Northeast Asia Peace Festival: gateway to S. Korea-China economic cooperation
동북아평화페스티벌,... 한중 문화교류에서 경제협력으로
Over the weekend, Harbin, China... hosted the 2018 Northeast Asia Peace Festival.
This year the highlight was a competition for amateur models from four different countries.
According to the organizers it was more than just about cultural exchange.
Hong Yoo takes us to the renowned 'Ice City'.
Thousands of people have gathered in Harbin to watch a contest for models from four countries -- South Korea, China, Japan, and Russia.
With pose after pose, they showed off their individual beauty as representatives of their countries.
From July 27th to 30th, the Northeast Asia Economic Cooperation Committee held the 2018 Northeast Asia Peace Festival.
By displaying their countries' traditional clothes, the models were part of an international cultural exchange, and a big one.
As a whole, the festival attracted around 300,000 visitors.
I'm not looking for a special prize out of this competition. I'm happy just to have participated in it and made new friends.
To be honest, the language barrier made it hard to communicate with the other models, but the fact that we all have the same goal helped us bond quickly.
The festival was about more than the model contest. It also opened up the doors to South Korean mid-size companies to expand their business to China.
A special booth was set up for them to let people know what they're doing.
This time there were two South Korean companies taking part.
One of them was a cosmetics brand,... riding the wave of Korean beauty products that've become famous all over the world.
The cosmetics market in South Korea is pretty limited, so we wanted to expand our business to the global market. And through this festival we were able to do that by introducing our products to many people here.
The South Korean committee that helped organize the event thinks its cultural exchanges will help provide job opportunities to young people and help export Korean goods to China.
It's usually hard for Korean brands to get a spot in a Chinese department store, and when they do, they don't tend to last long. So we are helping South Korean enterprises to get their products into the stores here.
The committee chairman added that North Korea also wants to be part of the Northeast Asia Economic Cooperation Committee, and the process is underway. He commented that the North's participation would allow South Korean enterprises to expand their business in Asia, using the easier land route.
This festival, which aims at boosting South Korea and China’s cooperation in culture, economics and other fields, will next take place in Seoul in 2019. And hopefully, the participation of North Korea next year will further strengthen regional ties.

More Chinese and Japanese tourists expected in Korea with public holidays
노동절 연휴, 골든위크 맞아 중국인/일본인 관광객 증가 예정
More Japanese and Chinese tourists are expected to come to Korea this week as both countries have extended public holidays.
Officials say China has a three-day weekend thanks to Labor Day celebrations.
Japan is currently on its ten-day-long Golden Week holiday.
To prepare for the uptick in tourists from those countries,... Korea's main gateway, Incheon International Airport, has increased the number of immigration counters to shorten waiting times and opened check-in counters 30 minutes earlier than normal.
More staff have also been brought in to duty-free stores.
Last year, 100-thousand Chinese tourists visited Korea during the Labor Day public holiday.
Seventy-three thousand Japanese tourists came during the golden week.

Since the water has come back we're a bit worried, but we have to trust the government. We're a bit worried, we're scared to drink it. We have to wait a little bit longer, and let it run through more first.

STORYLINE:
Residents of a major Chinese city had running water restored to their homes on Sunday five days after a chemical spill in a nearby river forced a shutdown.
Water supplies resumed in Harbin at 6 pm (1000GMT) - about five hours earlier than planned - after tests showed a spill of toxic benzene in the Songhua River had passed the city, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
Harbin resident Cao Shi Jun said his wife discovered that their water supply was back on at around 10pm local time (1400gmt) on Sunday.
Officials have warned that the tap water will not immediately be safe to drink - even if boiled.
The deputy general manager of the Harbin water department said the government will cut water fees in order to encourage the public to use water as quickly as possible over the next few days to flush out the old supply.
Earlier on Sunday, Liu Yurun, general manager for the Harbin Water Group, said radio and television stations will broadcast a colour-based indicator of water safety - red for unusable, yellow for bathing only and green for drinking.
Cao said he and his wife know that they're not supposed to drink the water yet, and that they should watch for government advisories on local television broadcasts.
So far, local television has not broadcast any of the three coloured signals.
Cao says he's glad that the water is back on, but still he's worried about the potential effects of the pollution on the water he uses every day.
Harbin shut down its water system on Tuesday following an explosion on November 13 at a chemical plant upstream that the government said poisoned the river with about 100 tonnes of benzene.
The shutdown forced Harbin residents to rely on bottled drinking water and line up in freezing weather to get supplies from trucks.
The government has promised to investigate the disaster and punish officials found responsible.

Shenyang ([ʂə̀n.jǎŋ]; Chinese: 沈阳), formerly known by its Manchu name Mukden or Fengtian (Chinese: 奉天; pinyin: Fèngtiān), is the provincial capital and the largest city of Liaoning Province, People's Republic of China, as well as the largest city in Northeast China by urban population. According to the 2010 census, the city's urban area has 6.3 million inhabitants, while the total population of the Shenyang municipality, which holds the administrative status of a sub-provincial city, is up to 8.1 million. Shenyang is also the center city of one of the major metropolitan areas in China, the Greater Shenyang Metro Area, with a total population over 23 million. The city’s region includes the ten metropolitan districts of Shenyang proper, the county-level city of Xinmin, and two counties of Kangping and Faku.
In the 17th century, Shenyang was conquered by the Manchu people and briefly used as the capital of the Qing dynasty. The Battle of Mukden took place in 1905 as part of the Russo-Japanese War. Japan's subsequent victory allowed them to increase their influence on Shenyang; the Mukden Incident led the Japanese to further invade and occupy the rest of Northeast China, creating the puppet state of Manchukuo. Shenyang remained a Kuomintang stronghold after Japan's defeat, but was captured by the communists in 1948.
Along with its nearby cities, Shenyang is an important industrial center in China, and serves as the transportation and commercial hub of China's northeast—particularly with Japan, Russia and Korea. A center of heavy industry in China since the 1930s, and the spearhead of the Chinese central government's Northeast Area Revitalization Plan, the city has been diversifying its industry, including expanding into the service sector. Growing industries include software, automotive and electronics.

SUMMARY
=======
War crimes perpetrated by the Soviet Union and its armed forces from 1919 to 1991 include acts committed by the Red Army (later called the Soviet Army) as well as the NKVD, including the NKVD's Internal Troops. In some cases, these acts were committed upon the orders of the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in pursuance of the early Soviet Government's policy of Red Terror, in other instances they were committed without orders by Soviet troops against prisoners of war or civilians of countries that had been in armed conflict with the USSR, or they were committed during partisan warfare.A significant number of these incidents occurred in Northern, Central, and Eastern Europe before, during and in the aftermath of World War II, involving summary executions and the mass murder of prisoners of war, such as in the Katyn massacre and mass rape by troops of the Red Army in territories they occupied.
When the Allied Powers of World War II founded the post-war International Military Tribunal to examine war crimes committed during the conflict by Nazi Germany, with officials from the Soviet Union taking an active part in the judicial processes, there was no examination of Soviet Forces' actions and no charges were ever brought against its troops, because they were also an undefeated power which then held Eastern Europe under military occupation, marring the historical authority of the Tribunal's activity as being, in part, victor's justice.Today, the Russian government regularly dismisses the war crimes as Western myth. In Russian history textbooks, the atrocities are either altered to portray the Soviets positively or omitted entirely. In a June 2017 interview, Russian president Vladimir Putin acknowledged the horrors of Stalinism, but he also criticized the excessive demonization of Stalin by Russia's enemies.
