Burmese glass is a type of opaque colored art glass, shading from yellow to pink. It is found in either the rare original shiny finish or the more common satin finish. It is used for table glass and small, ornamental vases and dressing table articles.
It was made in 1885 by the Mount Washington Glass Company of New Bedford, Massachusetts, USA. Burmese glass found favor with Queen Victoria. From 1886, the British company of Thomas Webb & Sons was licensed to produce the glass. Their version, known as Queen's Burmeseware, which was used for tableware and decorative glass, often with painted decoration. Burmese was also made after 1970 by the Fenton art glass company.
Burmese is a uranium glass. The formula to produce Burmese Glass contains uranium oxide with tincture of gold added. The uranium oxide produced the inherent soft yellow color of Burmese glass. Because of the added gold, the characteristic pink blush of color of Burmese was fashioned by re-heating the object in the furnace (the Glory Hole). The length of time in the furnace will determine the intensity of the color. Strangely, if the object is subjected to the heat again, it will return to the original yellow color.
On the queen's visit to the United States, the Mount Washington glass company made for her a tea cup and saucer. When it was presented to her, she exclaimed, It looks like a Burmese sunset. That is where the name Burmese came from for the glass. The design painted on the cup and saucer by the famous Mt. Washington artist Timothy Canty became known as Queen's Burmese design. The Mount Washington Glass Company patented Queen's design Burmese, not Thomas Webb and Sons.

Davis and Kapple Glass
Summer 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the American Glass Studio Movement and to celebrate, the South Shore has two new glass artists in residence. Glass artists Joe Davis and Johnny Kapple create one of a kind hand blown contemporary glass art sculpture. Davis and Kapple have taken their combined experience in the art of glass blowing and opened a glass studio in Kingston, Massachusetts.
Davis interned with glass artist Bill Slade, aligning himself with a distinguished line of contemporary glass artists, as Slade was one of the very few artists ever to train under iconic Dominick Labino, co-founder with Harvey Littleton of the American Glass Studio Movement in 1962. Harvey Littleton and Dominick Labino's studio glass workshop was an idea at the right time says Glass Art Society President Jeremy Lepisto, who is quick to point out that, Over the last 50 years studio glass has not just grown, it has covered the globe. Glass in all its respects is now taught in universities. Davis has his BFA in Glass Art while Kapple minored in Glass. From Slade, Davis and Kapple learned the fine art of veiling. A veil is a silver coating that is applied to hot glass and then covered with clear glass, trapping the metallic veil which is suspended within the glass, a technique introduced to Slade by Labino.
Davis and Kapple also studied under Brian Frus, the former Director of Education at Urban Glass in New York City and alongside Andrew Erdos while in college.
They have received commissions for their art work from the State of Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and local businesses. They have received a local cultural grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Their works have appeared in the Alexander J. Brest Museum, Artist Exposure Gallery, Bancroft Gallery, Gallery 263, New Bedford Museum of Glass Broadfoot Gallery, Woodman-Shimko Gallery, Laughing Moon, and many other places. They have collaborated to make a contemporary art glass studio/gallery space for South Shore residents to enjoy.
The evolving glass studio is open to the public for live glass blowing demonstrations. Glass pieces are also available for purchase.

I-Team: Thousands of Massachusetts elevators haven't been inspected this year
When an elevator stops working, it's, at the very least, an inconvenience. But it's a huge problem for people who essentially get trapped on upper floors.

Milford, New Hampshire is a beautiful New England town that runs along the Souhegan River. Named after the Mill at the Ford on the Souhegan, Milford is a community that is proud of it's heritage. The town is centrally located at the junction of state routes 13, 101 and 101A, about 10 miles West of Nashua, 45 minutes north of Boston, MA
The town green, called the Milford Oval is at the heart of the community. Well maintained lawns and the restored antique bandstand recall another era. Residents meet and greet each other on the sidewalk, and a variety of unique stores, restaurants, craft stores and services line the streets. The brick walkways, period lighting, seasonal gardens and events such as the annual Labor Day parade, the Milford Farmer's Market and Milford Great Pumpkin Festival as well as Sounds of the Souhegan summer evening concert series, make the Milford Oval the centerpiece of the town.

Chances are you've never seen a wolf-coyote hybrid called the coywolf but it has arrived in New York. Meet the Coywolf, the latest documentary from PBS' Nature series, premiering on January 22 at 8pm on PBS stations nationwide, introduces us to the elusive canines. They originated in eastern Canada and are now emerging in New York City and on Long Island. Two wildlife biologists featured in the program, Mark Weckel of the American Museum of Natural History and Christopher Nagy of Mianus River Gorge Preserve, join Pi Roman to talk about tracking the hybrid species as part of their Gotham Coyote Project.
