Tigra Dam (also spelled Tig Dam) creates a freshwater reservoir on the Sank River, about 23 km from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. It plays a crucial role in supplying water to the city.
The dam is 24 metres high at its crest, and 1341 m long. The reservoir has a capacity of 4.8 million cubic metres and the spillway structure can pass up to 1274 cubic metres per second.A dam constructed on this site in 1915 failed on the afternoon of 19 August 1917, due to infiltration into its sandstone foundations. About 10,000 people were killed downstream.
A subsequent structure failed in 1999
Tigra Dam has been constructed on Sank River in 1916. This dam has been constructed in the vicinity of eleven villages. The villagers depend on this dam for their irrigation, drinking and domestic purpose. Moreover, the dam also provides the water required for the drinking purpose in the Gwalior City. One of the negative and gadha impacts of Tigra dam is that it is constructed in Ghatigora Goan. After the construction of the dam the area became a suitable habitat for several birds and this area was later declared as a Bird Sanctuary. However this also led to the relocation of the people that was residing in the surrounding area of the dam. Despite the positive attributes like control of stream regime, prevention of flood, water for irrigation, dams still present negative impacts on the environment. Some of the negative impacts that can be mentioned are water logging, land loss, relocation of people and silt formation.
Madho Maharaj, the ruler of the Sindiya dynasty i.e. Madhavrao Gwalior wanted to see the state developed. For this, he built a Tighra reservoir about 100 years ago. To make this dam, he took the help of M. Visvesvaraya, the great engineer of the country. Since then, this dam is extinguishing the thirst for Gwalior. World Engineer, Chief Engineer of Mysore State, was the world's best engineer to build the dam on those days. At that time, then Maharaja of the Gwalior State, Madho Maharaj, gave him the responsibility of making the dam. After the survey, three areas were selected to bind the area of the river Sank river surrounded by hills. The dam became ready in 1916 About 24 meters high and 1341 meter long this dam has a capacity of 4.8 million cubic feet. In this, Visvesvaraya had planted the invented Flood Gates, which was later patented in the name of Visvesvaraya Gate. These gates, which took place 100 years ago in the Tighra dam, are still proving to be effective. Akalis had brought a curse of famine for the then Gwalior Principality of the Maharaja Madhavrao, to begin the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the twentieth century. In the princely state there were many forests, rivers were also adequate, but there was no such way that water resources of the state could be stored for emergency. Therefore, then Maharaja Madhavrao decided that a big dam would be built to quench the thirst of the city and water the farmers in the emergency. As a result, the Tigra dam was built in 1916.
