Cape L'Agulhas - The Southern Most Tip of Africa
Check out Inspired Risk's first feature-length documentary:
L'Agulhas is the most southern coastal village and holiday resort in Africa, located within the Cape Agulhas Municipal area at the southernmost tip of the African mainland. It is situated next to the town of Struisbaai and about 30 kilometres south of the regional centre of Bredasdorp. The name Agulhas, Portuguese for needles, is said to have been given to the cape because the compass-needle was seen to point due north, that is, with no magnetic deviation. The Agulhas Bank is reputed to be the richest fishing area in the Southern Hemisphere. Some of the older residents and documents refer to the town as by its former name Cape Agulhas or Cape L'Agulhas or simply Agulhas which were the names that referred to this town before it was changed to L'Agulhas to avoid confusion when the Bredasdorp Municipality changed its name to The Cape Agulhas Municipality.
Tourist interests and activities include: A visit to the Lighthouse with a view from the tower and a walkway along the seafront to the new most southern African monument and a place where two oceans meet at the foot of Africa. A little further along the walkway is the shipwreck of Meisho Maru. Tourists also enjoy the local fyhbos plants, bird watching, hiking, swimming in the local tidal pools or a game of Jukskei on Saturday mornings. Other interests are visiting arts and craft shops, local wine sales, shops and restaurants or enjoy a meal at one of the best local fish restaurants in the area. L’Agulhas is a peaceful town and a ‘get away’ from busy city living.

Giant short tail stingrays at Struisbaai harbour, South Africa
Struisbaai is a small harbour town near Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa, in the Overberg region of the Western Cape province of South Africa. A pair of giant short tail stingrays are resident in the harbour area, and when the fishermen return with their catch, the rays come to feed on any scraps. They are habituated to the sounds of boat engines, and while we were at the harbour they came to see whether a private fishing boat that arrived back from a trip had anything for them to eat. We didn't have any fish for them, so they didn't sick around for long! The larger of the two rays (hard to tell which one in this video) is named Parrie, and has been resident in the harbour for some time.

History of Struisbaai.
The history of South Africa saw approximately 150 shipwrecks that dot its coastline and these are found predominantly around the most southern tip of Africa at L’Agulhas. It’s fierce and treacherous history is similar to its reef which would eventually give birth to its name.
Tools found in the area date back to over a million years ago, having been made in the Early Stone Age. Fish traps and middens in the area leads us to believe that San and Khoekhoen people used to inhabit this region due to the abundant waters.
The exact discovery of Struisbaai and L’Agulhas seems, however, to be a subject of debate. For Struisbaai it is a debate over the exact origins of the name. The name supposedly has three origins, the first of which is accredited to the straw (“strooi” in Afrikaans) roofs of the fishermen cottages. Another possibility is the ostriches (“struisvogel” in Dutch) that used to roam here, while others believe the name was derived from an old Dutch word meaning “huge” due to the long stretches of beach. For L’Agulhas however, it was the establishment of the town that draws heavy debates. It is believed that L’Agulhas was discovered in the early 1400’s by the Portuguese and finally on 16 May 1488 Bartholomew Dias named the most southern point of Africa after St Agulhas. The southernmost tip was christened Cabo dos Agulhas (Cape of Needles) by the Portuguese, but French influence later turned it to L’Agulhas. As time went by, this version of the name was forgotten, but during the restoration of the Lighthouse the old name was once again reinstated and accepted by the National Names Commission.
History of Hermanus, Western Cape South Africa.
Hermanus (originally called Hermanuspietersfontein, but shortened in 1902 as the name was too long for the postal service [2]), is a town on the southern coast of the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is famous for southern right whale watching during the southern winter and spring and is a popular retirement location. The whales can be seen from the cliffs in the town centre as early as June and usually depart in early-December. They were once hunted in the nearby town of Betty's Bay, but are now protected to ensure the survival of the species. The Old Harbour Museum in Hermanus contains several exhibitions that explain the whaling industry, and the De Wetshuis Photo Museum houses an exhibition of photos by T. D. Ravenscroft that depicts the history of Hermanus. The Whale Museum houses a skeleton of a whale and shows an audio-visual presentation of whales and dolphins twice daily.

Little black dog at Struisbaai
Struisbaai is a small harbour town near Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa, in the Overberg region of the Western Cape province of South Africa. One of the locals has a small black dog whose favourite game is retrieving pebbles from the tiny shore break next to the jetty. We played this game with him for a short while when we passed by!

ShiftingGear
A video showcasing the processes and actitivites leading to the development and implementation of the Small-Scale Fisheries Policy.
The video is produced by the UCT's Environmental Evaluation unit together with Masifundise Development Trust.
Background:
The Marine Living Resources Act, 18 of 1998 (MLRA), excluded small-scale and artisanal fishers who catch and sell fish to sustain livelihoods. Furthermore, it also excluded those involved in post harvesting and other activities like bait preparation, cleaning, processing and marketing. In 2002, with support from Masifundise Development Trust (MDT) small-scale fishers from South Africa gathered at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) to discuss their grievances and rights with other fishers from all over the world. This triggered a civil society process to address the rights of small-scale fishers in South Africa. In 2005, the government adopted long-term fishing policies that made no provision for small-scale fishers. Later that year, with support from the Legal Resources Centre, the matter was taken to the Equality Court which ordered that a new policy be developed to secure rights for small-scale fishers.
In 2007, the Department of Environment Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) convened a National Summit on small-scale fisheries. The Summit elected and mandated a National Task Team with representatives from fishing communities to oversee the process of developing small-scale policy for the marginalized and excluded fishers in South Africa. A Technical Task Team was also appointed to discuss and debate the technical details of managing this newly created sector. After several years of deliberation a draft policy was eventually published for comment in 2011. In June 2012, the Small-scale fisheries policy was finally adopted by Cabinet. This was seen as a victory for small-scale fishers in South Africa. The new small-scale fisheries policy moves away from an individual rights allocation process, with a largely commercial focus to one which is collective and has a developmental focus. More importantly, the policy gives legal recognition to small-scale fishers. Other benefits of the new policy include:
1. The setting aside of preferential fishing zones for small-scale fishers, where they will be able to harvest or catch multiple species throughout the year. These zones will be out of bounds for big commercial fishing.
2. Involvement of fishers in sustainable marine resource co-management.
3. Clear benefits for women, in fishing communities, from both fishing and participation in the value chain.
4. Greater access to markets and infrastructural support for the sector.
The policy has been designed to improve the livelihoods of fishers and fishing communities. However, there are various challenges associated with its implementation most notably what resources and what quantum of fish will be made available to this sector.

Fishermen is a short documentary film about the fishing activity in Cape town, South Africa. The documentary is a comparison between the local fishing not damaging the sea but can't feed the mass and the commercial fishing feeding the mass but plombering the sea.
