Český Krumlov - Чески-Крумлов
Český Krumlov is a small city in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic where Český Krumlov Castle is located. Old Český Krumlov is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was given this status along with the historic Prague castle district.
Construction of the town and castle began around 1240 by the Vítkovci at a ford in the Vltava River, at an important trade route in Bohemia. It was first mentioned in 1253 as Chrumbenowe. A legend says that the name derives from the German Krumme Aue which can be translated as crooked meadow.
In 1302 the town and castle were acquired by the House of Rosenberg. The majority of inhabitants were German at that time. For 1336 it can be expected that Czechs were only a small minority, who had their own priest.
In late 15th century, when gold was found next to the town, German miners came to settle, which shifted the ethnic balance even more. In the parochial church the sermons were preached in Czech until 1788, when St. Jošt Church was abolished.
Emperor Rudolf II bought Krumlov in 1602 and gave it to his natural son Julius d’Austria. Emperor Ferdinand II gave Krumlov to the House of Eggenberg and the town was seat of Duchy of Krumlov. From 1719 until 1945 the castle belonged to the House of Schwarzenberg. Most of the architecture of the old town and castle dates from the 14th through 17th centuries; the town's structures are mostly in Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The core of the old town is within a horseshoe bend of the river, with the old Latrán neighborhood and castle on the other side of the Vltava.
8,662 inhabitants lived in Krummau an der Moldau in 1910, including 7,367 Germans and 1,295 Czechs.
After the First World War the city was part of the Bohemian Forest Region which declared to be part of German-Austria. By the end of 1918 the Czechoslovak army occupied the region. During the interwar era it was part of Czechoslovakia. In 1938 it was annexed by Nazi Germany, as part of the Sudetenland according to the Munich agreement. Between 1938 and 1945 it was part of the Reichsgau Oberdonau. After World War II the town's longstanding German-speaking population was expelled and it was returned to Czechoslovakia.
During the Communist era of Czechoslovakia, Krumlov fell into disrepair, but since the Velvet Revolution of 1989 much of the town's former beauty has been restored, and it is now a major holiday destination popular with tourists from Germany, Austria and beyond, as far as China. In August, 2002, the town suffered from damage in the great flood of the Vltava River.

Historic Center of Cesky Krumlov in Brno, Czech Republic
Český Krumlov is a town in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. Its historic centre, centred around the Český Krumlov Castle, has been a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992 and was given this status along with the historic Prague castle district.
The town's name begins with Český (Bohemian) to differentiate it from Moravský Krumlov in south Moravia.
The settlement arose beneath the castle, which was built from about 1240 onwards by a local branch of the noble Vítkovci family, descendants of Witiko of Prčice. The fortress was first mentioned in a 1253 deed as Chrumbenowe. According to local legend, the name derives from Middle High German krumbe ouwe which can be translated as crooked meadow, after a bend of the Vltava River. It was also mentioned in the 1255 Frauendienst poem by minnesinger Ulrich von Liechtenstein. Located at a ford of an important trade route in the Kingdom of Bohemia, a settlement arose soon afterwards below the castle. The Czech name Krumlov is documented as early as in 1259.
In 1302 the Vítkovci line became extinct and King Wenceslaus II ceded the town and castle to the Rosenberg family (Rožmberkové). Peter I of Rosenberg, the Lord Chamberlain of King John of Bohemia, resided here and had the present upper castle erected in the early 14th century. The majority of inhabitants were German-speaking at that time, having migrated from neighbouring Austria and Bavaria in the course of the Ostsiedlung. A Jewish community is documented since 1334. By 1336, Czechs may have formed a small minority, which had its own priest.
The Rosenbergs strongly promoted trade and crafts within the town walls. In the late 15th century, when gold was found next to the town, German miners came to settle, which shifted the ethnic balance even more. In one of the churches the sermons were preached in Czech until 1788, when St. Jošt Church was closed. William of Rosenberg (1535–1592), High Treasurer and High Burgrave of Bohemia, had the castle rebuilt in a Renaissance style.
In 1602 William's brother Peter Vok of Rosenberg (1539–1611) sold Krumlov to the Habsburg emperor Rudolf II, who gave it to his natural son Julius d'Austria. After the Bohemian Revolt and the 1620 Battle of White Mountain, Emperor Ferdinand II gave Krumlov to the noble House of Eggenberg and the town became seat of the mediate[clarification needed] Duchy of Krumlov. From 1719 until 1947 the castle belonged to the House of Schwarzenberg.
There were 8,662 inhabitants in Krummau an der Moldau in 1910, including 7,367 Germans and 1,295 Czechs. By the end of 1918 the Czechoslovak army had occupied the region, which became part of Czechoslovakia. In 1938 it was annexed by Nazi Germany, as part of the Reichsgau Oberdonau unit of Sudetenland under the Munich agreement. After World War II the town's long-standing German-speaking population was expelled and the town was returned to Czechoslovakia.
During the Communist era of Czechoslovakia, historic Krumlov fell into disrepair, but since the Velvet Revolution of 1989 much of the town's former beauty has been restored, and it is now a popular holiday destination, with large numbers of tourists from Europe and from Asian countries such as China and Japan. In August 2002, the town was damaged in a great flood of the Vltava River.
Castle
Český Krumlov Castle is unusually large for a town of its size; within the Czech Republic it is second in extent only to the Hradčany castle complex of Prague. Inside its grounds are a large rococo garden, an extensive bridge over a deep gap in the rock upon which the castle is built, and the castle itself, which in turn consists of many defined parts dating from different periods. After the garden had been inadequately maintained in the second half of the 20th century, the site was included in the 1996 World Monuments Watch by the World Monuments Fund. With financial support from American Express the garden's central fountain was documented and reconstructed, and remains functional today.
It is relatively unique in that it is surrounded by a moat filled not with water, but with bears. This was an attempt the erstwhile rulers of the castle to associate themselves with the powerful Orsini family - whose name is a pun on the Italian word for bear; orso.

15 of Europe’s Most Beautiful Villages
From the gorgeous island Bermuda, to charming tourist destinations, here are
15 of the most beautiful villages you should visit! Subscribe for weekly wacky videos and learn interesting facts about the world with awesome top 10 lists and other amazing videos.
7 - Caleta, Chile - Caleta Tortel is a scenic coastal village located in Chile. It is situated between the mouth of the Baker River, Chile’s largest, and the Baker Channel embayment. The magnificent coastline is surrounded by rugged geography including a number of channels, fjords, and islands. The town itself consists of a number of stilt houses built along the coast. However its most unique feature is that the town contains no roadways. Instead, wooden walkways connect the village, giving it its distinctive look and feel.
6 - Niagra-on-the-Lake, Canada – Niagra-on-the-Lake is located in Southern Ontario Canada. It can be found right where Niagra River meets Lake Ontario and is just across Niagra River from Youngstown New York. Originally called Butlersburg when it was settled in 1781, this town is known for many of its restored military sites, such as Fort George, Butler’s Barracks and Navy Hall. Niagra-on-the-Lake is also attributed to starting many of the province’s institutions, for example the first newspaper, historical museum and parliament. One of the highlights for tourists is the Shaw Festival, which is a showcase of theatrical performances of George Bernard Shaw’s work. It uses three theaters in town and hosts some of the most talented actors and directors.
5 – Shirakawa-go, Japan - The village of Shirakawa-go in Japan is a UNESCO world heritage site, located in the Shogawa river valley. The village if best known for the architecture of its houses, which were built in the gassho-zukuri style. Gassho-Zukuri, or “prayer-hands construction” houses are characterized by their steeply slanting thatched roofs, which resemble two hands joined together in prayer. This design is exceptionally strong, which is necessary to withstand the cold and heavy snowfalls the village receives during the winter months. These large houses, three to four stories tall, are built to house large extended families. The houses are also surrounded by densely forested mountains that occupy over 90% of the available landmass and present unsurpassed views.
4 - Hallstatt, Austria - Hallstatt is a small alpine village, located in Salzkammergut, a region in upper Austria. It is named due to its proximity to the nearby Hallstatt Lake. The town’s claim to fame is that it contains the “world’s oldest pipeline”, which was constructed in the early 1600’s from 13,000 hollowed out trees. Up until the late 19th century, the only way to access Hallstatt was by boat, as the town consumed every available inch of free land between the mountains. Despite its remote location, the area has been home to one of the first human settlements,
3 – Eze, France - The village of Eze, located in France, extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the neighboring mountains. It was founded around 600 BC by shepherds who created a settlement. Part of the French Riviera, this small medieval village is famous for its beauty and charm and is world
2 - Kastelorizo Island, Greece – Kastelorizo Island is located on the Mediterranean Sea and has become a popular tourist spot in recent years. This spike in tourism is partly due to the 1991 Oscar-winning film, Mediterraneo being filmed there. The most eastern of the Greek islands, Katelorizo is primarily limestone and because it has little plant life, the result is many beautiful sea caves. The houses of the island are skinny and are recognized by their wooden balconies overlooking the water. The culture and
traditions on the island are influenced largely by Muslim customs.
1 - Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic – Known as the “Castle City” of the Czech Republic, Cesky Krumlov is a medieval village with winding roads that twist around the Cesky Krumlov castle. The castle and town was constructed in 1240 and old Czech legend translates the name to mean “crooked meadow.” German miners began settling in the village in the late 15th century when gold was found near the town. It fell into disrepair during the Communist era of Czechoslovakia, but the beauty has since been restored since the Velvet Revolution of 1989.

EUROPE TRAVEL VLOG #16: Cesky Krumlov pt 1/2 - Looking for Ghosts in Cesky Krumlov
Follow me as we spend 24 hours in Cesky Krumlov. Cesky Krumlov was an easy 3 hour bus ride from Prague. We couldn't believe how romantic and magical this UNESCO heritage town is. The first thing we did after checking in was go have a delicious Bohemian feast of rabbit and pheasant (meats that we don't usually eat) before we set off to explore the town. It was fun to aimlessly walk around without having to worry about safety and getting lost. We discovered many interesting sites along the way, including the famous St Vitus Church. At night we joined a ghost tour and heard many spine-tingling stories about this medieval town.
This year I decided to quit my job to go travelling with my sister and boyfriend. Subscribe to see footage from our travels. First stop: Europe & South Korea. 21 cities in 11 countries later, here is some footage I captured.

Things to do in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic (Carlsbad)........
The town of Karlovy Vary is located in the western part of the Czech Republic at the confluence of the rivers Teplá and Ohře (Eger), about 120 km from Prague. It is the largest and most famous spa town in the Czech Republic. The town was founded in the 14th century by Charles IV. According to a legend, the emperor had it built soon after the accidental discovery of thermal springs by his hunting companions. The spa enjoyed the favour of many noble families and wealthy townsmen already in the 16th century. Due to the series of natural disasters only a few buildings from that time have survived. Most of the landmarks originate from the 18th and 19th century, when the town experienced its golden days. The town hosts innumerable cultural and sports events throughout the entire year. Many became popular among the Karlovy Vary public and tourists. One of the most popular social events is the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which every year attracts the film fans from around the world. But the films are not only screened here. Thanking to its unique environment and architecture, Karlovy Vary has been used as a shooting location for well-known films. For example, lately it was James Bond: Casino Royale.

Rondels (mysterious neolithic circular enclosures in Central Europe)
Rondely (mystické stavby pravekej Európy)
Approximately 120--150 Neolithic earthworks enclosures are known in Central Europe. They are called Kreisgrabenanlagen (circular ditched enclosures) in German, or alternatively as roundels (or rondels; German Rondelle; sometimes also rondeloid, since many are not even approximately circular). They are mostly confined to the Elbe and Danube basins, in modern-day Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, as well as the adjacent parts of Hungary and Poland, in a stretch of Central European land some 800 km (500 mi) across.[2] They date to the first half of the 5th millennium BC; they are associated with the late Linear Pottery culture and its local successors, the Stroke-ornamented ware (Middle Danubian) and Lengyel (Moravian Painted Ware) cultures. The best known and oldest of these Circular Enclosures is the Goseck circle, constructed c. 4900 BC.
Místo setkání a obchodu (tj. výměny) → Společenský
Místo společné práce, která zceluje společnost → Sociální
Místo pro provozování her [1]
(rondel v Bučanech) a PhDr. Rudolfa Irša (rondel v Holíči).
V roce 2013 vydal experimentální bubeník a skladatel Lucas Perny sólový album The Rondel, kterí byl inspirován rondelmi, o kterých psal také svou vědeckou práci.
Music: Lucas Perny - The Rondel, Studio P, 2013 (tracks Zeuhl Tendiwa Udea, Ritual, Moonlight Lullaby Of Lengyel Culture)
