Rottnest Island -- Thomson Bay
Thomson Bay is the biggest, and most popular bay, on
Rottnest Island, which is 19kms of the Perth coastline. Facing north-east, it looks back towards the Perth skyline, which on most days, provides a magnificent backdrop.
It was named after Robert Thomson, who became a major landholder on Rottnest Island during the 1830s when the island was considered to be a suitable for grazing and salt production.
The white sand beach of Thomson Bay stretch nearly 3km, curving round from Bathurst Point at the northern tip of the island to Natural Jetty, a tongue of Tamala limestone reef that stretches out from Phillip Point on the southeast corner of the island.
This magnificent bay, which is protected by reef to the east and is split into two sections by the main jetty, not only provides some beautiful, protected swimming areas but shelter from most breezes, making it an ideal anchorage. The only breeze that affects the bay is the offshore easterly that can turn normally crystal clear water quite murky and develop a nasty chop that makes on board living unpleasant.
Thompson Bay is also where the public ferries that service Rottnest from Fremantle and Hillarys arrive and depart and where you’ll find the island’s historic settlement. It is a busy bay, with five jetties, a water playground, and hundreds of moorings, ensuring there is plenty to see and do.

Parker Point, Rottnest Island
Parker Point, located on the south-east end of Rottnest Island, is a breathtaking bay that has been named one of Australia’s best beaches.
As a boating destination it is the perfect anchorage with crystal clear waters and white, white sand. But be warned it is also one of the most popular bays on the island and during peak season can become extremely busy. There are no moorings in Parkers Point and you cannot book space in the bay it operates on a first come first served basis.
But if you are lucky enough to visit during the week, or out of the traditional summer holiday period, you may get to experience a slice of paradise on your own, or with just a few neighbours spread out over the vast bay.
From Thomson Bay it is a fairly short trip and, providing the south-westerly breeze is not blowing too strong, a calm and enjoyable one.
You need to head in a southerly direction from Thomson Bay passing between Phillip Rock and Natural Jetty (Phillip Point), there are lateral marks to guide you through.
After passing out into unprotected waters you need to ensure that you head in a south-westerly direction out around Twin Rocks, Wallace Island and Dyer Island. In the right swell waves will break in this area so it is always better to go too wide than try and cut the corner.
The navigation leads into Parker Point line-up on 300.4deg on your compass. It is important to stay on the line as entry into the bay is via an unmarked channel with reef on either side.
Once you enter the bay it is a long sand channel that runs parallel with the beach.
While it is open to the south-westerly breeze, or infamous Fremantle Doctor, which blows up around 20-25 knots with regular monotony, it is regarded as an all-weather anchorage because of the surrounding reef that dispels any swell and creates a protected anchorage.

Rottnest - Beaches & Bays
Rottnest Island is located 18 kilometres (11 mi) off the Western Australian coast, near Fremantle. It is called Wadjemup by the Noongar people, meaning place across the water. The island is 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) long, and 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi) at its widest point. Its total land area is 19 square kilometres (7.3 sq mi). Rottnest Island has been a popular local holiday destination for over 50 years.
The Western Australian vernacular diminutive is Rotto, or Rottnest.[2]
In 1917 Rottnest Island was declared an A-Class Reserve under the Permanent Reserve Act 1899 and the Rottnest Board of Control was formed, known today as the Rottnest Island Authority. No private ownership of land is allowed. The authority collects revenue by imposing a landing fee on all visitors to the island as well as managing holiday rental accommodation.

Rottnest Island (Western Australia)
Rottnest Island is 18 kms off the Western Australian Coast from Perth. The Island measures 11 Km Long, 4.5 Km Long and has a surface area of 19 square Kms. The Island is home to a unique species of marsupial called Quokkas.
There are 2 main settlements on the Island: Thomson Bay and Geordie Bay. There are 308 cottages on the Island for rental and accomodation for 2,850 people. With day visitors, the Island's population can swell to 5,000 in the busy summer months of the year.
Rocky Bay - Rottnest Island
In the far north-western corner of Rottnest Island, 19kms off the coast of Perth in WA, in the vicinity of Narrowneck – a narrow stretch of land where you can see the ocean to the north and south from the top of the sandhills, are three relatively secluded bays. Rocky Bay, Marjorie Bay and Stark Bay. All have moorings and all are very popular in the summer season. For those who frequent these bays, which are all interconnecting, it’s their isolation from Thomson Bay, the main hub of the island, that is the major attraction.
Leaving from Thomson Bay you head in a northerly direction staying between the moorings and Transit bank. While you have reef on one side and shallow sand banks and reef on the other they are all easily visible so it is a relatively easy trip over a stunning piece of crystal clear water. You are also restricted to five knots until you pass the clear water to the north cardinal marker at Mushroom Rock. From there you need to head in north-westerly direction staying to the east of Duck Rock. Once in open waters it is open speed limit all the way to Rocky Bay.
On a good day the water on this side of the island is like a millpond. On a bad day, when a strong south-westerly breeze is blowing and the swell is up it can be extremely rough. Navigation into the bays is also quite tricky and treacherous, especially for the inexperienced so it needs care and caution.
