Tlachtga - Halloween returns to where it began, a hill top in Meath, Ireland
As a damp cold darkness closed in on Halloween 2018 hundreds of people ascended a hilltop in Co Meath . Once bonfires blazed out every such Samhain as fires across Ireland were extinguished only to be lit from the fire kindled that night on this very hill top. Hundreds of years have passed since the ceremony was suppressed but now on this night the old gods return and the Samhain fire is lit once more.
People have gathered on what remains of the last of many structures that occupied the hilltop, 2000 year old concentric earthworks that enclosure a much older barrow burial where the ritually interred skeleton of a baby was excavated, along with much evidence of the ancient fires that once burned regularly on this hilltop.
The fire lit here was visible at the royal enclosure on Tara and marked the beginning of the Celtic year. The fires were also visible from the ancient cairns and their astronomical stones at Loughcrew to the west.
Tlachtga Samhain Fire Festival 2015
The Place Where Halloween Began. Description of the event from their web site:
The Celtic ceremony at Tlachtga has been revived, mixing the ancient past and the twenty-first century with a re-enactment of the Celtic celebration starting with a torch lit procession from the Fair Green in Athboy, Co. Meath to the top of the Hill of Tlachtga, at 7:30pm on October 31st.
Samhain, the ancient Celtic Festival that we now call Halloween, originated at Tlachtga (Hill of Ward) in Co. Meath more than 2,000 years ago. Samhain marks the end of the old Celtic Year and the beginning of the New Year. The Celts believed that this was a time of transition, when the veil between our world and the next came down, and the spirits of all who had died since the last Oíche Shamhna (Night of Samhain) moved on to the next life.

Samhain Fire Festival 2019: Hill of Ward (Tlachtga)
Master of Ceremonies Gemma McGowen joined by members of the pagan community from across Ireland performed a re-creation of the ancient pre-christian Samhain Fire Festival. The Hill of Ward (Tlachtga) was a major ceremonial enclosure and one of the earliest sites to host Samhain, the place from which the light of the new year first emanates.
This contemporary ritual, evoking Celtic Pagan beliefs, was gifted to the gathered people with a beautiful and deeply meaningful ceremony that truthfully echoed the epic stories of the past… included meaningful present contexts… and offered powerful aspirational hope for the future of Ireland and indeed for all of planet earth.
