor during high tide at such a shallow place and let it fall dry. Then you can step out of the boat and walk around on the Wad.

The Vrouwe Fortuna is a traditional Dutch sailing ship, originally used for freight. Now many of those old ships are used for pleasure. You see a lot of them on the larger lakes of our country, and the Waddenzee, the inner sea between the mainland and the islands in the North, of which Ameland is one.

HOLLAND: Lauwersoog / Lauwersmeer (port & lake), Groningen [HD]
Lauwersoog is a small village and fishing port in the northern province of Groningen. It is best known as the departure point for the ferry to the island Schiermonnikoog.
Nieuwe Robbengat is part of the Lauwersmeer, a man-made lake in the north of the Netherlands, on the border of the provinces of Groningen and Friesland. The lake was formed on 23 May 1969, when the dike between the bay called Lauwers Sea and the Wadden Sea was closed. It is noted for birdwatching.
Not far from Lauwersoog is the village Pieterburen. The village is known for the start of the Pieterpad, a long-distance hiking trail to Sint Pieter in the extreme south of the Netherlands.
