Japanese Knife & Sword City: Seki Experience ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Traveling for KNIVES and SWORDS! The Japanese knife is quite simply the best in the world. The place best known for them is Seki (関市) in Gifu where Japanese Samurai swords have been forged for over 700 years. That tradition continues today in its knives and cutlery. They're perfect.
Following World War 2, the city changed from forging the katana to producing some of the world's best knives and cutlery. So, I ended up at Seki Station recently -- to buy the best knife in Japan! Maybe even a samurai sword, too.
In this episode, John travels to Seki city in Gifu prefecture to check out the CUTLERY FESTIVAL known as the HAMONO MATSURI (刃物まつり) in Japan. Now only will you find over 43 knife makers selling their best at discounted prices, you'll see the most unique knives anywhere as well as Chanbara performances (Samurai Sword Fight Acting).
The most unique part of the Hamono Festuval is an authentic demonstration of traditional sword forging using Tamahagane Steel.
HOW MUCH IS A REAL SAMURAI SWORD?
They start at 400,000 to 600,000 Yen ($4,000 to $6000) and can go up to $20,000! We'll see swords being made in Seki.
HOW TO BUY A JAPANESE KNIFE:
There many things to consider such as the type of steel, the type of knife, it's balance and of course, it's price.
WHEN IS SEKI'S HAMONO CUTLERY FESTIVAL ( 刃物まつり ) ?
2019 October 12th and 13th (Saturday & Sunday)
URL: (English available)
* It takes place on the second weekend of October annually.
The knife I bought:
Mcusta ZANMAI Classic Pro Damascus Flame
Santoku 180mm ¥15,000 Festival Price
Hida Beef (Hida Gyu 飛騨牛) is one of Japan's top wagyu beef and worth trying in Gifu or the Nagoya area.
HOW TO GET TO SEKI:
Best is to rent a car. It's easiest to get around this way because trains don't leave often in the countryside and many places like Monet's Pond can be accessed only by infrequent buses.
By Train, it's a short and scenic ride from Nagoya Station or Gifu Station.

THANK YOU!
I want to say ARIGATOU GOZAIMASU to Seki city and the wonderful people who helped me make this special episode. If you are interested in Seki, please check out their sightseeing page and feel free to contact them. They really want you to enjoy their hometown! -john
What is Damascus Steel?
Mr. Walter Sorrells made an excellent video on YouTube explaining it. I also learned more about knife making from his channel.

Hyper Japan Christmas Market 2016 - Sunday - with Dan
This vlog is the final one from HJ this winter. We got to see the CosTest, which was pretty cool. My one regret this year is that I didn't get to see many performances, but we did get to see a bit of The Hoopers performing.
Looking forward to the next Hyper Japan!

The Japanese city of Susaki cut ties with their unofficial otter mascot, Chiitan, leaving their official otter mascot, Shinjo-kun, all alone. So we came up with a plan to help.

JANICE WONG - The Kochi, Japan Prefecture Tour | Wanderspiel Presents
WANDERSPIEL tours Japan's Kochi Prefecture for a unique travel insight with JANICE WONG, celebrated pastry chef from Singapore of 2:am dessert bar fame, with her namesake 'Janice Wong Dessert Bar' present in Tokyo, Macau and Singapore.
Janice's trip objective was to be inspired - through a cultural immersion, across a multitude of facets of the Kochi Prefecture in Japan.
The Kochi Prefecture has plenty of offer - from drinking the source-to-table tea at Kunitomo Tea Plantation to understanding tradition at Paper Museum Inocho, and hand-made wooden products at Tosaryu.
Naturally, taste is imperative to Chefs.
Wanderspiel captures an array of tasting experiences, from an array of Finger Lime, to meeting the farmers and tasting the unique-to-Kochi citruses (the Naoshichi and Buntan)at the Naoshichi Farm and Shiraki Orchard Buntan Farmer.
Witnessing mornings at Sukumo Fish Market and the processes at the Takeuchi Dried Bonito Factory were other key highlights, with the tour ending at Hokiyama Cutlery, where exquisite Japanese knives are made.
One thing for sure - Janice did draw much inspiration from the majestic surroundings of Kochi, in sight, sound, smell and her tactile interaction with the immediate environment around her.
What a beautiful place, Kochi Japan、素晴らしすぎるぜ、高知県

TREASURES OF KOCHI Part I
Kochi Prefecture lies on the south shore of Shikoku, one of the four main islands of Japan. Kochi is a mountainous prefecture. Over eighty percent of its area is forested, the highest percentage of any Japanese prefecture. With the Pacific Ocean spreading along its coastline, Kochi is also a maritime prefecture.
The constant presence of the vast ocean has an enormous effect on the spirit of the people of Kochi. Ryoma Sakamoto is a Kochi-born hero of the creation of modern Japan who, in an era when Japan had shut itself off from the world, always looked outward and wanted Japan to be open to foreign influences. Openness to outside cultural influences and a tolerant attitude go to the heart of the Kochi character. Accepting those foreign influences, the people of Kochi adapt them to their own natural surroundings and conditions, creating a living culture of their own.
With its unique atmosphere and lifestyle, as well as its beautiful ocean, mountains, and abundant local products, Kochi is like a giant treasure chest. These Treasures of Kochi will be introduced in Parts I to IV.

Exploring Kochi on the island of Shikoku, Japan
We visited Kochi, Japan as it was one of the ports that we stopped at on our cruise from Tokyo to Korea. Kochi City has one of Japan’s most beautiful castles that dates back to the1600s. This was the main attraction in Kochi and we spent several hours exploring the castle grounds and taking in the beauty. It was cherry blossom season and the grounds were filled with cherry blossoms and were perfectly landscaped.
Kochi is located on the island of Shikoku in Japan and is fairly easily accessed. The surrounding waters are crystal clear blue and there are clean rivers you can swim in as well. It’s possible to kayak or or white water raft in the rivers of Kochi. There is also great snorkelling and it’s possible to see whales and dolphins there if your lucky.
Kochi has plenty of beautiful hikes where you can see and experience waterfalls and caves. Niyodo River is one of the cleanest rivers in all of Japan, you can hike through the Nakatu Gorge for this experience. We recommend checking out Uryu falls, it’s a free experience and absolutely beautiful.

Originally from Vancouver, Canada we started an activewear business with nothing but a $5,000 credit card. Over 5 years we grew to over a million dollars in sales, and had our products sold in hundreds of stores, we were featured on Dragons Den, Bloomberg and much more! As the business grew it was becoming more stressful, and more expensive to keep up with the growth. In April 2019 we decided that we had enough and decided to sell everything and travel the world in search of adventure, happiness and new experiences. We started this YouTube channel to share our memories with family and friends, and even more so as a way to document our memories for ourselves! We are travelling FULL TIME as of June 2019, and we hope you will follow along our journey!
